Musafir
[Tuesday, November 09, 2004]

AK had had enough of change. From orphanages to juvenile delinquent homes; from odd jobs to petty crimes; from home addresses to jail addresses. He wanted his innocence back. A plot of land in Bangalore; A family; a dog; A new beginning…

One last big con-job, girlfriend in tow, sunset in background, and he would be well on his way. If this was a boilerplate Hindi film. Not. Twenty-four hours later, he’s been betrayed by his girlfriend, hunted by a drug lord, orphaned by the death of his three partners, and sent to Goa to do a drug deal to buy his life back.

As “Musafir” jack-knifes into the hedonism of Goa’s raves, flea markets, hippies and wanderlust, AK pulls off a drug deal with the deadly Israelis, chases a femme fatale with a ubiquitous past, manages to lose the drug lord’s money yet again, is hounded by a corrupt cop with a secret agenda, gets offered the same amount by a perverted husband who wants his wife dead, and is constantly challenged by a Punjabi-stud who can’t keep his girlfriend’s flirtatious innuendos at bay!

Under siege and racing the clock, a deadly battle of wits ensues in a climax filled with spiraling tension and volatile action. “Musafir” essentially moves at two speeds. Fast and faster.

For the first time in India, Director Sanjay Gupta explores the genre of Film Noir in its purest form. In plain English, that means “Musafir” delves into the dark side of human nature. Its protagonist is pushed to the edge of his morality and then some. He meets desperate characters, skinned to the bone by their vulgar wants. No justifications. Only gratification.

The tone of the film is duel edged. At its core, “Musafir” juxtapositions AK’s external spiral down the vortex of crime with the riveting inward journey of his conscience which relentlessly badgers his soul with the question: Sex. Murder. Betrayal. Everything that makes life worth living!

Interesting facts of this film:

Sanjay Dutt and Anil Kapoor on screen together for the first time after being in the industry for 23 yrs.

Sanjay Gupta, Sanjay Dutt and Aditya Panscholi team together after 10 yrs. They came together for AATISH in 1994 which was a success.

Koena Mitra earned her debut in this film. She just had one song in the film, but Sanjay Gupta was so impressed by her work and dedication that he gave her a well-etched role in the film as Anil Kapoor’s love interest.

A promotional music video has been shot for the song TEZ DHAAR that has been sung by Sanjay Dutt. The entire video has been shot inside a limousine with 4 Swedish models. The lyrics of the song are actual lines that Sanjay Dutt speaks in the film.

Distinct looks for all the characters….Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Mahesh Manjerekar, Aditya Panscholi

Hulchul
[Saturday, November 06, 2004]

A story of two estranged families, Hulchul has the premier family of a small town, headed by fiery Angaarchand, an influential landlord, pitted against the family headed by Lakshmidevi, a rich landlady of the neighboring village.

Angaarchand and his family of four sons (Jackie Shroff, Paresh Rawal, Arbaaz Khan and Akshaye Khanna) have taken a vow to stay away from women owing to past family tragedy (apparently caused by womankind), and the mere mention of the opposite sex is strictly forbidden.

At the same time, Lakshmidevi is waiting for an opportunity to seek revenge on Angaarchand and his family. As luck would have it, Angaarchand’s youngest son, Jai, and Lakshmidevi’s granddaughter, Anjali fall in love.Or do they? In the greatest con of romantic cinema to-date, what follows is a comedy of errors with deceit of a rather naughty kind between the leads with their families in tow trying to be one up on the other.

Rok Sako To Rok Lo
[Saturday, November 06, 2004]

Ah! Happy years! Once more who would not be young!

Rok Sako To Rok Lo is a celluloid extravaganza that celebrates the Technicolor imagination of the Youth as much as it evokes nostalgia of being young.

Dev, Ganguly, Bhajji, Venky and sweet Suhana are final year students at the modest Bharti School. The five friends are tied together in a timeless bond of friendship. As they bask in the freshness of youth and the spirit of innocent adventure, they have also to find their way through a maze of trials and tribulations imposed on them by the establishment. They however live in a carefree illusory world where lofty ambitions and preparations for a secure tomorrow have little meaning.

Though driven by an invincible life spirit - Rok Sako To Rok Lo, Dev and his friends are no match against Ranveer, the undisputed champion from the elitist Valley High School. Ranveer lives large. He has all the luxuries most young ones his age aspire for. He also has Sanjana, the gorgeous buzz of the Valley and the Bharti boys alike. Intimidated by the high-handed winning streak of Ranveer, Dev and his friends falter and fail.

Enters Kabir into their life. Kabir, whom they refer to as Phantom, is a mysterious and seemingly unapproachable Harley Davidson biker who inspires awe in all. In an unexpected turn of events, Phantom rides into Suhana’s life and eventually befriends her gang. A loner himself, Kabir is drawn towards them by the magic of their innocent and unconditional friendship. With his unconventional wisdom, Kabir provokes Dev and his friends to stand up and face the challenges thrown against them. Dev’s faith in friendship and his friends are reinforced. He discovers his first love, his true love.

The film climaxes into a grand operatic crescendo as Dev, Suhana and friends for the first time ever live their life spirit - Rok Sako To Rok Lo, in its truest form.

Rok Sako To Rok Lo is a rich canvas of color, emotions and true to life characters, with a very earthy feel. It is well blended with fresh and youthful melodies making it a wholesome experience.

Naach

Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Antara Mali, Riteish Deshmukh
Direction: Ram Gopal Varma

Naach
[Friday, November 05, 2004]

Naach is a love triangle. And the three players are Abhi, Rewa…and their values. Expect the unexpected, a film that’s more real than life. Undaunted by the fiasco she faced in Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon, Antra is hell-bent on proving that she can be more ‘oomph-oozing’ than Urmila was in her re-launch flick Rangeela.

But the film is not just all about dance and music as the title suggests. And Naach is not at all Rangeela. If Rangeela was light as feather, Naach is a tough as nails. If the characters of Rangeela wee the sort every viewer could identify with, the characters of Naach are larger and more intimidating than life.

Abhi and Rewa are emblems of our inner wishes and insecurities, of the dreams and anxieties which we keep secreted within us.

Naach is about Abhi (Abhishek Bachchan) who is a wannabe film actor, he does not care for anything, to make it big in the showbiz jungle. Rewa on the other hand is a strong minded choreographer but she too is struggling so that is the common connection between both of them. Rewa combats the odds to alter the system even while sticking to her convictions and principles.

The movies releases on 12th November.
