Koi Mere Dil Mein Hai - entertainer all the way
[Tuesday, April 19, 2005]

“Koi Mere Dil Mein Hai” is an entertainer with dollops of comedy and a bold and daring Dia Mirza sizzling up the screen.

Director Deepak Ramsay wanted to cast Celina Jaitley in “Koi Mere Dil Mein Hai” but could not get dates because of her commitment to Feroz Khan’s “Janasheen”.

Deepak then approached Dia Mirza but was not sure if she would agree to the daring scenes. Dia, however, consented saying that if the character and situation demanded it then there was no harm.

And so, Dia plays a rich, modern girl who makes heads turn. She nurses the belief that she can get any man she wants. One man refuses to be bowled over by her and she starts chasing him. In the process, she realizes what is true love and turns over a new leaf.

The film revolves around four characters - Raj, Simran, Sameer and Asha.

Raj (Priyanshu) is the spoilt son of Mumbai-based millionaire, Vikarm Malhotra (Kadar Khan). Afraid that her son may be falling into bad company Raj’s mother (Reema lagoo) gets him engaged to Simran (Diya Mirza).

Simran is the daughter of a rich non-resident Indian (Sadashiv Amrapurkar) and studies in Dubai. Simran is lively and naughty by nature and believes in enjoying life and having fun.

Simran meets Sameer (Rakesh Bapat), a young singer from Mumbai who comes to perform in Dubai along with his troupe. Simran is smitten by Sameer’s charm and innocence and falls in love with him.

Raj, on the other hand, meets Asha (Neha) who gives tuitions to his sister. Raj is totally mesmerized by Asha’s simplicity and innocence and feels she is the right girl for him.

The story of the four main characters evolves to an interesting climax when the parents get involved.

Co-produced by Maheshkumar and Arjandas, “Koi Mere Dil Mein Hai” is slated for release May 13.

Matrubhoomi
[Wednesday, April 06, 2005]

According to a recent report by UNESCO, there are around 50 million women missing from the population of India due to gender discrimination. The film “Matrubhoomi - A nation without women” explores the impact of absence of women on men. The instability, which can creep into a society due to the absence of women - be it physical, emotional and psychological - is the main theme of the film. It underlines how the absence of women inexorably leads to the debasement of men, draining them all that make them human.

The film explores a futuristic rural India wherein due to rampant female infanticide, women are practically extinct. The impact of the absence of women on men sees them finding alternative sources of release - pornography, homosexuality, bestial violence. When a girl is actually spied, she is promptly sold and married to 5 brothers. All five and the father-in-law exercise their conjugal rights in turn.

She starts coming closer to the youngest brother, the only one who treats her as a human being much to the chagrin of the father and other brothers. The eldest brother has the youngest one killed. She turns to her father for refuge but the father blinded with money too lets her down. After her attempt to escape with the low caste family servant boy unwittingly triggers off a caste war.

She is clapped in iron chains in a cowshed and raped repeatedly by her family and the low castes as well. When she finally becomes pregnant, everyone claims paternity. In the throes of the divesting caste war that ensures over her she gives birth to a girl.

Distributed by Sridevi and Boney Kapoor, Matrubhoomi is directed by Manish Jha and has already made rounds of several international film festivals. Salim Sulaiman has composed the background score of the movie.
