Kalyug - Beware, as you are being watched!
[Sunday, October 30, 2005]

Indian cinema is venturing into unexplored territories at an alarming speed. The year started off on a brilliant note with exposure of rich and the famous in ‘Page 3′. Now it’s the turn of a common man’s life to be captured on camera [though candidly] in ‘Kalyug’.

Because ‘One man’s tragedy is another man’s entertainment’!

Welcome to the world of Bhatts who continue to mix sex and thrills together ever so successfully year after year. While their ‘Zeher’ directed by Mohit Suri minted a lot of money, the same producer-director ‘jodi’ hopes to finish off the year on a winning note as well with ‘Kalyug’. Pretty likely because the movie also stars Bhatt’s blue eyed boy Emraan Hashmi!

The movie launches Kunal Khemu, a regular with the Bhatts in their earlier movies, where he appeared as a child artist. Remember ‘Hum Hain Raahi Pyaar Ke’ and ‘Zakhm’? He had also starred in movies outside Bhatts productions like Raja Hindustani and Bhai to name a few. Now the boy has grown up to be a handsome hunk and stars opposite director’s sister Smiley Suri. The movie also marks the debut of Deepal Shaw, a known name now after a couple of sizzling music videos.

‘Kalyug’ narrates the tale of a modern day world when your world is not just your own. When there is a third eye somewhere, which is monitoring you all the time. And when it’s all the time, it is literally ALL THE TIME! Even if that means your private moments in the confines of your own room.

Kunal Darr [Kunal Khemu] also became the victim of this hidden eye that sees him in act with his wife Renuka. Renuka, who is a simple girl with a sad past as an orphan and now looked forward to a rosy future with Kunal who promised her all the love and affection.

But did she know that her intimacy with her hubby would be out there in open for the world to see?

The third eye is none other than a hidden camera that tapes them on their first night. If this wasn’t enough, the two are also arrested them by police and charged with making pornographic films. Unable to cope up with all the humiliation and insult, Renuka’s world is shattered all over again. And she didn’t have any other choice but to commit suicide!

Now Kunal had only one mission in his life! To prove himself innocent and find the source behind the hidden cameras. Who operated this camera? Where did the tapes develop? Who were involved in this racket? Which market did these tapes eventually reach? Were there any more people like him who were trapped in this messy situation?

Who were the people who actually controlled the entire business?

And to his horror, he explores the fact that this nexus was much bigger than he could have ever imagined. Because it was not just India but a number of centers in the outside world that were functioning behind the scenes. And one of such places was Zurich!

Zurich, where an entire world of pornography opened up to the world. Whether it is legalized prostitution, strip shows, XXX clubs, drugs and everything else that is associated with sex, sleaze and drugs. Kunal has to fight the crime but he doesn’t know the identity of the criminal. He has to take the revenge for the death of his wife but he doesn’t know whom to take revenge from.

But he has one ray of hope. A famous Indian porn star Annie [Deepal Shaw] . He possesses just a photograph of the woman in question but he is clueless about one fact! Is she the enemy who has spoilt his life? Or is she herself a victim of this organized crime who would instead be providing him help to reach the epicenter of this crime!

His journey continues and he comes across a colorful character Alibhai [Emran Hashmi], who himself is a part of the porn business in Amsterdam. And his journey finally takes him to Amrita Singh [making a comeback in Hindi movies], who is the running this empire!

Shocked and surprised, Kunal now has a task in hand. But would he be able to give it a finish? Will Kunal’s experience bend the arms of the world of pornography? Will he ever get his dignity, pride and self respect back?

Will he be able to make Renuka’s soul rest in piece?

Earlier titled ‘Blue Film’, ‘Kalyug’ releases this winter!

Sarhad Paar - Return of cross border revenge
[Sunday, October 30, 2005]

There was a time till around 3-4 years back when cross border tension was the hottest topic amongst many film makers. This was the time period when ‘Sarhad Paar’, a movie starring Sanjay Dutt, Tabu and Mahima Chaudhary was conceptualized. Times changed with the relations improving with the neighbouring country while overdose of such movies also nullified the demand for this genre. In the meanwhile number of movies like Sarhad Paar were either halted, scrapped or delayed. ‘Sarhad Paar’ too suffered from the same fate and is now gearing up for release after a gap. A Nimbus Motion Pictures, Sarhad Paar is directed by Raman Kumar who hasn’t been having a great time at the box office with the disappointing show of his last two movies ‘Wah Wah Ramji’ and ‘Raja Bhaiya’.

‘Sarhad Paar’ is a movie about Ranjit Singh [Sanjay Dutt], a brave Sikh soldier from the state of Punjab who is happy with his loving wife Pammi [Tabu] and a doting sister Simran [Mahima Chaudhary]. Life was never meant for him to be same again as he crosses border to reach Pakistan. He goes through physical and mental trauma in the hands of terrorists that were lead by a mercenary called Bhaktavar [Rahul Dev], a mercenary who indulged in a profession of a different kind.

He recruited traitors from both sides of the border and made money with both hands!

Ranjit Singh turns vegetable before he gets a chance to return back to his family. He doesn’t remember much. His body deceives him to listen to his mind. His mind doesn’t allow to him to lead a normal life. And his life is nothing more than a walking corpse.

He receives ongoing treatment in the army hospital but his condition doesn’t improve inspite of all the love and affection from Pammi and Simran. Both the women in his life want him to get back to normalcy but his recovery is painfully slow. Shattered, Pammi starts loosing hope but not so for Simran who has known her brother since her childhood. She knows her brother would be back at his feet with a mind that would start functioning yet again with great speed.

It would have been tough for anyone to be in such a condition without a mental support and same held good even for Simran. This is why she was lucky to have Ravi [Chandrachur Singh] in her life. A folk singer by profession, Ravi was her Simran’s fiancée and her pillar of support.

But one never knew till how long would Ravi too be patient enough in waiting for her beloved to start living back a normal life!

Meanwhile as the saying goes, after a dark night comes a sunny day ! Same happened in the lives of Ranjit Singh, Simran and Pammi after Ranjit Singh managed to start solving the jigsaw puzzle of his tormented life. Now the mission in his life was to get back to Bhaktavar and make him pay the price for all the golden moments that he had lost in his life. And why just Bhaktavar, but an entire clan that had the people of the likes of Bhaktavar!

Because he is the Sardar who believes - ”When all other means have failed, it is then righteous to take the sword in the hand”!!

Also starring Avtaar Gill and Vishwajeet Pradhan in supporting roles, Sarhad Paar has music by Anand Raaj Anand and lyrics by Dev Kohli. The movie is expected to hit the screens later this year.

Mr Ya Miss - Cool dudes, BEWARE!
[Tuesday, October 25, 2005]

Are you one of those cool dudes who think of them as GOD’s gift to humankind? Do you think that you can always have the best of both worlds? Is your charm always going to bail you out from the difficult situations? Well, STOP being overconfident and beware! Because Sanjay Saxena too thought the same! And the results were there for everyone to be seen! Because when GODs come on their own then only they can save you from the worst!

Sanjay Saxena [Aftab Shivdasani] was a handsome, young and a charming 20 something advertising executive who believed he could get anything he wanted! And what he wanted was girls, girls and more girls all around him - be it of any shape or size. He was happy with his escapades and least cared about the warnings he got from his best friend [Riteish Deshmukh]. Though Riteish wanted him to take care of himself lest he gets caught in a messy situation, Sanjay was of a kind who paid little heed to his friend’s advice. Two timing or three timing, Sanjay kept himself busy with his worldly leisure and pleasures before the inevitable happened!

His misdeeds came out in the open and his life took a turn when he was hit on the head by one of his girlfriends. If only if he would have been dead then probably he would have been better off. But GODs had different plans for him! Because on reaching heaven when he pleaded before Shiv-Parvarti [Ajinkya Deo, Varsha Usgaonkar] to send him back to the earth, they agreed to his request but only with a condition…….

Now he would have to live on earth as a female!!!!!!!

Mr. now became a Miss overnight!

And Aftab became Antara Mali!

And life was never the same again!

Working in the same office in the same surroundings, Miss went through exactly the same situations which she initiated when she was a Mr. Men folk drooled all over her. Her short dresses caught the fancy of many a office goers. Her best friend Riteish, unknowingly of her true identity, fell in love with her and on one fine day Miss also finds him alongside her on the bed!!!

This could still have been handled but what about the outside world? Because even her boss [Bharat Dhabolkar] started feeling hots for her. All this while the man trapped in her body never allowed her to be on her own. Her body was that of a female but the brain still belonged to a male. This reflected in her everyday life, be it her sitting posture, her walking style or her restroom habits [she inadvertently visits male restrooms only to find it surrounded by men all around]. And if anyone tried to act smart with her then she had to resort to her manly punches and kicks to bail her out of this complex situation.

But would this continue with her throughout her life? Will she always remain as a complicated personality? Will she ever become a complete male or a female? Or would this turn out to be a bad dream in the end?

Will this Miss get back as a Mr. ?

The film boasts of a colorful look to it, which is of the kind that you have seen in flashy comedies like ‘Masti’, ‘Kya Kool Hain Hum’, ‘Maine Pyaar Kyon Kiya’ and ‘No Entry’ in the recent times. Going by the success rate of comedies this year and some genuinely feel-good factor that is apparent in the movie, MYM appears to be a sure shot success. A tie up between RGV and Sunil Chainani & Sameer Srivastava of debutante production house, Horseshoe Pictures Pvt. Ltd, MYM has Antara Mali writing the story and screenplay of the movie while sharing the director’s seat with another debutant Satchit Puranik.

Music for the movie has been composed by Nitin Raikwar, though the promo currently on air uses the ‘Road Rage’ piece composed by Sandesh Shandilya from the movie ‘Road’. Also starring Ajinkya Deo, Varsha Usgaonkar, Divya Dutta and Ishrat Ali, MYM is slated for a December 2nd release.

Home Delivery - Not just pizzas, but life!

Home Delivery - Not just pizzas, but life!
[Monday, October 17, 2005]

If Farhan Akhtar started the trend of cool hip youthful flicks set in urban surroundings with ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ then Sujoy Ghosh took it further with his innovatively directed film ‘Jhankaar Beats’ that gained popularity as the weeks progressed. While ‘Jhankar Beats’ has managed to get itself a cult status over the years, Sujoy’s next ‘Home Delivery’ promises to take Bollywood a step forward as far as fresh and innovative ideas are concerned. Picture this - how many movies in Bollywood [or for this matter even Hollywood] would have a film screenplay writer and a pizza delivery boy as the central protagonists of a movie?

That’s ‘Home Delivery’ for you!

Its Diwali time and there is huge demand of pizzas at ‘Mummy’s Pizza’. The pizza outlet is on lookout for pizza delivery boys and a boy does step on its door for a job! The boy is none other than 51 year old Michael Burnett [Boman Irani] who is a simple man with minimal desires and innocence of a child. His career chart hasn’t been too impressive till date as he has lost a job every 2 days so far! But this time around he has some plans of his own as he is determined to stick to the job for a longer duration. He is ready to work hard for it and do the preparation offline and also learn on the job!

Michael soon gets his assignment of home delivering pizza at the place of Sunny Chopra a.k.a. Gyan Guru [Vivek Oberoi], a multifaceted personality who writes for Times of Hindustan, is an expert in being an agony uncle and is soon going to be a hotshot in the world of Bollywood due to his first ever screenplay writing assignment with none other than Karan Johar. A pessimist when it comes to social life, he is a bit overconfident about him and believes in one’s own worth rather than destiny or luck. As per him, it is HE who has made a name for himself and if people are behaving with him nicely then well, it’s because of HIS achievements, and nothing else.

He has number of people in his life some of whom he adores, some whom he likes and some whom he absolutely dislikes. At the top of the list of people he simply adores is Maya [Mahima Choudhary], an actress out of her prime as far as Bollywood is concerned and now a big name in the South film industry. Though she had moved to the South, her heart still lied in Bollywood where she desperately seeked a comeback in a big banner movie. Circumstances bring her in contact with Sunny who himself had been her admirer since his teenage. While Sunny is happy to meet his childhood fantasy, Maya looks at him as an opportunity to be a part of the Karan Johar product.

A girl whom Sunny likes is his fiancée Jenny [Ayesha Takia] who is his complete opposite. She is an optimist who loves and lives life and is always happy to look at the brighter side of things. While Sunny is all excited about meeting Maya on the Diwali night, he just doesn’t remember that he has also been called by Jenny at her parents’ place for a dinner.

Some people whom Sunny absolutely detests are his neighbors Pandey [Saurabh Shukla] and Gungunani [Tikku Talsania]. While Pandey doesn’t leave a single stone unturned to discuss his innovative investment plans with him and use every belonging of his in a true-blue dearest’n'closest neighbor fashion, Gungunani is under an impression that he is the greatest singer alive. Greatest to an extent that he believes he is none other than Tansen! Little did he know that actually it was only he who thought so!

In between all this fun there is also a serial killer [Arif Zakaria] whose targets have one thing in common - they are all P3T i.e. Page 3 types. Termed as a P3P [Page 3 psycho], now he is on lookout for Maya!

Coming to the movie’s story, Michael drives to Sunny’s place to deliver pizza and is soon standing right at his door. But he just doesn’t deliver pizza there. A series of incidents that follow make him deliver some of the life’s simple lessons to him!

Yet another light hearted entertainer in an year of comedies ruling the Box Office, ‘Home Delivery’ that has a tagline ‘Aap Ko Ghar Tak’ also stars Karan Johar and Juhi Chawla in guest appearances along with Victor Banerjee, Viju Khote and Rushita Pandit. Releasing a week after Diwali, Home Delivery should soon find a place in one of the MUST WATCH urban flicks this November!

Humko Tum Se Pyaar Hai - When fate intervenes
[Thursday, October 13, 2005]

Association of Ali Morani, Karim Morani and Bunty Soorma go a couple of decades back when they joined hands for ‘Arjun’. Since then they have come up with number of films like Vardi, Yodha, Dushmani, Raja Hindustani and Dum. With an exception of Raja Hindustani, rest all have been action movies with majority of them starring Sunny Deol. Now its the turn of Bobby Deol to work for the production house for their second romantic movie ‘Humko Tumse Pyaar Hai’ that was launched a few years back but was stuck in the midst due to director Bunty Soorma’s untimely demise. With Vikram Bhatt agreeing to handle the reins to shoot the remaining portions of the movie, HTPH is now ready to release this November.

Fate has a strange way of getting your past and present together. Sometimes this comes as a pleasant surprise and sometimes…..it brings in a dilemma. This is what happens in the lives of Durga, Rohit and Raj who find themselves facing each other on a stage they would have never imagined. Because the central character of the movie has to choose from a past, that she never knew, and a present that she has just known. While each of her two lovers proclaim their love for her by saying ‘Humko Tumse Pyaar Hai’, she has said the same as well to both of them, either knowingly or unknowingly!

Whom does she finally tell ‘humko Tumse Pyaar Hai’?

Durga is a doll face beauty who lives somewhere in the remote interiors of Rajasthan. She has everything a girl would want - a beautiful physical appearance, a doting mother [Suhasini Mulay] and a God’s gift that make her even more special. She is talented in making clay sculptures. But God has His own way to take something from you that would have otherwise made you a perfect living being.

Durga is BLIND.

Enters a dashing young man Rohit [Arjun Rampal] in her life who arrives in his village due to his job in a nearby chemical company. They both come across each other and while Durga falls for his honesty and charm, Rohit sees himself falling in love with her due to her skills as an artist and her inner and outer beauty.

As all love stories, even this isn’t without its share of thorns as enters Rana [Parmeet Sethi], a bad character in the village who has his eyes set on Durga. His attempts at raping Durga are thwarted by Rohit who arrives at the scene in the nick of time and while Rana runs away from the scene, he does do with a promise to create havoc in Rohit’s life.

Meanwhile Rohit and Durga decide to spend their rest of lives together but not before Durga has been treated for her handicap. He takes her to Dr. Prasad [Kanwaljeet] who treats her for the lost eyesight and in some time she gets her sight back. Before she could see the man she truly loved, Rohit is killed by Rana while on his way to arrange for their marriage.

Durga finds her eye sight back but loose her love in the bargain!

With no purpose to live any further, she decides to take her own life but this time Dr. Prasad comes to her rescue. To distance her from the memories of the past, he takes her to Switzerland and motivates her to start her life afresh. In this new chapter in her life arrives Raj [Bobby Deol], a handsome’n'charming person who falls in love with her in no time. Eager to win her heart he pursues Durga at any given moment but to no avail. Still not being able to come out of her past, it was unimaginable for Durga to welcome a new man in her life, until there is a revelation…..

Raj and Rohit were close friends before destiny snatched Rohit away from Raj!

Though Durga doesn’t realize that this is the same Rohit whom she loved once [as she had never seen him], she understands one common factor that tied the lives of Raj and hers - they both had lost the person whom they had been closest to. She starts understanding Raj better and eventually says yes to him for the marriage. Raj’s happiness is no bounds and the marriage preparations begin. This is where fate intervenes and brings with a pleasant surprise.

Rohit is ALIVE!

He joins Raj and on visiting his place finds Durga face to face. Will he reveal the truth to Raj and Durga? Will Durga ever get to know that this Rohit is THE Rohit who she believed was dead? On knowing so whom would she choose? Raj or Rohit? Will Raj sacrifice his love for his best friend?

Who will eventually get the ‘pyaar’ after saying ‘Humko Tumse Pyaar Hai’?
