Tusshar Kapoor: “People who do any and every film end up with nothing”

Tusshar Kapoor: “People who do any and every film end up with nothing”
Wednesday, June 28, 2006
He is an unconventional looking hero with a strong producer family backing him all the way. Having started off with a super successful ‘Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai’ (Kareena Kapoor’s biggest hit as a solo lead till date), Jitendra’s son Tusshar Kapoor met with a few speed-breaking flops till he came into his own with his sister Ekta Kapoor’s sex comedy ‘Kya Kool Hain Hum’. He is awaiting the release of another comedy, ‘Golmaal’ as IndiaGlitz gets him talking about films, films and more films. What one realizes is that in spite of belonging to an illustrious film family, this Kapoor has his feet firmly planted on ground. And his amiable charm is natural and not a plastic coated one.

What is your next release ‘Golmaal’ all about?

‘Golmaal’ is a family comedy about four guys who are good for nothing. They live for each day. And how, they run away from situations, escaping from lenders and all the awkward situations. It’s about how they land up in a house and how they manage to stay in that house and what ‘Golmaal’ happens in that house is what the story is all about.

Not too many girls except Rimi…So is it a film about male bonding?

It’s one of those male bonding films who go through funny situations. And with Paresh who plays a blind man with his wife who also plays a blind woman, there are lots of funny situations.

You started off with a dancing hero image in ‘Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai’….But looking at your films off late do you think you haven’t been really capitalizing on that?

Because the films that I’ve done in the last two three years like ‘Khaki’, ‘Gayab’ didn’t suit my character to break into a dance….Kya Kool Hain Hum had it but it didn’t have me totally capitalizing upon my dancing skills. But now, I am doing a few solo hero films. In ‘Good Boy Bad Boy’ I am doing a dance song in a dance competition. So, it depends upon the genre of the film.

Your role in ‘Khaki’ was supposed to be done by Akshay Khanna

Yeah he left it at the last minute…Thank God for that. I had ten days for preparing before the film started and it was such a big cast with a film directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi. I was nervous but from the first day itself, everything went very well. If you have a chemistry with the director then that shows on the screen. I am also playing a small cameo in his next film.

Raj Kumar Santoshi was supposed to direct a movie for your banner also?

Yeah…But it didn’t work out then.

Will you consider ‘Khaki’ to be a turning point in your career?

Yes surely. My earlier films worked very well but then I made a few mistakes. Some films didn’t live up to my expectations. The songs worked but the films didn’t. That’s why I changed my strategy and ‘Khaki’ was the first film that proved to be a turning point. Since then I have been selective and things have been good. Hope ‘Golmaal’ adds to my successes.

So you too are going the Aamir Khan way…

I think quality works. Quality control is important and it adds to your brand value. Today Aamir is such a big star. People know that he works only in good films. He pays attention to every aspect and that impression communicates to people as well. People who do any and every film end up diluting their worth. They are left with nothing. But it’s not as if that I will do only one film in two years. If I like the script I do it. I would want my releases to happen more often but they should be well worth it.

How was it working with actors like Ajay, Paresh, Arshad and Sharman in ‘Golmaal’?

All these guys are ‘Maharathi’ in comedy. It is a very ‘hat ke’ comedy

What are the films that you are currently doing?

After ‘Golmaal’ my next release will be ‘Good Boy Bad Boy’, then I shall start shooting for ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’ which is a multi starrer. Then I am doing a film for Shyam Bajaj called ‘Agar’ and after that I will do a film for my own banner directed by Neeraj Vohra which has not been titled yet.

And what about the sequel to ‘Kya Kool Hain Hum’ which was supposed to start soon after the first version became a hit?

That will start next year. And I think people will remember ‘Kya Kool Hain Hum’ for they remembered ‘Hera Pheri’ and went and saw the sequel in huge numbers even after six years gap. Moreover Sangeeth (Sivan) is busy with a few projects and he has to finish that before we can start on our film.

Rimi Sen: “I would do a ‘Black’ when I am old and can’t dance”

Rimi Sen: “I would do a ‘Black’ when I am old and can’t dance”
Tuesday, June 27, 2006
She says that she is not like the usual Bengali girls who are into intellectually stimulating cinema. In other words, no Satyajit Ray for her! She likes her song-n-dance, a dash of comedy, good people to work with and a large cast so that she doesn’t have the burden of expectations on her petite shoulders. Meet the effervescent actress Rimi Sen whose latest comic flick ‘Phir Hera Pheri’ is rewriting history at the Box Office. With her next stylish comedy ‘Golmaal’ about to be released in a couple of weeks, Rimi gets up-close-n-candid exclusively with IndiaGlitz:

What kind of feedback have you got for your performance in ‘Phir Hera Pheri’

(Diverting the question) I am getting good roles, getting a chance to work with good people. But I don’t want to do too much of comedy. I am just waiting for the right opportunities. It is not as if I won’t do any more comedies. Maybe one or two. But I won’t do only comedy comedy comedy.

Do you think the male members of the cast in ‘Phir Hera Pheri’ were highlighted more than you and Bipasha?

These days mostly it is the male dominated films that are being made. Female oriented themes are few and far in between. And they who make such films burn their fingers at the Box Office as such films don’t run. It is better to do films with good banners and good actors.

What is your criterion for selecting a role?

In the first two years I concentrated on who’s the director, producer and actor. Now I am concentrating on director, actor and then I am interested in finding out as to how my role is going to shape up.

Would you like to do any female oriented roles?

No…Not now. Very unsafe. I feel people want to watch good actors. And personally I don’t think I have that capability of pulling audiences to theatres merely on my appeal.

In ‘Deewane Hue Pagal’, you were the solo heroine while Akshay, Shahid, Sunil and Aftab ran after you. Critics even appreciated your performance in that film…

If I have seven or eight films then I shall do a film which has only me as the solo lead heroine.

In ‘Golmaal’ you are the only heroine as well…

(Being evasive again) ‘Golmaal’ is a very colorful film. It’s a young film involving young people. I had a lot of fun doing it.

How was the cast to work with?

Arshad, Sharman, Ajay….They are great people to work with. I hoped the shooting shouldn’t have ended.

Did you have boys chasing you in college?

No boy comes after me as I talk so much.

What is you Zodiac Sign?

Virgo

There have been reports that you are heavily into workouts in Gym and that you frequent the Gym religiously six days a week…

People say anything. Half of the days I go to gym and the other days I don’t go to gym at all. I go sometime when I don’t have any work just for timepass. And by seeing other people doing workout I feel as if I have done my workout as well.

You started with a video for Pop group Euphoria which was directed by Pradip Sarkar. And then you did a Cola Add with Aamir Khan. Would you like to do an Add again?

If the brand is good and if the money is great then why not…

If a Palash Sen (Euphoria) asks you to do a video for them at this juncture in your career, would you like to do it?

Mmmm…It depends. If the video is good then I would want to do it. I am connected to them, have worked with them before so if the opportunity comes again I would definitely do it as I started my career with them.

Has ‘Parinita’ director Pradip Sarkar approached you for a film or have you approached him for a role in any of his film?

I am in conversation. But till the time something is signed on the dotted lines it won’t be proper to say anything about it.

Being a Bengali have you ever thought of doing intellectually stimulating roles like ‘Parineeta’.

I don’t have the sense to understand all this artistic sensibilities. I don’t understand Satyajit Ray kind of cinema. Whatever my director tells me I just go ahead and do it. If I like the script and if the people are good then I do a film. And I don’t think like other Bengali women I am beautiful at all. I am an exception of a Bengali. Exceptional Bengali!

Who are the directors you’d like to work with?

Abbas Mastan, Anees Bazmee. There are too many actually.

Any serious roles like ‘Black’ for you…

I would do such roles when I grow old. When I won’t be fit to dance and all that, then I would do such roles.

Ever thought of doing item songs…

No item songs for me

Rajesh Roshan: “I remixed my songs out of anger”

Rajesh Roshan: “I remixed my songs out of anger”
Saturday, June 24, 2006
He is a weaver of unmatched melodies. And for the last four decades he has churned out some great music in classic films like ‘Kunwara Baap’, ‘Julie’, ‘Des Pardes’, ‘Mr Natwarlal’, ‘Yaarana’, ‘Jurm’, ‘Karan Arjun’, ‘Kaho Na Pyaar Hai’, ‘Koi Mil Gaya’ and with his latest offering ‘Krrish’ breaking new records in music sales, Rajesh Roshan continues to rule the Chartbusters List. Son of timeless music composer Roshan and younger brother of hotshot filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, Rajesh prefers doing less but quality work. In an exclusive interview with IndiaGlitz the day when nephew Hrithik Roshan propelled ‘Krrish’ released in cinema halls the world over, Rajesh Roshan unwinds in a cheerful mood:

How has been the response to ‘Krrish’ for the first day?

The response is very good. And judging by the first day’s response, ‘Krrish’ is all set to be a super duper hit. It’s great news for all of us.

Music of ‘Krrish’ has been received very well by the public while the critics have appreciated the variety offered by you

Variety was the demand of the story. The first half of the film is based in village and so there had to be that folk element woven into the story. The second half of the film is shot in Singapore where we had to have music according to the city taste. So, somewhere we had to find a middle road for making the music of this film. I can say it is a mixture of Indian as well as Western flavors.

You’ve been around for the last four decades and still going strong. What is the secret of your longevity?

God is kind. I have done less work, selected work. I work at a leisurely pace. And that may be the reason why I lay a lot of importance on the quality of my music.

What are some of your best works in your appraisal?

Kunwara Baap, Julie, Mr Natwarlal, Yaraana, Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, Jurm to name a few. ‘Jab Koi Baat Bigad Jaaye’ from ‘Jurm’ is one of my favorites.

Who have been your musical influences?

Old songs of S D Burman, Madan Mohan ji, My father Roshan Sahab and Shankar-Jaikishan are a few of my inspirations.

Your compositions are mostly Western and Folk. Do you think it limited you somehow?

In every decade, when generations change, new things come about. I was more influenced by the light western disco numbers. And that became my style. My songs from ‘Julie’ are still listened with great interest. So many people have remixed them. Therein lies my success that the context which I chose for myself has given inspiration to others to follow.

Who are the music directors of the current era whom you like?

I like Anu Malik, Himesh Reshamiya, A R Rehman, Pritam and Jatin-Lalit.

You’ve remixed two of your own songs in ‘Krrish’ and the end result is great.

I remixed my songs out of anger as I was not sure as to what somebody else might have done with my songs. These days, they just put a ‘Dhikchik Dhikchik’ in the name of remixing which I don’t find acceptable.

What other projects are you working on currently?

I am working on one or two films and I shall make the announcements at the right time.

You worked with Javed Akhtar in ‘Papa Kehte Hain’ but now you prefer taking new lyricists. Any particular reason for that?

It is easier to mould new writers. Since they are new, they work extra hard to give the best results.

Your nephew Hrithik Roshan has done an extraordinary job in ‘Krrish’. How does it feel?

He is a hardworking boy who takes his work seriously. It’s good to have this trait in a youngster. But not only him, everyone worked very hard on ‘Krrish’ and the results are there for everyone to see. Hope the next few days continue to remain the same as today.

Hrithik likes your music very much

He told me that he has copied all my songs from various films on CDs and that he listens to them constantly. According to him, my rhythm is simple and that’s what he likes about my music.

Neetu Chandra - “My mom deserves 90% credit for what I am today”

Neetu Chandra - “My mom deserves 90% credit for what I am today”
Saturday, June 24, 2006
Remember last year’’s comic hit ”Garam Masala” where Priyadarshan created a riot with Akshay Kumar and John Abraham in the lead? While the male starcast was acclaimed with the film’’s success being attributed to them, one can”t deny the fact that the three leading ladies [Neetu Chandra, Daisy, Nargis] too impressed in their debut outing. Now Neetu Chandra has been on a fast track as she has bagged a prestigious project like Madhur Bhandarkar’’s ”Signal” and has also recently delivered a hit down south in the form of ”Godavari”. Over to Neetu in Part II of this interview where she is visibly delighted about the recent success of her Telugu flick ”Godavari” as she also talks about her different looks in recent advertisements!

Starting with ‘Signal’, has the film already been completed?

It is nearing completion as we have already shot 60-70% of the film. We faced an issue recently when a complete outdoors set was damaged due to rains and our schedule went a little haywire. But nevertheless, we should be on the right path soon!

How else how you have been keeping yourself busy apart from theatre, dance, judo, literature, cosmetic etc.?

Well, in between I have also done a Telugu film called ‘Godavari’ that has just been released on May 19th and is already a big HIT. It’s sad that people outside South are not aware about the success of the film! It is a sweet triangular love story featuring two girls and a guy and is set on a journey aboard a huge ship. In fact one of the most reputed critics down south has appreciated my performance by stating that inspite of Neetu being a newcomer; she has done an awesome job. Now that’s really encouraging for someone like me who is just building her film career. In the movie, I play a character that is so different from the one I played in ‘Garam Masala’. Here I wear sarees and salwar-kameez throughout with knee length hair.

What’s the film about?

The film has the river ‘Godavari’ as its backdrop and is based on a journey from Hyderabad to Bhadrachalam. This is a third film directed by Sekhar Kammula and the man has already won a national award winner in addition to 6 state awards. The film has Sumantha, who is Nagarjuna’s nephew, in the lead along with Kamalinee Mukherjee who is an award winning actress herself!

With such an award winning crew around you, aren’t you expecting any award for yourself in ‘Godavari’?

[Laughs] See, I simply work when it comes to acting! At this moment I am not really thinking of which award I could be possibly getting for which movie! Yes, awards do come as an encouragement and if there are any my way then I would indeed be happy!

Apart from films, are you involved with any endorsements, advertisements or music videos?

Yes, number of them with the hottest one being the Bajaj bike ad with the song ‘Jhalak Dikhlaja’ in the background. Others have been with Mac Lubricant, Minto Fresh, Stayfree, IDEA mobile, ICICI, Cadbury and many more with each of them being A-list products!

Difficult to imagine that because every time it appears to be some new model!

That’s the beauty of it and I don’t know whether to be happy or sad about it that people can’t recognize me from one frame to another! There are so many different ways that I can look and it has also happened in the past that on looking at some pictures in my portfolio, it was difficult for even myself to believe the way I looked in some of them. But in the end, I guess it works in my favor to be able to be captured differently every time!

For a girl from Bihar, isn’t staying in Mumbai a lonely affair?

Oh no, not at all! In fact my parents stay with me only. And I must say here that whatever I am today, at least 90% credit for that must go to her. Though I come from a family of educated people, the kind of cultural background I come from, it was not easy to convince my family about my decision to join the glamour. Even I had thought at some point of time that I wanted to do something bigger in academics since in my joint family of 7 brothers, 5 of them have been IIT graduates! But somehow I decided that I wanted to be an actress and it was my mom who stood up and encouraged me to take the plunge. She has been supportive like this since childhood because ever since I remember she was very particular that I participate in extra curricular activities and come home only after winning. So hamesha mann mein rehta tha that I better keep winning!

Sharman Joshi: “Aamir Khan is a special guy”

Sharman Joshi: “Aamir Khan is a special guy”
Friday, June 23, 2006
He is not your typical conventional chocolate-good-looking Bollywood Hero. But, the dynamite talent that he possesses was witnessed by millions in Rakesh Mehra’s blockbuster of the year ‘Rang De Basanti’. IndiaGlitz brings you face-to-face with Sharman Joshi, the man who is better known these days as ‘Sukhi’ from his character in RDB. Having acted in comedies like ‘Style’, ‘Excuse Me’ and ‘Shaadi No. 1’ before RDB happened, Joshi would like to explore genres other than comedy as well. But for the time being he is anxiously awaiting his next multi-starrer ‘Golmaal’, a comedy, with hotshot actors like Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Tushhar Kapoor, Rimi Sen and Paresh Rawal.

How is life post Rang De Basanti?

Well, it is heartening, it is wonderful, it is great to be accepted by the critics and the public

Yours was the only character that was not well etched, like there was no reference point to your family life. Do you think your role was edited?

Nothing like that. See, every character need not have a family life because you are making a two and a half hour three hour film, so you possibly can not accommodate everything. What is required is if the character really demands a family life then it is different. It is as simple as that. It all depends upon the director’s point of view, the writer’s point of view as to how they imagine a certain role.

How was it like working with Aamir Khan?

It was a treat. Special. Very very special. He is a special guy, a superb actor. He is a special human being. And it is an experience which will be with me for a long time.

You started off with niche films like ‘Style’ and ‘Excuse Me’, then did a big budget ‘Shaadi No.1’ and now ‘Rang De Basanti’ which is a blockbuster. How has life changed in the last six months?

It is nice. When you are embarking on your career, one wants to work with leading directors, writers and actors. And I am living my dream. It’s a humbling feeling. Makes me feel more responsible.

I read that you’ve decided not to do any more comedies

Actually what I said was that I wouldn’t do any more comedies at this juncture. I don’t feel like doing an out and out comedy. I am alright with a romantic comedy film, a thriller comedy, an action comedy. But I just feel that I want to do comedy which has a little more substance to it. More depth to it. And two years down the line there may be a point of time when I may want to do an out and out comedy, so it is all relative, it’s intuitive.

What is it that you liked about Golmaal that made you sign it?

I loved the plot of ‘Golmaal’. I am an avid film watcher and for me personally I haven’t seen such an interesting plot. That’s the USP of this film. And hopefully our audiences feel that same too.

What are the other films that you are doing currently?

There’s one film that I’ve signed. Raj Kanwar and T-Series are producing it. Anurag Singh is the director. Rahul Khanna, Tanushree Dutta and myself are in it. It has not been titled yet. But it’s in the Social Drama genre.

Do you want to do solo films or is multi starrers the order of the day?

See, Solo films are also related to commerce. So, for me as an actor to pull off a film considering there’s a lot of money involved, I am ok with the fact that a producer or a director may not want to take that risk at this point of time. But of course if there’s an interesting script and there’s a producer backing it, I would latch on to it.

How is it like working with stars like stars like Arshad Warsi, Paresh Rawal and Ajay Devgan?

Ajay again is a big star, big actor. He has won national awards. I felt intimidated again. It’s the same process that started from ‘Shaadi No.1’. First Sanjay Dutt, then Aamir Khan and now Ajay Devgan. But all these three men have this special quality that they put you at ease. They make sure that their co-stars are comfortable. They ensure a healthy working environment so that as an actor I can give my best. As far as Arshad is concerned, then his timing is a treat. His common sense, his spontaneity, it keeps you on the toes and keeps you alive. And it becomes quite easy for you as an actor as you know that once you’ve said your line, you shall get the right kind of response. Paresh Rawal again. His theatre background. And the fact that he worked with my dad Arvind Joshi was a big help. I’ve seen Paresh bhai as a kid. I’ve sat in the same green room with him. It was as if I was living my childhood dream.

You have quite a bit of theatre experience yourself…

I have around eight odd years of theatre experience. Since the time I’ve graduated from college I’ve been associated with the stage.

Any plans of doing work with director N Chandra who gave you a break with ‘Style’

Nothing as yet. But if there’s something in the offing, then I would love to do it.
