Asambhav - ‘Asambhav’ promises chilling action
[Tuesday, June 29, 2004]

“Asambhav”, which will be released in July, promises to be an espionage film full of action.

It is Arjun Rampal’s first action film. It will showcase the actor and Priyanka Chopra together for the first time. And it is an espionage story that takes birth in Locarno in Switzerland.

The story is about a high-ranking Indian diplomat, played by Mohan Agashe, being kidnapped along with his daughter Kinjal (Dipanita Sharma) while holidaying in Switzerland.

The abduction is the work of a master criminal Ansari (Milind Gunaji). Planning a conspiracy of international dimensions, Ansari hires the Mabros Mercenaries (Shawar Ali and gang) to kidnap the diplomat and his daughter. The hostages are kept at the Brissago Islands.

What Ansari has in mind is to exchange the diplomat for Yuzan (Mukesh Rishi), the head of an international terrorist group.

The army then decides to send Captain Aadit Arya (Arjun) on an undercover mission (code named Asambhav) to Switzerland to investigate the situation and to bring the diplomat back safely.

This is apparently the first Bollywood film to be shot in Locarno and, that too, for 65 days consecutively. With the entire film being digitalized and seven cameras rolling simultaneously, no duplicates have been used while recording.

Though Rajiv Rai denies being inspired by the Hollywood hit “Mission Impossible”, he claims the movie is very much made in the same style as top action films in the West.

Also, for the first time audiences will get to see Priyanka in an action and not in a romantic role. Arjun too is set to rock people as an action hero.

Deewaar - Bachchan’s second ‘Deewaar’ comes up this week
[Wednesday, June 23, 2004]
This week, Amitabh Bachchan is about to star in a film titled “Deewar” for the second time in his life and its producer is hoping it will again make Bollywood history.Producer Gaurang Doshi, who teamed up two years ago with the mighty Bachchan for “Aankhen”, goes for a massive adventure story with the actor in “Deewar: Let’s Bring Our Heroes Home”.

Doshi admits the film is far bigger and more epic in proportion. “It’s a natural progression. One tends to go from one level to a larger level, and that’s what I’ve done with my second film.”

“Deewaar” breaks conventional definitions of entertainment. Writer Sridhar Raghavan who earlier did the other masculine piece “Khakee” is treading on untried territory here.

“Deewaar” zeroes in on a congregation of Indian prisoners of war held captive in Pakistan for many decades who are determined to break lose.

Says Doshi, “‘Deewaar’ is a prisoner-of-war escape adventure drama, like Richard Attenborough’s ‘The Great Escape’. But it isn’t a copy of the film or any other Hollywood film.

“My writer Sridhar and director Milan Luthria took up a very poignant theme - there are prisoners of war in Pakistan who haven’t seen their family, some of them don’t know what their children look like - and turned it into an adventure drama unlike any other seen before.”

The thrill-a-minute plot has been designed as a political parable. Says Doshi, “While on one hand it addresses itself to a serious political problem - that of prisoners of war - on the other hand, ‘Deewaar’ is a straightforward action-adventure story.”

While Bachchan stars as a prisoner of war, Sanjay Dutt is cast as a mercenary who helps the prisoners of war make their breathtaking escape.

Sanjay scored bull’s eye with “Munnabhai M.B.B.S.” last year but failed miserably with “Plan” and “Rudraksh” this year.

“Since Bachchan is exceptionally fond of Sanjay Dutt in real life, they make great co-stars together. Their scenes together are among the highlights of ‘Deewaar’.”

Akshaye Khanna plays Bachchan’s son. His last film “Hungama” was a successful comedy. If all had gone well, Akshaye would have been seen with Bachchan in this year’s cops thriller “Khakee”. But he dropped out at the eleventh hour.

The enormously talented K.K. Menon of “Chhal” fame plays a pivotal role. In fact “Deewaar” is another all-male macho film like several other notable movies this year such as “Khakee” and “Aan”.

The only female presence is Amrita Rao, considered a lucky mascot after three hits, “Ishq Vishq”, “Masti” and “Main Hoon Na”, in less than two years of her career. Amrita plays a Pakistani girl in “Deewaar”.

Would the sweaty, rugged, muddy ambience of “Deewaar” put family audiences off? “Not the least,” asserts Doshi. “Because at heart ‘Deewaar’ is a very emotional father-son story.”

The film is important for Amitabh Bachchan. After the walk-on part in “Lakshya” last week, “Deewaar” again puts him at the forefront.

A film called “Deewaar” 30 years ago had changed the course of the Bachchan’s career. Would the new-millennium “Deewaar” do the same?

“I sure hope so. Bachchan is beyond outstanding in ‘Deewaar’. I’ve decided I’ll never make a film without him,” vows Doshi.

“Deewaar” is being pitched against the huge historical Hollywood Warner Brothers epic “Troy” this week. But Doshi isn’t daunted.

“If ‘Troy’ had Brad Pitt, my film has Bachchan, Sanjay and Akshaye Khanna. And if ‘Troy’ recreates history, ‘Deewaar’ is going to create history.” Touché?

Kisna - Achieving global excellence in Indian setting
[Monday, June 21, 2004]
Vivek Oberoi plays the title role of “Kisna” with two new heroines - Isha Sharvani, a renowned dancer from Kerala, and Antonia Bernath from London - along with famous British actors Michael Maloney, Caroline Lingruish and veteran actress Polly Adams.A talented team of Indian actors supporting them includes Hrishita Bhatt, Amrish Puri, Om Puri, Yash Pal Sharma, Shivaji Sattam, Zarina Wahab and Rajat Kapoor.

This musical love story, set in the backdrop of the adventurous 1940s in India, has two veteran music composers, A.R. Rahman and Ismail Darbar, and lyrics by Javed Akhtar. The combination is expected to produce a music fiesta that will surpass all past Subhash Ghai films.

“It’s purely an Indian film with Indian music, Indian values and Indian emotions with an Indian backdrop for a wider range of audience from masses to classes,” says Subhash Ghai.

“This is my effort to reach out to everybody in the cinema hall and provide entertainment with a great story,” he adds. “This would be the best script so far in my career.”

Shot on sync sound under the direction of Dilip Subramaniam at Ranikhet, the project has impressed its international actors with the standard of content and technique Indian filmmakers are achieving.

“Kisna” will also go to the international market with its two-hour English version while the Hindi version will be a regular three-hour feature film with songs and dances.

A.R. Rahman has recorded a special English number for “Kisna” for the international market, which will be released in the international music market.

Shot on a budget of Rs.250 million ($5.48 million), “Kisna” is being photographed by national award winning cinematographer Ashok Mehta with another national award winner Samir Chanda as production designer and art director.

Tinu Verma is the action director, while Saroj Khan does the choreography for this epic love story expected to be release by the end of this year.

Bernath, who is of British origin, was studying drama at Bristol’s Old Vic Theatre School (founded by legendary actor Sir Laurence Olivier in 1946). She opted out of the drama school when her agent asked her to audition for Ghai. She has done small roles on TV like “Holby City” and “The Afternoon Play”.

Phir Milenge - Salman plays AIDS patient

Cast: Salman Khan, Shilpa Shetty, Abhishek Bachchan
Direction: Revathy
Production: Sahara and Percept Picture Company
Music: Shankaar-Ehsaan-Loy, Bhavatha Raja

Phir Milenge - Salman plays AIDS patient
[Thursday, June 17, 2004]

It’s the story of Rohit Manchanda (Salman Khan), Tamanna Sahani (Shilpa Shetty) and Tarun Anand (Abhishek Bachchan).

A musician by profession, Rohit is extremely popular with his students. But at his heart, he is a loner and works in complete solitude.

Tamanna is a go-getter. A self-made woman, she enthuses vivacity wherever she goes, be it her ad agency or her home. Having lost her parents at a tender age she has been the father and mother to her younger sister, Tanya, a radio jockey.

Tarun is an upcoming lawyer, a charmer and a scrupulous gentleman, who never shies away from rectifying his shortcomings. That sometimes makes him a highly volatile person and at the same time a winner, who’s always striving for more.

Riding high on success, Tamanna happens to meet Rohit at their school reunion. The mere sight of him makes her nostalgic about her school days when she used to swoon over him. The two decide to catch up on life and love blooms in no time.

Then comes the twist in the fairy tale. Tamanna is embroiled in a difficult situation with no one to help her, not even Rohit. All her efforts to get in touch with him prove fruitless and she even loses her job in the process.

That’s when Tarun comes into her life and assures her of a fight against injustice. What will happen to Tamanna? Will she be able to forgive Rohit? Will her life ever get back on course?

This is the first time Shilpa Shetty adorns a makeup-less look. Also, don’t forget to take those tissue papers along with you while you watch this film.

It might hurt his fans to see Salman’s character suffering from AIDS.

This will be the first mainstream Hindi film to tackle the sensitive issue of AIDS. Mahesh Manjrekar’s “Nidaan” and Rituparno Ghosh’s “Ashukh” have dealt with the subject but they failed to make an impact since the films were not promoted well at the national level.

Film insiders say the character of an AIDS patient had no takers when Revathi first came up with the idea. Salman stepped in for old times’ sake, having acted in the Hindi film “Love” with her more than a decade ago.

Revathi herself admits it was difficult to find an actor for Salman’s role, with several turning it down, mostly because of the social stigma attached to the disease.

The film, made at a cost of Rs.40 million, will hit the theatres across the country June 25.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy has composed the music for the film and Prasoon Joshi has penned the lyrics.

Raincoat - Ajay and Ash teamed up again for the fourth time
[Thursday, June 17, 2004]

Rituparno Ghosh of ‘Chokher Bali’ fame came up with his first Hindi movie ‘Raincoat’ starring Ajay Devgan and Aishwarya Rai.

Rituparno Ghosh belongs to that modern generation of Bengali intellectuals, who loves to create meaningful cinema. He is the director of many National and international award winning Bengali films. But this is for the first time, he made a film for National people. So there is a big curiosity and great enthusiasm among the cine-goers for his first Hindi movie. Already the film has started to generate craze at the foreign shore. Just on the basis of a rough cut, the film has been selected for the competition section of the 39th Annual Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (June 25- July 12) in the Czech Republic. And that is the only film festival ‘Raincoat’ will visit, before it is released worldwide in August.

Story: ‘Raincoat’, which deals with the relationship between two Bihari characters Manoj (Ajay) and Niru (Aishwarya), is set against the backdrop of a rainy afternoon. The story begins with Manoj leaving his mother to travel to Kolkata in search of job. The city holds a different platform of hope and opportunity for him. A hope to rejuvenate him, to lift him out of his financial crunch and an opportunity to meet his beloved (Niru), who is no longer his. On a rainy day in Kolkata, equipped with his friend’s old raincoat, Manoj sets out to visit his old love. Six years later two estranged lovers meet to play the game of words.

Told in flashbacks and smooth transitions between past and present, ‘Raincoat’ is a story of the love between two people that endures despite circumstances, despite separation and hopelessness. Narrated against the backdrop of a rainy afternoon, the raincoat literally becomes instrumental in bringing out the love, Niru and Manoj have nurtured within their hearts for each other since childhood.

Performance: Aishwarya Rai has gone in for the no-make-up look in this film. Actress Mouli Ganguly has been signed opposite Sameer Sharmadhikar in this film. Sameer has a special appearance in the film. Whereas Ajay Devgan is concerned, he entered into a profit-sharing deal with the producers to keep the production costs down. Director Rituparno Ghosh has written the whole script in Bengali. Since he is no adept in Hindi, then eminent play-writer Usha Ganguly has converted it into Hindi.

Overall: Ajay Devgan and Aishwarya Rai have been teamed up again for the fourth time in this film. Earlier they were paired together in ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, ‘Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin’ and ‘Khakee’. People are eagerly waiting for the release of the film.
