Being Cyrus - Have you checked in a stranger lately?
[Friday, February 24, 2006]

Have you checked in a stranger lately in your house? If so, then think again because that could well be a life changing decision of yours!

This is what the caption for ‘Being Cyrus’ says - “Who you let in can change your life”

Saif Ali Khan has done various interesting films in the past with last 5 years establishing him as an actor of substance. In his endeavor to do films based on varied concepts, he features as a central protagonist, Cyrus, in his first ever English film ‘Being Cyrus’. Produced by Miracle Cinefilms & Serendipity Films, ‘Being Cyrus’ is a coming of age film that marks the debut of Homi Adajania as a director while Salim Sulaiman provide the background score for the movie.

‘Being Cyrus’ is a story of six people and is set in a ‘Parsi’ household of Sethnas. Sethna family is headed by Fardoonjee Sethna [Honey Chhaya], an aging man, his two sons Dinshaw [Naseeruddin Shah] and Farokh [Boman Irani] and their wives Katy [Dimple Kapadia] and Tina [Simone Singh]. At one point of time the entire family stayed together but over a period of time internal conflicts drove them to live in separate households. Dinshaw and Katy lived in Panchgani (a small hill station near Mumbai) while Farokh and Tina stayed with Fardoonjee at an old building in Mumbai that was completely in ruins.

Dinshaw was a sculptor by profession and on meeting upon a complete stranger Cyrus [Saif Ali Khan], he allows him to stay at his house as a paying guest cum sculpting apprentice.

Cyrus comes close to the family and soon finds himself to be an integral part of Sethnas. Meanwhile an extra marital affair starts to begin in the household. Tension grows, skeletons start coming out of the closets, something bizarre happens and layers start unfolding one after another.

A deep rooted secret starts to unravel and mystery around the character of Cyrus starts engulfing everyone. Who is he? Where has he come from? What’s his agenda?

That’s not all as Farokh, Katy and Fardoonjee too get embroiled in the strange incidents that start happening around them.

And then there is a murder!

‘Being Cyrus’ takes various shades in its 90 minutes duration. Is it a drama? Or a family movie? Is it a comedy, a thriller or a deep rooted psychological drama?

Made in noir film making genre, ‘Being Cyrus’ is a film about mind games where an audience continues to guess about what’s in store for him at every instance. Crimes happen but no one is sure about its motive and the execution till the end strikes on your face. One string joins another and finally the suspense is revealed.

As per the film makers, ‘Being Cyrus’ is an obsessive, inconclusive, disorderly, and strangely humane story about an outsider struggling to get inside himself. It’s a thought provoking film that will take the audience through a journey of emotions with alarming twists.

‘Being Cyrus’ releases on 24th March.

Mr. 100% - The Real Player - A story of a gigolo

Mr. 100% - The Real Player - A story of a gigolo
[Wednesday, February 22, 2006]

Last Friday saw the release of a movie that dealt with the tale of a female prostitute. The movie was ‘Chingaari’ with the central role of a prostitute played by Sushmita Sen. In a few days from now, there would be another movie releasing around a similar character though the protagonist changes from female to a male. Yes, in today’s society, there are male prostitutes as well and this is what is depicted in the movie ‘Mr. 100% - The Real Player’ where the central protagonist is enacted by Aryan Vaid.

‘Mr. 100% - The Real Player’ tells us the tale of a man [Aryan Vaid] who chose to get into the prostitution of selling his body. This is a ‘choice’ that he made without being forced by anyone else. But there were multiple reasons behind this course of action taken by him. First and foremost he had a troubled childhood when in his teenage itself he lost his virginity. In an age of innocence he was exposed to sex and gradually he found himself becoming more and more fascinated and addicted to sex. He had multiple partners in a young age itself that gave his persona an altogether different dimension.

But this was not all! He was further exploited by his teachers that resulted in a corrupt mindset. Now his life took only one direction - a direction that had disaster written all over it! As (ill)luck would have it, all doors seemed to be shutting down on him after his encounter with a male sex worker, a gigolo [Irrfan Khan], who had been in this profession for years and took him alongside on this path to self destruction.

A path that was glamorous in the beginning but was destined to meet a quick end. A path that was like a forbidden fruit which tasted sweet in the beginning only to turn out to be poison.

It was not that he didn’t have a family life. He had a beautiful wife [Mahima Chaudhary], who on knowing about his dangerous escapades wanted to help him get out of it. But this was a swamp where he continued to go deeper down. Also on his side was an advertising agency owner [Payal Rohatgi] who was attracted to him and wanted him to quit this profession.

Such was the world of glamour and easy sex for him that he ignored any piece of advice that came from his well wishers and became a powerful name in the high society circles. He was now labeled ‘Mr. 100%’ as he was 100% in whatever he did and kept his ‘clients’ happy!

In a world of AIDS and other sex related diseases, a life style like this was always meant to come to a brutal end. He realized this fact a hard way when he saw his mentor falling prey to AIDS.

There was guilt, helplessness, regret, depression - but wasn’t this all coming too late?

Would there be redemption? Would there be any hopes of a better life from hereon? Would this be a lesson learnt for those who get trapped in the world of glamour?

In an age when the threat of AIDS is looming large over the entire world, would ‘Mr. 100%’ manage to survive inspite of being exposed to multiple partners?

Produced by Piyush Kumar and directed by Omprakash Makkar, ‘Mr. 100% - The Real Player’ releases soon.

Tom Dick Harry - A comedy of errors
[Tuesday, February 21, 2006]

2005 was one year when almost all comedies worked. Well, there were a few stray cases when a movie fell like a pack of cards but then that’s the risk that is always associated with filming a comic script. Nevertheless when one compares comedy to an action film or say, a sleazy film, the success ratio was far higher for it in the year gone by. Director Deepak Tijori takes on the challenge to carry a hit formula further and comes up with a multistarrer comedy film ‘Tom Dick Harry’. In the past he has made dark films like ‘Oops’, ‘Khamosh’ and ‘Fareb’ (none of which came anywhere close to hitting the bull’s eye at the box office) and now the time may just be right for him to instead try his hands at comedy.

Tom Dick Harry is about three young men who are named (obviously) Tom, Dick and Harry! In their early twenties, each of the three have one thing in common - they are handicapped when it comes to one of their senses.

Tom [Dino Morea] is deaf
Dick [Anuj Sawhney] is blind
Harry [Jimmy Shergill] is dumb

And when the three meet, there is fun all around!

Though the three have one or the other shortcoming, it would be wrong to believe that they could be taken for a ride. Because each of the three have something that others may not have - a power to sense something which a man on the street doesn’t possess!

Tom can hear that others cannot
Dick can see what others cannot
Harry can speak what others cannot

Confused? Well, that’s the intent because this is what forms the pretext of this rop roaring adventure that Tom, Dick and Harry plan to take us through.

Each of the three stay together as paying guests and are content with the way they are until their lives take a twist with the arrival of Celina [Celina Jaitley]! She comes to stay in the same colony as Tom, Dick and Harry and no wonder they fall for her beauty and charms. Now each of the three has one mission in life - to somehow make Celina fall in love with him! But does Celina care for any of them? Naah! Because for her none of them really matters.

While the three continue to woo her, matters are not so straightforward at least for Tom. That’s because there is a local ‘machchiwaali’ (fisher-woman) Bijlee [Kim Sharma] who is heads over heels in love with him.

There is fun, frolic, laughter and everything else that is associated with young hearts falling in love with each other. But things were never meant to be all rosy for Tom, Dick and Harry. Because soon destiny makes them confront BAD MAN Suparno [Gulshan Grover] who is REALLY BAD! One incident leads to another and the three soon find themselves trapped in a game from where it is only themselves who can help to find a way out.

On the other hand Suparno is not alone as he has on his side the knowledge, skills and the art of none other than the three villains who have immortalized themselves in the history of villainy:

They are Gabbar, Shakaal and Mogambo!

What made Suparno go after the lives of three innocent boys Tom, Dick and Harry?
When would the three get back to their love and enjoy a simple life?
Where would destiny take the three?

Come, join the chase that is filled with comedy of errors.

Produced by Sudhir Kumar, Surendra Bhatia and Avinash Bhatia from Oracle Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. (who had earlier come up with ‘Fun - Can Be Dangerous Sometimes’ last year), Tom Dick Harry releases this summer.

Banana Brothers - A hilarious take on NRIs
[Wednesday, February 15, 2006]

Till around a couple of years back, there was immense craze around movies that were based in USA but revolved around the lives of Indians there. Most of them had a dash of humor in them with some of the notable flicks being ABCD, American Desi, American Chai, Where Is The Party Yaar etc. Ideal multiplex fares, they were grabbed by both hands initially but slowly and steadily the interest level of the audience in these movies died down.

Now after a break, yet another flick that belongs to the same genre gets ready for release soon and is titled ‘Banana Brothers’. A hilarious take on the lives of two men who become ‘Banana Brothers’, it is a Girija Shankar movie.

Its not uncommon to see Indians, especially from the North, migrating to USA and Canada in search of dreams, aspirations and desires to make it big. And more often than not, these people have someone in these countries who have already established themselves. Baldev Singh [Gurusewak Mann] and Ketan Shah [Anupam Kher] were two such men who had stepped on the city of dreams but after years of struggle it seemed that their dreams were on the way to turn sour.

Baldev, who thought he will make it big one day had merely managed to raise to the status of a local cabbie! Ketan, who thought his sharp mind would land him in places merely managed to land up in odd jobs, including motels!

With no great future in sight, the two of them met and soon were tied by a strong bond of friendship. They cared for each other so much that Baldev even took Ketan home and offered him to stay together. But there was a trouble!

The ‘home’ was not Baldev’s own but instead a room that was rented by Jayashree Chatterjee [Radha Saluja], a Bengali landlady who herself had settled down in USA after migrating more than 40 years ago. Now she was content while staying with her daughter Reema [Seema Rahmani], inspite of the fact that Reema was divorced sometime back.

While Baldev and Reema had started falling in love with each other, no love was lost between Reema and Ketan as she didn’t consider him in high regard.

On the other hand Ketan had troubles of his own as wanted to run away from being constantly chased by a wealthy divorced socialite Sabrina Malhotra [Mary L. Carter]

While things didn’t show any signs of improvement in the financial status of Baldev and Ketan, they tried to find a way out by going independent. Baldev decided to pickup lead from Rajinder [Gulshan Grover], his cousin, who had once helped him when he had entered USA but after that got busy in his profession as an event organizer. A Casanova of sorts, he was divorced and lived with his mother and teenage son Mikka.

For one of his star-shows, Rajinder had roped in Johney Lever and when Rajinder approached him for a job, he accepted it gleefully and gave him an assignment to handle the show. But even for such shows, he had the mind of a BAD MAN running all the time. He would himself earn in millions but pay the stars only a part of their remuneration by claiming losses during the show.

Both Baldev and Ketan joined the organizing team but as soon as they realized the modus operandi of Rajinder, they took the matters in their hands. Their first step was to warn Johney Lever about Rajinder’s vicious plan while the next step was for the trio to teach Rajinder a lesson.

And from hereon followed a hilarious journey of the lifetime for everyone involved!

Written by Malvinder Shankar and Dhieraj Mohan, ‘Banana Brothers’ is slated for release soon.

Shaadi Se Pehle - A comedy of errors

Shaadi Se Pehle - A comedy of errors
[Monday, February 13, 2006]

Is she? Or is she not? Is she the best for me? Or can I get one better?

How many times does a guy think in this direction ’shaadi se pehle’? Afterall the fear of uncertainty more often than not makes a guy wonder whether he is getting his best match. But how many times has someone tried to think in an opposite direction i.e. from the girl’s point of view? Whether I am the best for her? Does she deserve someone better than me? Would I be able to keep her happy?

Well, overly emotional Ashish Kapoor [Akshaye Khanna] thought so! He was extremely happy with the love of his life Rani [Ayesha Takia]. Inseparable and very much in love, it seemed that nothing could separate that! Except for Ashish’s own thoughts!

He was one man who got rattled very soon. Any emotional moment around him and it would become extremely impossible for him to control his emotions. Such was the extent of this unnerving state of his that he was dependant upon pills. More often than not, this would give rise to funny situations but Ashish was not the one who could change!

This was something that caught the eyes of Rani’s parents too. Looking at such a medical issue with their would-be son-in-law, it was but natural for them to keep the love birds away. To make matters worse, Ashish had a friend in the form of Rohit [Aftab Shivdasani] who could give his right hand and left foot for Rani.

With friends like these, would Ashish have ever needed an enemy?

Still, Rani’s love for Ashish could not be shaken by any of such factors that went against their relationship. She instilled confidence in him and both were all set to tie the knot. Until, a tragedy knocked their doors!

It was discovered that Ashish had cancer!

But was that really the case? Off course not! In a comedy of errors like this, how could one even imagine such a tragic twist to the tale? It so happened that doctors mentioned hypertension and somehow Ashish realized it as cancer. And now he is completely shaken up.

But this time around he doesn’t want his emotions to completely overshadow him. Instead he comes up with a thought. A thought that could come to only one in a million!

He now wants Rani to hate him and marry someone else before he eventually succumbs to cancer!

And for this he has a plan in place.
A plan that needs to be executed ’shaadi se pehle’!

Enters into the scene Sania [Mallika Sherawat] - the mother of all bombs. Specifically roped in for the purpose of deceiving Rani, Ashish and Sania indulge into a lovey-dovey affair. All in front of Rani!

Distraught and heartbroken, Rani walks out of Ashish’s life and bows down to the wishes of her family to marry someone else. And this ’someone else’ turns out to be none other than Rohit. Everyone is happy now. Ashish feels he has done his best for the love of his life. Rani has managed to move on in life. And what about Rohit? Well, he is obviously on the 7th heaven. But would all this continue for long?

Because soon Ashish realizes his folly! He gets to know that he was safe and sound with his death still years away. Afterall he didn’t suffer from cancer! Completely amazed by the turn of events around him, he wants to do the next logical thing - get back Rani! But then there are issues galore:

Marriage of Rani and Rohit is fixed
Rani doesn’t trust Ashish any more
Sania is stuck on him

And the biggest of all

Anna [Suneil Shetty], elder brother of Rani, who is a notorious don, wants to have him killed!

And Ashish has to clear up all this mess - shaadi se pehle!

A laugh riot arriving this April, SSP is a Mukta Arts production that is directed by Satish Kaushik and has music by today’s numero uno composer Himesh Reshammiya.
