Anjaan - A stranger knocks your door
[Monday, January 30, 2006]

There have been numerous stories about two men - one woman or two women - one men in love.
But do all such stories necessarily follow a linear path?
Can there be a multidimensional aspect to any of these stories?
Can stories be sometimes so complex that they are hardly incomprehensible?

‘Anjaan’ is the story of three such characters who get caught in the web of deceit, infidelity and loss of faith and trust. And it took just a day to make the three loose everything that they had ever had? Or was there something that they actually gained?

Aditya [Vipul Gupta] and Meneka [Mahek Chahal] were married to each other, though they couldn’t call their marriage a happy one. Major reason behind this unhappy marriage was Aditya’s professional setback. A film maker, his last two films were flops and it had become difficult for him to come out of the failure. Self immersed in his career and continuously trying to analyze his lack of success, he completely neglected Meneka.

Not that Meneka didn’t make any attempts to make the marriage work. Inspite of being a successful model, she had left it all to just be with her hubby. She tried to take Aditya out of his failure and lend a supporting hand but all went in vain. He was a loving, affectionate and caring man in the past but now he was obsessed only with one thing - his latest script on which he was working hard.

For Aditya this script was the road to regain his lost pride and standing in the industry!

On the other hand life had been boring, monotonous and completely inconsequential for Meneka!

Spark came in the form of a stranger Shoaib [Aamir Ali]. Coming out of nowhere, he soon was about to write a chapter in the lives of Aditya and Meneka. A charming personality, he managed to woo Meneka and started bringing out her inner desires, passion and ambitions.

Meneka, who believed in an unbreakable bond with her husband, soon saw herself getting completely swayed away by Shoaib’s mannerisms. Her marital life seemed to be endangered but the pleasure of being with Shoaib made her get immersed deeper and deeper into this new found relationship.

As expected at some point of time, Aditya got to know about this relationship. What happens next? Does this ‘anjaan’ person create havoc in their lives? Who is he? How did he enter the lives of Aditya and Meneka? Has he come with a definite purpose? Or is it just fate that has got them all together?

Directed by Hansal Mehta, ‘Anjaan’ is an Anil Bohra production with screenplay by Suparn Verma.

Teesri Aankh - The Hidden Camera - The battle with technology
[Wednesday, January 25, 2006]

Bollywood hit by scandals captured on camera. Politicians held red handed in a sting operation. MMS with stars in compromising position being freely circulated on mobiles. ‘Reality’ films about honeymooning couples available on internet and DVD libraries.

All headlines sound familiar, don’t they? Especially in last couple of years, newspapers, websites and news channels have been abuzz with such headlines making it on the front. ‘Teesri Aankh - The Hidden Camera’ tackles the same theme presented in a commercial format by director Harry Baweja. And the message it conveys is - Don’t take a headline as a story of someone else, because you yourself could be a story!

Sudama Pandey [Mukesh Rishi] is a notorious criminal who runs a global operation of capturing women on camera. He operates out of London and is assisted by his 2 partners in crime [Mukesh Tiwari and Murli Sharma]. Be it a honeymoon bedroom, changing rooms, girls hostels, none of these places miss the third eye. The eye of a camera! First they capture girls on films and then abuse them, both physically and mentally.

One such girl who gets trapped by them is Sapna [Neha Dhupia]. She is a lovely girl who had dreams in her eyes and wanted to make it big in her career. She was happy to have found love in her life through her fiancé.

But her life was to be short-lived. She is murdered by Sudama’s gang and a lovely personality came to an end. As luck would have it, the murder is witnessed by Ammu [Amisha Patel] who tries to rescue Sapna but her effort goes in vain.

Ammu is terrorized by the events around her. But this was not an end to her ordeal as now she is being chased by Sapna’s murderers. Meanwhile her sister Aarti [Aarti Chabaria] and her partner Ashish [Ashish Chaudhary] too are in lookout for her as she has gone missing.

Soon enters the scene Sapna’a fiancé Arjun Singh [Sunny Deol] who turns out to be none other than an A.C.P. in Mumbai. As a part of his assignment he had been on lookout for Sudama that leads him to London.

And in London he has only one clue that could take him to his destination - Ammu! Unfortunately the clue herself is gone missing. He makes all possible attempts to find her but reaches a dead end.

He can’t find Ammu…and he doesn’t have anyone else for help. He has to do everything all alone. The war is ON…and now the world would see the good win over evil. Because now Arjun just doesn’t have to fight criminals…he also has to fight technology.

Teesri Aankh - The Hidden Camera is now ready for release and is expected to arrive on February 17 this year.

Kafan (Forgotten Showers) - When hunger calls
[Monday, January 23, 2006]

There are certain movies that are made purely for the commercial purpose while there are others that are issue based flicks that create a platform for a voice to be raised. ‘Kafan’ a.k.a. ‘Forgotten Showers’ is one such film that takes you to rural India and gives an insight into the poverty, hunger & exploitation. Adapted from a short story by Munshi Premchand, “Bhuli Hui Baarish”, ‘Kafan’ stars Rajpal Yadav, Sadhu Meher [a favorite with Satyajit Ray] and Nethra Raghuraman.

Period - Post independence era Setting - A village somewhere in remote India

The two protagonists of this story are Ghisu [Sadhu Meher] and Madhav [Rajpal Yadav] who are extremely poor. Poor to such an extent that they have never had a proper meal for a long long time. In fact the last time they had their stomachs full was so many years back that they themselves can’t remember that time.

The reasons behind such a state of their were multiple. One, they inherently belonged to the weaker section of the society. Two, they were illiterate and hence had fewer working options. Three, the landlords in the village exploited them in addition to which they had huge debts from the moneylenders!

In such a miserable state of their, they had no other alternative than to do only one thing that could to satisfy their hunger - Steal! Was it good or bad, or morally right - no such questions came to their mind in such a condition.

Good luck knocked their doors when Madhav got married to Budhiya [Nethra Raghuraman], a beautiful woman who herself was from a village. She knew how to make things work for her family and soon their condition improved over the course of time. Everything appeared to be going fine for them as the happy family of three found some order in their life. It appeared that the family would continue to bloom with the news of Budhiya’s pregnancy.

But God perhaps had some different scheme set for them!

Their happiness was short-lived as Budhiya’s condition worsened in her advanced stage of pregnancy. Ghisu and Madhav tried their level best to save her during her labor pains but couldn’t arrange for any medical help due to lack of money.

Budhiya died and the father-son were crestfallen. In this period of depression and helplessness, they faced another problem. Now they needed resources for the cremation of their beloved Budhiya. Finally they were able to perform last rites by begging all over the village. They got enough money for this purpose but still there was some money left. What did they do with it?

They spent the remaining money in eating and also gave some food to a beggar so that he could seek the blessings of Budhiya who was responsible for his meals.

A hard hitting film, ‘Kafan’ has been realistically treated and is sure to melt even the strongest of hearts due to heart-wrenching performances. A Sushila Bhatia production directed by Vinod Kumar, ‘Kafan’ is being shown extensively in festival circuits and has already won Audience Choice Award at the Leicester Expo Film Festival 2005, UK.

Sun Zarra - Love whispers!
[Saturday, January 21, 2006]

What if someone you never knew, someone you never saw, someone you never met…is THE someone for YOU? What would you do when a situation comes and someone comes right behind you…and says…”Sun Zarra”?

Neither Rohit [Samir Aftab] nor Trisha [Anjana Sukhani] knew that they would get into such unusual circumstances. They came from different cities and different backgrounds. They had different personalities and likes/dislikes, but had one important thing in common - flare for music!

For Rohit, music was a passion. He always wanted to make it big as a singer since his childhood. And for achieving his dreams, he knew which was the place to be - Mumbai. Soon he packs his bags and arrives in the city of dreams where his destiny awaited him.

Little did he know that his destiny would take him not just to his passion but also make him realize true love!

Soon he found a place to live with Gauri Shankar [Mithun Chakravorty], a Bihari-babu with a heart of gold. Coming from the same place as Rohit, he sensed his struggle and offered to help him out in his endeavor at every feasible step.

Rohit found an elder brother and now had only one thing to worry about - find a foothold in the industry.

While Rohit continued his struggle and practiced singing, a girl next door happened to hear his voice on a regular basis. She was Trisha, a sweet young girl, who fell in love with the voice of a boy she had never seen in her life. Cupid struck and soon she was in love with not just the voice but the man himself.

Ironically whenever she came across him in person, her dislike for Rohit saw no bounds. Reason? She found him to be a prankster who was always up to some mischief or other in their locality. On the other hand Rohit found himself falling in love with her.

Trisha was in love with a voice…. Rohit was in love with a face…….

And soon the two found themselves at such a juncture in life when Rohit had to decide between his two loves - singing and Trisha.

What was the reason that compelled him to make such a choice? After all Trisha herself wanted him to be successful in his career.

Will Trisha allow Rohit to forget about his dream and ambitions? After all Rohit’s sole purpose for coming to Mumbai was to achieve that.

And does Gauri Shankar, inspite of all his maturity and level headiness, allow such a situation to take prevalence when Rohit, whom he considers as his younger brother, is looking for support at such a crossroad?

Directed by Rohit Nayyar, ‘Sun Zarra’ is a youth oriented production by Salim. A story of dreams, emotions and sacrifice, it is slated for February release.
