Sauda - The Deal - A dramatic quadrangular love story
[Tuesday, August 30, 2005]

Producer director Jai Prakash started made his directorial debut with ‘Saajan Ki Baahon Mein’ exactly a decade back in 1995. The movie starred Rishi Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Tabu and Sumeet Saigal and was unique in its own way as it was a quadrangular love story rather than a conventional love triangle. Taking cue from his debut venture, Jai Prakash comes up with yet another quadrangular love story, this time with an angle of sex and obsession thrown in and names it “Sauda - The Deal”. With an element of Hollywood blockbuster ‘Indecent Proposal’, Sauda has been shot in quick time and is due for release soon. Jai Prakash ropes in some of his regular actors like Aryan Vaid, Preeti Jhangiani and Suman Rangnathan with Sanjay Kapoor playing the chief protagonist whose DEAL changes the lives of everyone forever. Shakti Kapoor, Makrand Deshpandey, Sayaji Shinde and Ravi Kishan play supporting roles.

Sameer [Aryan Vaid] and Devika [Preeti Jhangiani] are married to each other. Inspite of their middle class setting, they are happy in their lives with immense love for each other. Both Sameer and Devika are professionals and while Devika is an upcoming painter, Sameer is a highly educated personality who feels he is not getting what he richly deserves. He dreams of going higher up the ladder and actively works towards pursuing his dreams. In each and every step of his, he is supported by his dutiful wife Devika.

Sameer also has the support of his loyal friend Monica [Suman Rangnathan] who belongs to the Page 3 variety and has the right contacts at the right places in Mumbai due to her modeling assignments that help her make in-roads into the lives of the high profile. She does have a soft corner for Sameer though and that’s because she has been in love with him for all these years, in fact since the college days. Though the marriage of Sameer with Devika made her adjust to the situation, she still hasn’t gotten over her feelings for Sameer. This is where the third angle in the silent love triangle sets in.

To make matters more complicated and interesting arrives Vijay Oberoi, a business tycoon, who flies from one place to another in choppers and believes in getting what he wants [now aren't all millionaires supposed to be of the same kinds?]. In one of his visits to a painting exhibition, he comes across Devika and this is where the seeds of lust, passion and obsession are sown. He wants to possess her at all cost, even if that’s momentary, and doesn’t hesitate in paying any price for that. Now this is where the fourth factor comes in that completes the love quadrangle.

What viewers get to see is a couple blissfully in love whose lives may just get disrupted due to two powerful individuals who have a fixation for them. The story moves on with Sameer trying to get a solid foothold professionally and in this endeavor of his, he is supported by Monica who promises to use her contacts to get him started. Since she has access to the rich and famous of Mumbai, she approaches Vijay Oberoi for the financial support to help Sameer out.

This is where the ’sauda’ happens ! A DEAL is offered - Sameer could get what all he wants but in the return Vijay wants Devika. Monica is obviously taken aback by this bizarre offer but soon feels elated at the very thought of hurting Devika . She sees this as the right opportunity to take revenge from Devika since she had got married to Sameer instead of her.

That’s the ’sauda’ that would effect everyone’s life!

Will Devika agree to the offer and get her husband’s dreams fulfilled and in return sell her body and soul? Will Sameer tolerate this deal to fulfill his ambitions by selling his love? Will all of Vijay Oberoi’s wealth help him satisfy his obsession? Will Monica’s revengeful act still get what she had always craved for i.e. Sameer’s love?

In the age of different movies been made on every passing week, it may not be surprising to see some unconventional twists and turns in this dramatic narration of the lives of four individuals, that may just boast of some unpredictable and nail biting moments.

Sauda is ready for release and may hit the marquee any time this September.

“I would be stupid if I place my film next to KANK” - Onir

“I would be stupid if I place my film next to KANK” - Onir
Wednesday, August 30, 2006
In the third and last edition of this 3-part interview, Joginder Tuteja catches up with Onir, director of ‘Bas Ek Pal’ to understand his comfort level with the film and how he is confused by the way critics function and arrive at ratings.

How confident do you feel about the film today?

Yes, I am quite confident that I have made good efforts to make film reach out to the world inspite of all its complexities! Though the film has been designed for multiplexes, it does have potential to go beyond them as well. What has also been positive is that wherever the film has been screened for trials, it has garnered good reactions. See, another aspect about making a film is if it is conveying any message.

Time and again people do ask me if my film comes with a message. My point is that every film has some or other message coming from it. Why search for a message or the lack of it from either sensible cinema or a so-called hardcore commercial product? I would say even a film like ‘Garam Masala’ has a message even if that is not explicitly stated. The film sends a message on how a man should talk to a woman!

This is why it amazes me when critics say that for a comedy or a hardcore masala film like XYZ, leave your brains at home. Why? Why can’t I apply my brain even when a comedy is on? What’s wrong in that?

Coming to the eventual release of the film, don’t you think that with inflow of number of movies this September, ‘Bas Ek Pal’ may get lost?

‘Bas Ek Pal’ comes on 15th September and I don’t see any other film releasing on the same day that belongs to a similar genre and is presented with the same treatment. Also my target audience is different from the films releasing during the same period.

If you look at it, the way film industry is growing today, at any point in time you would see some or the other film clashing with yours. That’s inevitable and one should just be confident of your own product. If you are not then you are dead as a film maker.

Yes, you shouldn’t be fool enough to gauge competition where there actually is. I would be stupid if I place my film next to KANK because regardless of merits or anything else, the worst part is that you won’t even get the right screens for your film to be shown!

In the hindsight ‘Wo Lamhe’ too releases around the same time and the titles ‘Woh Lamhe’ and ‘Bas Ek Pal’ indicate a story about moments. Will this confuse the audience?

I don’t see that happening. First and foremost what I believe is that ‘Woh Lamhe’ is coming 2 weeks after my film. Secondly both the films have set certain perceptions amongst the viewers who know that these two are different cinemas altogether. While actors in both the films are talented to say the least, they all have a different following amongst the viewers which should prevent any kind of confusion whatsoever.

Just recently one read that you were not too happy with the critics and the rating. Do you wish to elaborate?

Ya, let me talk about it and I will be specific too. Really I am confused about this entire rating business. What I perceive of reviews is that they guide people on whether to see the film or not. Now for a film like ‘My Brother Nikhil’ is doubly important for the reviews to state facts since one needs to understand the story the film is trying to tell.

A film dealing with homosexuality in such a sensitive manner was first of its kinds but so-called top critics went on ask why haven’t I actually given a depiction of how the lead protagonist in the film got AIDS? Did he get it through air or somewhere else? Now this is ridiculous because while telling a sensitive story like this one needs to account for number of factors.

The film has been accepted across the globe in a major way but it is surprising to see that in India it opened to good reviews at several places but the commercial success was quite limited. What further surprises me is when a film like ‘Golmaal’ gets a better rating that ‘My Brother Nikhil’. This shows that there is a problem somewhere!

Please continue..

Just because a film is made of over Rs. 20 crore budget doesn’t mean that you can classify it as a commercial venture and hence ignore any liberties taken. In contrast just because a small film like ‘My Brother Nikhil’ has taken a sensible approach, you want to dissect it from all corners and want to search realism from end to end hence pointing out the minor most deficiency at some place or another.

I can quote an example of ‘Ahista Ahista’ that just released. At some places the film has been given as low as 1/2 star rating whereas others have given it ***1/2. Am I confused? Yes truly!

Don’t you think that comments like these may go against you when the critics watch ‘Bas Ek Pal’?

I will be quite sad if something like that happens. This would just make me loose heart and then I may have to stop making the kind of films I believe in. I always tell everyone - “Go and watch my film and then comment how it is, whether it is good or bad!”

Anything else that you have to say before signing off?

Let me share something more with you here. While working on ‘Bas Ek Pal’ I realized that there was a huge excess baggage I was carrying from ‘My Brother Nikhil’. I realized there and then that I would die as a film maker if I did something stereotype in an attempt to recreate something similar.

See, ‘Bas Ek Pal’ is quite dark at the end of the day and for growing as a film maker I had to choose a different setup, different styling and overall a different treatment from ‘My Brother Nikhil’. I am growing as a filmmaker and I am willing to make mistakes, learn from them and rectify them in my next outing.

Yes, I am aware that some people are expecting yet another ‘My Brother Nikhil’ here but they may be disappointed. It is not a ‘My Brother Nikhil Part II’. That’s a conscious decision I have taken and if it is counted as a risk then indeed it is!

Utthaan - Success at what cost?

Cast: Priyanshu Chatterjee, Neha Dhupia, Saroj Khan, Shravan Kumar, Kumar Sanu, Preeti Puri, Anang Desai
Direction: Ujjwal Chatterjee
Production: Kumar Sanu

Utthaan - Success at what cost?
[Wednesday, August 30, 2006]

‘Utthaan’, which means rising, is a film set in contemporary times that narrates the tale of today’s youth that aims to reach at the top by any means without realizing what they loose in the bargain! A social, ‘Utthaan’ is a Kumar Sanu production and is directed by Ujjwal Chatterjee who had made his debut with a social/biographical as well, ‘Escape From Taliban’.

Corporate world, glamour, politics and media - pick any of these fields and chances are high that there would be enough examples of youngsters gone astray. Yes, there is a level of success that they gain but is it forever? Or is it something that would loose its sheen when reality strikes? Even if that doesn’t happen, does it allow one’s conscience to be in peace?

Look at the high society and corporate world! There is glamor’n'glitz abound but then what lies beneath? Fake principals, murdered ethics, lost esteem? There is money and luxury in abundance but then what can it buy? Happiness, peace of mind, a world full of harmony and peace?

Same holds good for politics where certain bad elements give it a dirty name! Some employ all means to make politics a business, some use to treat it as means to meet their own ends! What one may gain in the end is immense power, name, recognition and influence but one shudders to think about the losses in bargain!

What role does media have to play in such a scenario? A lot! But does media really take a neutral approach? Or does it become hands in glove with the world of glamour and politics? The same pen that should be exposing the darkest secrets sings praises about those who may be indulging in wrongdoings! But for what? To gain prominence in all important circles and use this power to make or break a personality or an institution!

With a powerful nexus of corporate world, glamour industry, politics and media, there is an ‘utthaan’ of an individual! But what happens to the ‘utthaan’ of the country? The same youth that could be the backbone of the country has instead worried more about its personal gains and benefits!

Would Prashant Bharati [Priyanshu Chatterjee] also turn out to be one of them?

A young man who had an ideology of his own and wanted to use the might of his standing in the media circles wanted to run an expose on those who were corrupting politics and media! He had the knowledge and the position to drive home a point because of his earlier stint as a student union President in his college days. Now after being affiliated with a media house, he just needed the right means to reach his goals!

He found his means in a career woman named Kiran Talreja [Neha Dhupia] who too came with strong ambitions. Just like Prashant wanted to be on the top in the world of media, Kiran too was an established model who wanted to scale the heights of success.

Two young people. Similar ambitions. A common goal.

And now they were willing to let go of all what they had learned in their younger days. Because for them the only means to ‘utthaan’ was to stop worrying about the implications and look at their final destination.

Prashant believed that Kiran could be the one who could help him reach gain the kind of success he was looking for! But does Kiran too have something similar in mind? Because soon comes a juncture in their lives when they forget all about ethics and principals and only worry about their own self.

Such self centered the two become that a relationship that promised to surpass friendship was now threatening to take their lives!

Is that an idea of ‘utthaan’ THEY had in mind? Is that an idea of ‘utthaan’ that YOU have in mind?

Also starring character actors like Preeti Puri, Anang Desai, Anjan Srivastava, Avtar Gill, Akhilendra Mishra and Vivek Shauq, ‘Utthaan’ is slated for a September 15 release.

With Luv… Searching for Success: Anupama Verma

With Luv… Searching for Success: Anupama Verma
Tuesday, August 29, 2006
Model turn actor, Anupama Verma, who is famous for her fragile looks and thin figure, hails from New Delhi. But now she is based in Mumbai. This glamorous girl is the discovery of the photographer Shantanu Sheorey, who tested her for his Digjam Advertisement when she was only doing her ninth standard, in that ad she modeled opposite to Shekhar Kapur. She made her debut with Jackie Shroff Productions maiden venture ”Grahan”, after that Anupama was seen in many movies like ”Ittefaq, Vadh, Kya Yehi Pyaar Hai, Pitah” etc. but the ”grahan” of failures was with her and because of that she didn”t manage to stay in contention to make real big name for her in the industry. So for the change she choose small screen and makes her debut with popular series ”Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi” where she played a spoilt rich brat ”Sheetal Ambuja” and get noticed for her acting, but her aim was Bollywood rather than telly-wood so she kept her fingers crossed and looked for some good roles in movies. As everyone knows today cinema is changing and nudity aka glamour characters play vital role as ladder of for one’’s success, keeping in mind the same Anupama has chosen the same track to taste the success and is ready with her forthcoming film ”With Luv… Tumhara”. In the movie she is playing the glamorous character of Neha.

”With Luv… Tumhara” is produced by Delhi’’s producer Rakesh Bhhatia under his banner Bhartiya Global Infomedia Ltd. (BGIL) and has been directed by Kamal D. Nathani. Starring Preeti Jhangiani, Anupama Verma, Pravin Dabas, Nakul Vaid, Pankaj Berry, Lalit Parashar, Manmeet Singh, Master Hardik, Sanjeev Tiwari and Sharad Saxena, ‘With Luv… Tumhara’ is a young girl’s dilemma in expressing her love & hiding the pain in her tumultuous life. The movie has music fine-tuned by Sudeep Banerjee. Recently she was spotted during the press meet of ”With Luv… Tumhara” at Mumbai, there we got the opportunity to talk her about her films and career, here are some fac

Tell us something about this film?

Directed by Kamal D. Nathani, ‘With Luv… Tumhara’ is produced by Rakesh Bhhatia under the banner of Bhartiya Global Infomedia Pvt. Ltd. which promises to be a startling departure from the clichéd boy-meets-girl and boy-loses-girl drama canned so routinely on celluloid. ‘With Luv… Tumhara’ generates a renewed conformation that selfless love can survive and thrive in a selfish world. The soft, romantic saga asserts that every promise made is meant to be fulfilled. And that includes untold promises, which too should be honored.

What kind of movie this is?

It’s a movie that emphasizes the need to give happiness to others. The main protagonists in this emotional opus share secrets and the essential conflict that they face help to shape a poignant love story that is unique & believable. Love stories boast of a double bonus: commercial potential entwined with emotional appeal. ‘With Luv … Tumhara’ is being touted as an artistic triumph with a storyline that’s certain to strike a chord within the collective consciousness of audiences.

What is your character in the movie?

I’m playing Neha, a bubbly vivacious character who has a spunky attitude and joie-de-vivre, which is likely to find favour with viewers. It is a glamorous character and I’ll be seen in completely newer look.

How was the experience of working with Preeti, Pravin & Nakul?

It was completely a joyful experience, all of them are good and during the shooting we become good friends, I enjoyed working with them.

We have heard that you are playing glamorous role, which is full of sin show, what do you say on it?

See, today the cinema is changing and viewers demands of glamour is on higher point, now the time has come and we have to change accordingly, many actress’ are doing sin show in various movies and getting popularity, so for the makeover I’m doing it as well, and I think there is nothing wrong in it, when it’s in the limitations but it’s worst when the line of limitation is being crossed. My father was a deputy chief of air-force and I would hate to do anything which would embarrass him.

You have worked on small screen tell something about it.

Yeah, I had gained good experience by working in some serials. I did some episodes in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, where the audience loved my character. After that I did ‘Rishton Ki Dorr’ & ‘Ek Ladki Anjani Si’ as well.

What about item numbers, would you like to do as you did it in Chameli?

I can’t do crude thunder thigh item numbers. The Chameli number was shot very classily and was good enough for me. In this film there is a song picturised on me and it’s being promoted as an item number.

What are the other projects you are working on?

Right now I’m concentrating on ‘With Luv… Tumhara’. After that there are some more projects and also doing some South Indian films. I have done MBA in marketing and finance from FMS, Delhi, and my ambition in life is to start an advertising company on her own.

“I Am Not Making a Home Video,” says Dharmesh Darshan

“I Am Not Making a Home Video,” says Dharmesh Darshan
Tuesday, August 29, 2006
He has seen colossal success with Aamir Khan’s ‘Raja Hindustani’ which earned the actor as well as its heroine Karishma Kapoor their Best actor and Best actress awards. He has also made musicals like ‘Dhadkan’ and ‘Bewafa’. With Akshay Khanna and Priyanka Chopra starrer ‘Aap Ki Khatir’ he has tried to break away from his brand of emotional potboilers. IndiaGlitz gets up-close-and-personal with director Dharmesh Darshan in an exclusive interview.

Akshay Khanna is known to be temperamental. Was it difficult working with him?

I didn’t encounter any temperament with him. And sometimes when an actor throws a temperament I don’t mind if it is a positive temperament because I understand that creative work over so many days in such odd climates and with remembering your lines, these things are natural. I didn’t have any crossing of bad temperament from Akshay Khanna or any other actor. It was a pleasure working with him.

You gave a different look to Karishma Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty and even Kareena….What different have you done with Priyanka Chopra?

Whenever I gave a look earlier it was not planned. I was one of the first directors who started it with ‘Raja Hindustani’. Today I feel this ‘look thing’ has become ad-nauseum. Everyone is with straight hair, chiffon sarees. So, deliberately I’ve changed it with ‘Aap Ki Khatir’. Glamour plays an important role. Priyanka is more casual. In a good pair of jeans, a good pair of glares with a good bag. It’s a more natural look.

You’ve worked with Nadeem-Shravan in several films…Now Himesh Reshammiya….How’s the transition been like?

Working with Nadeem-Shravan was a pleasure. And I hope to work with them again. Himesh was also a sheer pleasure. He is very talented. He is a classic example of someone who has worked very hard, deserves his success and the way he worked on ‘Aap Ki Khatir’, he knew my previous music record. It was relaxing for me because the man knew his responsibilities. I also wanted a new kind of music in ‘Aap Ki Khatir’. In ‘Raja Hindustani’ I had folk, while ‘Dhadkan’ and ‘Bewafa’ was more drawing room music. Here I wanted more hep music, something more contemporary. And still….’Tu Hai Kamaal’, ‘I Love You For What You Are’. At the same time I wanted the sweetness of an ‘Aap Ki Khatir’ or a Punjabi theka of ‘Meethi Meethi Batan Karke’…So, Himesh gave me everything. I am thankful to him. And not only him, I was ably supported by Sameer Ji.

Himesh is getting repetitive…But in ‘Aap Ki Khatir’ his melody sounds different….

O’ I am very engrossed in the music without taking away the credit from Himesh Ji who deserves the entire credit for ‘Aap Ki Khatir’. But I am not an absentee director at least in music. I take full participation in music. But this time I gave Himesh a lot of responsibility because he is very much into it, proving himself further. I told him I want your popular music but I also want music with shelf life.

Anupam Kher seems to be doing his thing in the film

I had done my debut film ‘Lootere’ with him. After that for a long period we didn’t work together. It was a sheer pleasure working with him. He plays the Punjabi Papa in the film as he himself says, his character talks 99% nonsense and 1% sense. He and Lilette Dubey are an asset for the film.

You have shot the film in London Winter….

When we shot ‘Aap Ki Khatir’ it was the coldest winter in London. It was snowing in March. It was minus 2 or 3 in the afternoon. Just imagine what it must be at night. But we went on….

Do you think Overseas Market makes a difference?

Yes I think it makes a difference. I am not a director who undermines the market requirements. If we have an NRI diaspora, an NRI market today, then respect it. Audience is supreme. I am the kind of director who if my audience is on planet Mars then I shall go to Mars. So, if they are in England and US, then I shall go to England and US without losing the Indian element. I am not the director who says audience doesn’t matter. I am not making a home video.

Raja Hindustani is one of the biggest hits of Indian Cinema…

It was traumatic. I would say because I made ‘Dhadkan’ after that and proved that I am not a fluky. But I just have to live with ‘Raja Hindustani’. What is the choice….Should I have not made ‘Raja Hindustani’. No, I am happy that I made ‘Raja Hindustani. When I made ‘Raja Hindustani’ I didn’t have any idea that it will write history at the Box Office. One can only try….

What after ‘Aap Ki Khatir’?

I am not a director who makes too many films but by God’s grace I’ve always had a choice of films. I like to wait…Where I have gone right….Where I have gone wrong…And use that experience for my next film.
