Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota - When fate intervenes
[Wednesday, May 31, 2006]

What if I could have done it differently? What if the situation could have been different? What if the reaction to a particular incident may have been different?

It is not uncommon for mankind to get into a retrospective mode thinking whether things could have happened differently.

Yun hota to kya hota? Agar aisa hota to? What if?

For a performer like Naseeruddin Shah, it would have required an excellent script to motivate him for coming behind the camera. Uttam Gada does exactly that as he spins a tale about numerous individuals who are a part of four different stories and only meet in the end to provide a logical conclusion to the narrative. With the concept of heroes and heroines fast fading away as far as new age cinema is concerned, and all that is supposed to matter is the script, screenplay and the characterization, Naseeruddin Shah treads the middle path as he gets some of the best actors in the business, most of whom have made an impression in both commercial and art form of cinema.

Shot in Mumbai and New York, ‘Yun Hota To Kya Hota’ is a tale of 20 odd individuals who are a part of the 4 stories in the film. A mix of drama, romance, action, comedy and some surprises, YHTKH has its four stories centered on the prime characters of Tilottima, Salim, Rahul and Rajubhai. Belonging to different strata of society with different aspirations, desires, expectations and motivations, they have a certain spice in their lives that promise to keep a viewer glued to the narrative. Let’s have a look at who they are!

Tilottima Punj [Konkana Sen]

She is a newly wed bride who has got everything that she always wanted. A handsome young man as her hubby who promises to present her all the love in the world and shower her with happiness and fun. Hemant [Jimmy Shergill] is the kind of man that she always dreamt of and the dream turned into reality as she met him through internet and soon fell in love with him, only to get married soon.

With both Tilottima and Hemant being at the top of the world, happiness seemed to be THE essence of their lives. But that was never meant to be long lived as Hemant had to report back to USA at his workplace. A brave woman, she made it a resolve to be united with her husband and for this she could go to any lengths, even if that meant lying to the immigration officer or apply any other trick in the book!

Was she successful in her endeavor?

Salim Rajabali [Irrfan Khan]

It was not easy to be the son of a GODMOTHER [Saroj Khan], who was feared by everyone as a lady don! That was not all as Salim, a stockbroker by profession, had more trouble in store as he fell in love with a 40+ female Namrata [Suhasini Mulay], a lady who truly realized her sexuality and knew how to make use of it most effectively! She used Salim who soon found out that he is being cheated upon and in no time finds himself involved in a killing. Backed by the might of his powerful and well connected mother, he soon finds himself traveling abroad to escape law.

Was he successful in his run?

Rahul Bhinde [Ankur Khanna]

One of the many young boys who have dreams in their eyes about studying at a prestigious institute abroad, Rahul could see his dream turning true at just an arm’s length. The only [and the most important] trouble? He was poor and couldn’t afford the admission fees. To make matters worse, he also had to look after his father. Destiny was kind to him as the solution to his problem arrived as quickly as the problem itself and soon he was on his way to his dream university.

Was he successful in fulfilling his aspirations?

Rajubhai Patel [Paresh Rawal]

He was THE showman! If not a showman behind the camera, a showman behind numerous stage shows that are held abroad. His work may seem small in scale but for innumerous upcoming artists, he was GOD! Giving a right chance to all the right candidates, he would ensure that a few lakhs exchange hands before a new face gets his/her first tryst with the world of glamour through his shows. Quiet uncomplicated and straightforward, the only time he had a change of heart was when a young girl approached him for one of his shows abroad! Reason? The girl turned out to be the daughter of none other than his ex-love Tara [Ratna Pathak Shah].

Not someone to part away with his share easily, he was tempted to do so when he realized that Tara had mortgaged her house to pay her daughter’s ‘fees’ for an entry to the show! And now Rajubhai had a mission to protect the girl at any cost and provide her the best of exposure. For this, he escorted her like a father figure for her first trip to a foreign land.

Was he successful in getting the girl closer to her goals?

Tilottima, Salim, Rahul and Rajubhai – each of them had a good enough reason to travel abroad. And soon they would find themselves as a part of a tragic event that will shake their world!

A Shabbir Boxwala production, YHTKH is ready for some time now and is now waiting for an opportune time to hit the screens.

Samsara – The world and spirituality

Cast: Shawn Ku, Chirsty Chung
Direction: Pan Nalin

Samsara - The world and spirituality
[Monday, May 22, 2006]

Since time immortal there have been innumerous debates about spirituality and the world we live in! Which is the REAL world? Which is the RIGHT world? Which is the CHOSEN world? These are just some of the questions that come to mind when one aims to experience spirituality!

Another glaring question that never fails to come to mind is: “What is more important: satisfying one thousand desires or conquering just one?”

Tashi [Shawn Ku] was a young man who finally got an answer to this question in his journey of life. He was the man who aspired to find spiritual enlightenment. And for this, he went into solitary meditation in a remote hermitage based in Ladakh, Himalayas!

After having meditated for around 3 years, he reaches his ancient monastery and starts regaining his lost strength. Most of the men in his place would have been thrilled to witness some level of spiritualism in his life. He was thrilled too and had his life dedicated to spirituality. But then something different happened to him. Something strange that surprised him and also made him question himself!

He experienced a strong sexual awakening in him that was hardly anticipated or expected!

It may have been possible for him to return to the world of meditation and regain his hold over himself but matters only became further difficult for him as he came across Pema [Chirsty Chung], a beautiful young woman. The two met in a village where Tashi had gone to perform a harvest blessing and it was simply love at first sight.

It was a difficult choice for Tashi to make.

On one hand he had his spiritual inclinations and teachings while on the other hand he had the LOVE of his life Tashi who made him question the very inclinations and teachings. On one hand he had his monetary where he had lived since the age of five while on the other he had an entire SAMSARA, THE WORLD, spread out for him.

It was decision time for Tashi. And a realization beckoned! Tashi found out that in order to give up the world, it was first required to experience its existence.

He quit the monastery and married Pema!

Along with Pema he discovered the power of sexual union and how togetherness meant joys and sorrows alternatively. Years passed by and they had a son whom they named Karma [Tenzin Tashi].

Meanwhile inspite of being a ‘common woman’ rather than someone who had lived her life for spirituality, Pema came across as a person who had a spiritual side to her. Now this was something that never failed to surprise and challenge Tashi!

A beautiful spiritual love story shot entirely in Ladakh, ‘SAMSARA’ is one of those rare films in the world to have been shot at an average altitude of 15000 feet. Written and directed by Pan Nalin, the film is gearing up for its release in India soon.

Naksha – Let the adventure begin

Cast: Sunny Deol , Sameera Reddy, Viveik Anand Oberoi, Jackie Shroff
Direction: Sachin Bajaj
Music: Pritam

Naksha - Let the adventure begin
[Friday, May 19, 2006]

‘Adventure’ is one genre that Bollywood hasn’t explored much over the decades. The closest that comes to mind is ‘Kacche Dhaage’ directed by Milan Luthria. The film had a ‘road element’ to it and revolved around the journey of two step-brothers played by Ajay Devgan and Saif Ali Khan.

In a few weeks time comes ‘Naksha’ [meaning a map], that is expected to be one its kinds adventure movies, as far as an Indian movie is concerned. Coming from a debutant director Sachin Bajaj, it is indeed a brave effort to make a film that breaks the norm and attempts to do something truly different.

We all live in a modern world that is made of concrete, boasts of a fast life and has everything available at the door step! But how about a world that existed before us? A world that had its own essence centuries back! That too had its own culture, heritage and stories to tell. There could be numerous myths, lies and tales to tell but fact cannot be denied that there is definitely some iota of truth in whatever we have been hearing since ages!

And along with truth come some deadly secrets that are best kept buried! Because when they are unearthed, things are never the same again!

For those with honest intentions, this could be the means to know about a world from the past and gain from that knowledge. But for those who want to use this knowledge for their own advantage rather than using it for the world’s benefit, availability of such knowledge could be catastrophic!

‘Naksha’, an ancient map, was one such piece of knowledge that threatened to reach the hands of the EVIL!

Professor Kapil Acharya had dedicated his life to the world of archaeology. For him, the quest to know more about the world of the past was a desire…a passion! A man with utmost honest intentions, he got lucky when he got hold of an ancient map that lead to something exciting and intriguing!

But with ‘good’ comes ‘evil’ and the same happened in case of Professor Kapil when evil cast its eyes on his interesting piece of information. Not to let the map go into the hands of evil, he preferred to die! And along with him went an artifact that could have opened the gates to a secret that could have further lead to a pool of knowledge!

Years went by and Professor’s son grew up to be a handsome young man Rohit [Viveik Oberoi]. Soon he comes across a copy of the same ‘naksha’ while exploring his late father’s study. Now Rohit had one mission in his life – to find out what was so important about this artifact that could have even led to his father’s demise! He embarks on a journey and now begins an adventure!

An adventure that had thrills, suspense, love and a destination that unfolded numerous secrets!

As Rohit is en route to his destination, he is abducted by the group of men who work for the evil! Help comes thankfully in the form of Vir [Sunny Deol], Rohit’s step brother, who emerges on the scene at just the right time to save his brother. Though there is no love lost between the step-brothers due to the nature of their relationship, Vir now wants Rohit to forget about his deadly mission and return home safely. On the other hand Rohit has promised to himself that he would get to the depth of the secrets!

Journey spices up from this moment on as both the brothers try to prove a point to each other! Sometimes hilarious and sometimes dramatic, proceedings never turn dull for a single moment as the brothers explore dense forests and high mountains with nature at its unpredictable best!

Things turn further unpredictable for Rohit as he comes across Sameera [Sameer Reddy] who is a travel show hostess and finds herself in the thick of the ‘jungle’. While it takes time for Rohit and Sameera to get comfortable with each other, relationship starts improving between the two brothers on their extended journey. While there are lighter moments galore with Vir trying to get the two youngsters closer to each other, he also has a challenge in hand to ensure their safety from the evil powers and the dense forest, both of which are equally challenging and frightening!

As they come closer to their destination of finding the secret of the ‘naksha’, the journey continues to be exciting, engaging and entertaining as mystical elements too start emerging on the scene!

Where did the trio eventually reach? Did evil reach before them? Or were they followed all along by the evil? What was the secret behind this ‘naksha’? Would the world remain same forever once the destination has been reached?

An adventure thriller written by Milap Zaveri & Tushar Hiranandani, ‘Naksha’ also stars Jackie Shroff in a key role along with newcomer Mridula Chandrashekhar. The film is being slated for a July release.

Corporate – A world behind the glass walls

Cast: Bipasha Basu, Kay Kay
Direction: Madhur Bhandarkar

Corporate - A world behind the glass walls
[Monday, May 15, 2006]

There have been stories about rich and poor. There have been stories about good and evil. There have been stories about powerful and weak.

Now witness the story of POWERFUL V/S POWERFUL!

Because that’s the essence of Madhur Bhandarkar’s second in the trilogy of straight-out-of-life films – CORPORATE.

Because CORPORATE is the world that is ruled by the POWER of P

PAISA POWER POLITICS

And when the three are held strongly in the hands of one single entity, the entity becomes supreme and undefeatable. In one word – INVINCIBLE!

For ages, the world of business has been powered by one single philosophy – KNOW SOMETHING THAT NO ONE ELSE KNOWS! And this has been qouted by none other than ARISTOTLE himself. Now in 21st century, matters have become further complex as it just doesn’t suffice to know what other doesn’t know. In fact it is to know what the other person knows…and a little more!

Madhur Bhandarkar brings to you to the story of two such warring corporate houses lead by Vinay Sehgal [Rajat Kapoor], Managing Director, Sehgal Group of Industries and Dharmesh Marwah [Raj Babbar], Managing Director, Marwah International Pvt. Ltd. While there are people like Kay Kay Menon, Harsh Chayya, Bharat Dhabolkar, Minissha Lamba and Sameer Dattani on either side of the two business groups, there is Nishigandha [Bipasha Basu], a businesswoman with high aspirations and hunger to move to the top, who is at the center of all the action.

What happens when market heats up to welcome international players? Both Sehgal Group of Industries and Marwah International Pvt. Ltd. try to get their hands on the best of the deals. In the process what comes across is a cut throat competition that threatens to cross the boundaries of being healthy.

Principals become a thing of the past, ethics are forgotten, evil takes over, friendship turns sour, rules are bent, hunger of power eats up everything and anything that comes in the way, corruption shows its ugly face and all that remains is the thirst for wealth, fame and success!

Is that the business that goes behind the glass walls of a glitzy corporate house?

If the war was just between two individuals or two business houses at maximum, the things could have remained behind the scenes! But that’s not all as all the fight, drama and its implications impact the common man on the street too. The man who is unaware about the way a business works and just worries about his next meal!

CORPORATE. A world in itself that has all the elements involved in its day to day functioning, whether it is the executives, the politicians or the coming together of sex and corruption.

How does all that happen? That’s the question Bhandarkar aims to answer through his eye opener ‘CORPORATE’ that opens on July 7.

Men Not Allowed – When ladies decide a way to live

Men Not Allowed - When ladies decide a way to live
[Friday, May 12, 2006]

Two years back director Karan Razdan came up with the first Hindi commercial film about lesbians – ‘ Girlfriend ‘. During the same time Shrey Srivastava, director of Insaaf (Sanjay Suri, Dino Morea) started working on ‘Men Not allowed’ based on a similar theme. Circa May 2006 and this should be yet another skin flick for Payal Rohatgi that comes at a time when going seems to quite good her for in BIG league with films like ‘36 China Town’ and ‘Corporate’ give her ample scope to display her acting talent too in addition to her customary skin show.

What would any man or woman want most in his/her life at any stage? Pure unadulterated love with no dishonesty, jealousy or selfishness! This is what Tanya [Payal Rohatgi] and Urmila [Tina Majumdar] wanted but unfortunately never found it through their growing years and even when they were in their prime. Prime reason for their discomfort with whatever happened around them? MEN!

What was their past? What made them so intolerant to the mere touch of a man? What was it that made them defy the world and take a plunge into a relationship that is considered taboo by the society?

Meet Tanya. She had everything what a girl living on the other side of the fence may have ever wanted. Rich father, a bungalow, big cars, comfortable living, every facility, status, name, fame….just ask for anything and she had it all! But what was that disturbed her the most?

Being disillusioned!

She was simple disillusioned with the way life had treated her so far, especially her father Karan [Nassar Abdulla]. With all his power and wealth, he continued to make merry in his life and had relationships with number of women since the death of his wife. Though he ran an advertising agency along with Tanya, he was hardly caring and didn’t really worry about her well being.

The only ray of hope for Tanya was her boyfriend Shekhar [Aryan Vaid]. But is life always a walk into the sunset?

Their marriage was announced and just when it seemed that Tanya would be able to move away from her artificial world, her dreams shattered completely as she realized that Shekhar too was a womanizer! This was THE moment that disillusioned her and she decided that from now on MEN were NOT ALLOWED in her world!

Meet Urmila. A model by profession, she was finding it hard to make a mark in the world of glamour. Destiny brings her closer to Tanya as she gets an assignment for her advertising agency. As luck would have had it, she fails to deliver. Looking at this, Tanya delves deeper and realizes that Urmila too had a past that had resulted in her hating MEN forever. Coming from a disturbed family of a drug peddler father and a drug addict mother, she was forced to be with her uncle after the death of her parents. Her uncle too turned out to be a demon as he tried to take advantage of the situation and molest her. Later she was sent to an orphanage but her horrific period continued even in this new world.

As soon as she came out of this world, she took a decision. In her new world, MEN were NOT ALLOWED!

Realising that Urmila’s past was not less tormenting than her own, Tanya came closer to her and soon they turned into lovers. With her help, Urmila managed to reach the top of the glamour world. Meanwhile a new man came across Tanya. A celebrity model, Vikram [Tarun Arora] was a handsome young man who wanted to be further successful and had intentions of marrying Tanya. Tanya was naturally against this relationship but her father, who gets to know about her relationship with Urmila, hatches a plan to separate the two lovers!

He plays a dirty game of jealousy and love by requesting Vikram to get into a relationship with Urmila so that Tanya feels disturbed about it and has no other option than to marry him due to sheer jealousy factor!

Tables turn around for the two lovers as they get married to different men. But could a marriage, that has its root in compromise and jealousy, ever work?

Feelings of both Tanya and Urmila are rekindled as they stay away from each other and decide to get back to their world.

The world where MEN are NOT ALLOWED!

Delayed by almost a couple of years, MNA is a Shri Vardan Pictures production with Tina Majumdar playing the role of other lead heroine who, along with Payal, shuts down all doors on men! Composer Sanjeev Srivastava and lyricist Shaheen Iqbal handle the musical score.
