Dhoom - ‘Dhoom’ reinvents cops and robbers flick
[Tuesday, July 27, 2004]
Yashraj Films is back in form with yet another exciting film after the hit flick “Hum Tum”. This time it is treating audiences to “Dhoom”, a fast paced, in-your-face youthful film. The film is directed by Sanjay Gadhvi who had earlier directed “Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai” for the same banner. “Dhoom” starts with a bang, and continues with a lot more right till the end.

The tale begins in Mumbai where a sophisticated gang of robbers is sweeping through the city, giving nightmares to the police department. Their modus operandi is modelled on a twister. They come like the wind, sweep the place and disappear even before the word ‘thief’ can be uttered.

The high point of these thefts is always the getaway of the robbers on their hi-tech bikes - the slickest, meanest and the fastest riding machines on the road.

Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan), an honest police officer, is brought in to crack the case. Soon he is on the trail of the robbers - a gang headed by Kabir (John Abraham) - an evil perfectionist with an attitude.

Kabir and his gang transform into inconspicuous pizza delivery boys after their unholy missions are accomplished. So brilliant is their metamorphosis that no one suspects them of being the same wicked robbers who don helmets and commit daring robberies in blissful anonymity.

Initially daunted by the speed and mannerisms of the gang, Jai ropes in the services of Ali (Uday Chopra), a happy-go-lucky garage mechanic and a prodigious bike rider.

Ali is very different from Jai - while the latter is serious, Ali is flippant and casual. The two don’t get along and Jai hates him at first, but soon realizes that he can ride bikes like the wind and can help bring the robbers to justice.

Ali, the reluctant recruit, and Jai set up an ambush. But Kabir soon catches up on the Jai-Ali team. And so starts the hunt, where sometimes the hunter becomes the hunted. Jai and Ali find their various attempts thwarted, as the gang keeps slipping from their grasp.

“Dhoom” reinvents the classic cops and robbers tale and brings it into the 21st century. With fast bikes, big action, non-stop fun and a thrilling story that leaves you out of breath, “Dhoom” is a powerhouse of adventure and excitement waiting to explode.

Besides the look and the styling of actors by designer Anaita Shroff, the film is packed with some racy music by Pritam. The background score is given by Salim-Sulaiman who also gave the score for horror flick “Bhoot”.

Also, check out those amazing sporty bikes in the film.

Kyun Ho Gaya Na - Romantic comedy with good music
[Tuesday, July 06, 2004]

“Kyun! Ho Gaya Na” is a love story revolving around how its two main protagonists Diya Malhotra (Aishwarya Rai) and Arjun Khanna (Vivek Oberoi) meet. Divya has had a rough childhood and has been brought up by a close family friend.

She meets a friend of the Malhotras, Raj Chauhan (Amitabh Bachchan), when she goes to Mumbai where she ends up staying in Arjun’s home with his parents — who are friends of both Raj and the Malhotras.

Standing at the opposite end of the spectrum on many things but closely identifying with their amore for each other, these main protagonists will end up asking, “Kyun, Ho Gaya Na Pyar”.

Vivek plays the lovable happy-go-lucky guy next door, 21st century in everything except on the issue of arranged marriage. Like his forefathers, he wants one. Aishwarya likes Vivek but doesn’t agree with his old-fashioned views on love.

It’s a romantic comedy with great music.

For the film, Aishwarya had to get her hair curled, which took about two hours. “I had to endure it and my hairdressers worked hard as a wig looks like a wig and we did not want that,” she said.

“At times it is not possible, like I settled for a hairpiece for Binodini in ‘Choker Bali’ as she needed long till the knee. Right from my first movie I have never used any wig and even tried to avoid a hairpiece,” she said.

Amavas - ‘Amavas’, an offbeat horror film shot in Delhi

Cast: Victor Banerjee, Mahesh Manjerekar, Neena Gupta, Konkana Sen Sharma and Tara Sharma
Direction: Siddharth Srinivasan

Amavas - ‘Amavas’, an offbeat horror film shot in Delhi
[Saturday, July 03, 2004]

The bustling life of national capital New Delhi has attracted many filmmakers. Now a bungalow there forms the backdrop of an offbeat horror film.

Made under the banner of Shreya Creations, the film’s executive producer is Sheel Kumar.

For director Siddharth Srinivasan, 28, this is his first commercial feature film. He has some short documentaries to his credit.

Srinivasan says it is “the story of two young girls who are medical students studying in Delhi, and stay in a barsati (rooftop tenement) as paying guests.

“The bungalow is owned by a childless couple, who treat the girls as their own. But something takes place one dreadful night in the lives of the girls that turns their lives upside down.”

As to why he decided to call the film “Amavas”, Srinivasan said: “‘Amavas’ is a dark and total black out night when a lot of action could take place. I decided to title it ‘Amavas’ only because of its complete dark effect.

“Since the entire film tells the story of a single night, I thought the title would be most apt.”

Veteran actor Victor Banerjee is visibly excited about his role as the landlord of a house who grows fond of his paying guests and takes care of their day-to-day needs “just the way a father would”.

TV actress Neena Gupta says she feels “great to be facing the camera again”. She plays the wife who too can’t do without the girls.

As for her long sabbatical from the small and big screen, she said: “After all, I am an actress first and it was only after I took to directing TV serials that I stopped acting for a while.

“But when a good role came my way, like the one I am doing in ‘Amavas’, I just grabbed it,” said the director of popular serials “Saans” and “Siski”.

Actress Tara Sharma, who acted in Mahesh Bhatt’s film on supernatural forces, “Saaya”, said “Amavas” “is very different from ‘Saaya’. This is more scary,” she said.

For Konkana Sen Sharma, who won last year’s National Award for Best Actress, “the film has been a new experience, though I must admit it has been a pleasant one”.

Viewers will get to see producer director Mahesh Manjrekar in a new role. “I play the role of a plumber and mine is a very important character in the story,” he said.

Shreya Creations had earlier produced “Paap” and “Jism”, “but this is going to be our first horror film”, said executive producer Sheel Kumar.
