Lage Raho Munna Bhai - Munna meets Gandhi!
[Monday, July 31, 2006]

Ek kahanai khatam to dujee shuru ho gayee…Mamu!!

That’s ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ for you - second in the series of the brand that goes by the name of Munnabhai and Circuit! The team of producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and director Rajkumar Hirani return with Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi in this yet another social entertainer that also includes Vidya Balan with Boman Irani as the usual suspect. But wait, there is someone else too! Who? Read on to know more!

Not much introduction is needed for our lovable hero Munnabhai [Sanjay Dutt] and his sidekick Circuit [Arshad Warsi]. With a heart of gold and innocent antics, the two may just be the right people in the wrong profession - that of ‘dadagiri’. But neither the world nor are they complaining!

In this perfect world of a simple life sans any tension or ‘lafda’, dear Munnabhai encounters a trouble. A trouble that goes by the name of love! And the girl with whom he is besotted is someone whom he has never seen! She is ‘Jhanvi’ [Vidya Balan], a RJ [Radio Jockey] who appears in her daily radio show!

Everything about Jhanvi’s voice makes Munna freeze and listen to her voice for hours at stretch. Whether it’s her opening greeting of ‘Good Morning Mumbai’ or the rest of the words that flow from her, Munna loves just about everything about her. And now he wants to marry her!

In a world of complexities, even this turned out to be quite a simple exercise for him. Except for the fact that as per Jhanvi’s knowledge Munnai is not a ‘bhai’ but a professor. And the subject too is simply matchless!

HISTORY!!

From the present day ‘bhaigiri’ to the days in the past of ‘history’, it’s quite a journey for Munna! Well, this is not enough as truly convinced about Munna’s credentials, Jhanvi now has a task set for him i.e. to deliver a history lecture to her entire family.

Munna is in a soup but as always there is Circuit to get the things back in order. He comes up with a plan that was designed to sort out Munna’s simple problem centered on love! Little did Munna and Circuit know that the outcome of this plan would change the lives of everyone forever? This is because something unexpected happens!

PRESENT meets the PAST!
From HISTORY, a historical figure stands right in front of Munna in the PRESENT!

It’s time for Munna to come face to face with none other than GANDHIji. How did that happen? And what would the outcome from hereon?

What happens when a ‘bhai’ meets a ‘reformer’? Will the sparks fly? Or will the combination of the two make things happen differently? Or create something new?

Meanwhile there are other interesting characters in this episode of Munna and Curcuit - Lucky Singh [Boman Irani], Victor D’Souza [Jimmy Shergill] and Simran [Dia Mirza]. Lucky Singh is a rich Punjabi builder who is fond of name, fame, family and money while for his daughter Simran values and right beliefs hold more prominence over money. On the other hand Victor is a young man who is trying to make it big and has lost heart in his endeavor to do after loosing the battle. It is only after Munna comes in his life that he starts afresh! Does he succeed?

Shantanu Moitra composes while Swanand Kirkire writes lyrics for this ‘dujee kahaani’ in the life of Munnabhai-Curcuit that unravels on September 1.

Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar - Have you ever said to yourself?
[Friday, July 28, 2006]

Pick up a bunch of men who have been married for more than 5 years and you may invariably find the majority saying - “Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar!” This may be in good humor but fact cannot be denied that every married man has a story to be told about himself and his married life. One such story is told in K.S Adhiyaman directed ‘Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar’ that stars Salman Khan and Shilpa Shetty in the lead.

Ayaan [Salman Khan] and Ahana [Shilpa Shetty] are two young people truly in love. With their young hearts beating for each other and love blooming in a big way, the next obvious step for them was to get married. With the film’s plot coming straight to the point, one wonders whether there was any opposition in their journey of love? No, there wasn’t any because unlike innumerous love stories that fail to culminate into a logical end, the love story of Ayaan and Ahana was progressing pretty smooth. Both were young, independent and above all financially secure. The only difference? Their upbringing and cultural differences! But none of these showed up in their courtship period, as love chose to keep such factors a distant away. Yes, they did resurface once the weeks flew by but more about that later!

Both Ayaan and Ahana had a lot to look forward to from the life that followed. Inspite of Ahana coming from an upper class family with a liberal approach towards a lifestyle, there was not much worry for Ayaan since he too had his upper middle class upbringing to make him understand the varied lifestyle. But did it prove to become too much and too hot to handle after the honeymoon period got over?

Once the sweet and saccharine period after marriage was through, realization stuck both with number of incidents that truly highlighted the difference in their upbringing and class. What followed from here were a series of sweet’n’sour moments that made Ayaan quip time and again - ‘Shaadi Karke Phans Gaya Yaar’. Instead of things taking an ugly turn, the point of contention mainly revolved around small nitty gritties of life. If Ahana wanted to wear short clothes due to her modeling background, Ayaan instead preferred her to go a little slow since she was married now and staying with his family. On the other hand Ahana had plans of shifting to their own home outside!

In spite of realizing that it wasn’t the most ideal outing for him and his wife, he chose to get things in place by trying to keep equilibrium between his family and his wife. While Ahana tended to put forth her demands, Ayaan’s cool’n'composed nature tried to keep things under control.

But all this for how long?

Would Ayaan’s patience wear out one fine day? Would he be able to strike the right balance between his personal life, his wife’s demands and expectations from his own family? Would Ahana realize one day that a little change and compromise could manage to bring peace and harmony in this small’n'happy family?

A film abound with comical moments, this family social produced by Bubby Kent with screenplay by Rumi Jaffery [who has written for number of David Dhawan films in the past] also stars Reema Lagu, Mohnish Behl, Asif Sheikh and Shakti Kapur. After being pushed for number of years now, SKPGY finally releases on August 04, a week before Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ arrives!

Ajay Devgan: “It was great of Saif to have cut his hair”

Ajay Devgan: “It was great of Saif to have cut his hair”
Thursday, July 27, 2006
“When you are doing one role then you are not thinking about anything else,” says man-with-a-brooding-intensity Ajay Devgan who is basking in the glory of a rib tickling ‘Golmaal’. And within a fortnight he is ready with the biggest release of the second half of 2006: ‘Omkara’ where he plays the title role of Shakespearean tragic hero Othello. Ajay has been associated with quality cinema with a dash of commercialization. Last year’s ‘Aparahan’ resulted in extremely positive reviews and did well at the cash window as well. Two time National Award winning actor gets into an exclusive video interview with IndiaGlitz at the eve of the release of ‘Omkara’. So, do check out the video in our Broadband section.

What is your character Omkara all about?

Omkara is based on Othello. He is an aggressive mafia don in UP and the story is how he falls in love. His own people try to harm him in a planned manner. This leads him to do something which is wrong.

Did you read Othello before starting work?

I haven’t read Othello in total. I’ve just read the synopsis. Its an adaptation with a simple line. The manner in which Vishal has adapted deserved my entire attention and concentration.

‘Golmaal’ is a comedy that released a few days ago and Omkara is a tragedy, so how difficult was it?

Golmaal had a different feel. When you are doing one role then you are not thinking about anything else. So, I don’t think it’s difficult.

Which one do you prefer Golmaal or a Omkara?

I do everything. I am happy that today Golmaal is doing well and is being appreciated. My work is being appreciated in the film as well. It is not as if I only want to do intense roles. I want to do every kind of role.

Something about Omkara that appealed to you

When you feel that the director is making a good film, when the production team is going in the right direction, co-stars are working hard, the atmosphere on the sets is pleasant then one feels like getting up in the morning and going to work.

How is Vishal Bharadwaj as a director?

When the director is clear, knows his job, is a good writer himself then the work becomes easier. It definitely helps the performance.

Something about the language used in ‘Omkara’ and the different kind of look in this movie

Language was a bit difficult for which we had to do a lot of rehearsals. As for the look I didn’t have much difficulty. I just had to raise the moustache and beard. Saif had a bit of a difficulty as he had to cut his hairs and everyone is wary of doing that. So, great of him for doing that.

Othello is an emotionally violent role, so how well you adapted yourself to it

You don’t think about yourself while playing a character, then you are thinking about the character and always think how character would behave in a given situation. So, you don’t compare yourself with the character…You just think about the character. And not about yourself.

How were the co-stars in ‘Omkara’?

When your co-stars are good, fine actors, are hard working with no egos….then it feels good.

You are considered to be a prankster, any experience that you’d like to share?

There was nothing of this sort on this set. We had fun and laughter while making but no pranks as such were played on each other.

What about the music of Omkara?

I like the music very much. All the songs are situational. It is out in the market and doing well. All the songs are working for me. My favourite is ‘O Saathi Re’.

Vishal has sung a song for the first time in ‘O Saathi Re’

I think Vishal has sung very well. He is definitely a very talented singer.

What is the meaning of the tag line ‘greatest evil is born out of greatest love’?

Because the greatest love causes the greatest insecurity and makes you do things which are not alright at times. So, it depends…Love can make a man go on the right path or completely on the wrong path.

Darwaza Bandh Rakho - Lest the visitors strike!

Darwaza Bandh Rakho - Lest the visitors strike!
[Tuesday, July 25, 2006]

Do you remember when as a kid whenever your parents went out; they never forget to remind you that ‘darwaza band rakho’? We are sure that the answer would be in affirmative. Probably the same may have been told to the central protagonist of the film but she didn’t take it too seriously! Result? She got kidnapped. So far, so predictable! But how if the very kidnappers forget to take the learning seriously? What if there own doors are not closed and their own kidnapping starts going awry? What follows from hereon is a series of incidents that would certainly keep the audience in splits in those 2 hours in the auditorium! Off course with the doors being closed!!!

Ram Gopal Verma, who has always believed in toying with different ideas with each of his flicks, returns after the failure of unintentionally comic ‘Darna Zaroori Hai’ with a genuinely created comedy ‘Darwaza Bandh Rakho’. Chakravarty, who acted as ‘Satya’ in the namesake movie and went on to make ‘Durga’ and an episode of ‘Darna Zaroori Hai’, is the film’s director that tells the story of a young girl and a gang of 4 kidnappers!

Isha [Isha Sharvani] was a young’n'bubbly girl born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Rich, carefree and ever so careless, she considered every moment of life as the one designed for fun, laughter and making merry. So much was one such moment important to her that even kidnapping held no seriousness in her life. For her even this was designed for one purpose - FUN! With her doors open, she was kidnapped by four young and not-so-young men who were amateurish in their attempt and even further amateurish when trying to deal with the events that unfolded. But before getting into their troubles, let us introduce to you their troublesome lives first!

Ajay [Aftab Shivadasani] was a simple man with not-so-simple plan, Inspite of his humble job as a waiter in a cafe, his aim in life was to own it one day. Well, his plans came to standstill as not just his dreams of owning the cafe were shattered, he even failed to hold on to his job as a waiter. And now he was out on the streets. Ditto for Raghu [Chunly Pandey], ever-so-flirtatious and not-so-debonair driver who had the dreams of the same scale as Ajay. Just like Ajay, he too played a long shot in the air. He just not wanted to own the ‘gaadi’! He wanted to even own the ‘gaadiwaali’ and make her his ‘gharwaali’. A split second later he was himself out on streets. Just like Ajay!

Third kidnapper in this gang was Goga [Snehal Dhabi]. With no similarity to Mogambo-ka-bhatija ‘Crime Master Gogo’ [Andaz Apna Apna], Goga was a straight man with straight dreams, unlike Ajay and Raghu. He was content being a ‘paanwaala’ but that too wasn’t destined for him as his shop came crashing down one day with municipality taking over the land where he had his shop set. He had a little dream now - to own a sweet shop. To top it all, he placed himself in the gang as the wisest of all. Where did this leave Abbas [Zakir Hussain] then? A man with a flair for breaking laws, he had nowhere to go after Bollywood suffered from a bad run. Abbas and Bollywood? What was the connection? Well, he was a black marketer who was jobless now since the time movies started flopping left, right and center!

Together Ajay, Raghu, Goga and Abbas thought that in order to achieve their small and big dreams they had to take the route of crime. And the first and (supposedly) easiest step in this direction was to kidnap someone for ransom. It was only later did they realize that this was going to be their toughest assignment ever!

They easily succeeded in kidnapping Isha but what followed from thereon was unprecedented to say the least. First and foremost they had to rush from the scene of crime and enter some other person’s place due to things going awry. To make matters worse, they realize that Isha’s father was no more in the country and it would take him some time to actually come back and handover the ransom. With no other choice than to take refuge in this house belonging to a “vegetarian family” headed by Shah [Ishrat Ali], the 4 kidnappers found themselves fighting one battle after another!

From now what they encountered was the trouble of these very own people in whose house they had taken shelter. While Shah was all smiling and humorous, his main problem lied with money. Why? Because once upon a time he was rich and now he wanted his money back. Staying with his wife, mother-in-law and his children, he had number of interesting stories of his own to tell. While his mother-in-law [Padma Rani] didn’t have a single word of appreciation for Shah, his wife [Smita Jayakar] still tried to keep the two in an orderly state and also take care of the household chores. Two kids Ponkey [Vijay Singh] and Sheeba [Tashu] too were ‘sone-pe-suhaga’ in this family because while the former thought that he was an expert when it came to lip-reading, Tashu had all her time spent in beautifying herself and making herself look million bucks!

Well, this crazy family was not just that the 4 kidnappers had to be content with. While Isha was enjoying herself with the state she was in, the 4 kidnappers had to deal with dozens of uninvited guests that barged into this house one after another. There was horde of such visitors who ranged from being good, bad to ugly. One such good visitor was a pretty female Julie [Manisha Koirala] who knocked on the door to sell a product. Well, she was a saleswoman after all! Though there was no choice for the kidnappers but do hold her hostage as well, soon love bloomed between Julie and one of them. Ditto for Aravind [Javed], who came with his financer father Sharat Shetty [Jeeva] to get their money back from Shah but instead ended up falling to the charms of Tashu!

To make matters further hilarious, there was another couple that made an entry into the proceedings - Chameli [Divya Dutta] and Ganapath [Ravi Kale]! While Chameli worked in the Shah house as a maid, her dream was to see Ganapath rise from the position of a constable to a police inspector. Her dream was alright but she wasn’t aware that inspite of a police tag, in actual life her husband was a weak soul who could hardly face a challenging situation.

Apart from the visitors as mentioned above, there were two more interesting characters that had an underworld connection……well almost. While Mushtaq Bhai [Raju Mawani] was indeed a gangster who dealt with extortions and kidnapping, there was a young pizza delivery boy [Nitin Raikwar] too ringing a bell who dreamt of making it big one day in the world of underworld. Will sparks fly when he and Mushtaq come face to face?

With a hilarious turn of events that unfolded after every 5 minutes with the sound of a doorbell, one can expect ‘Darwaza Bandh Rakho’ as yet another addition to the season of excellent comedies that Bollywood has been churning out with regular frequency. An original sounding plot, ‘Darwaza Bandh Rakho’ is first of the RGV ventures that sandwiches Karan Johar’s KANK from one end on August 4 with his Shiva coming a fortnight later on August 18!
