“Time of Indians being taxi drivers is over,” says Padam Kumar

“Time of Indians being taxi drivers is over,” says Padam Kumar
Friday, December 29, 2006
“The time of Indians being taxi drivers is over. We are the software guys today. So why not in cinema,” says Padam Kumar, COO-India of Roger Nair Productions, a company distributing Mani Rathnam’s ‘Guru’ thus making Canada as an official territory for Bollywood films. Check out his views on the future of Bollywood content overseas, how piracy will be clamped down and he also rubbished rumours that Mallika Sherawat won’t be attending the ‘Guru’ Premier due to Aishwarya’s insecurity:

How did Roger Nair Productions decide to come into Bollywood Distribution?

We at Roger Nair Productions have done a lot of events which are Indian based and Hollywood based. We have shifted our attention now to Bollywood content in Canada. Canada has always been a part of North America territory but we are trying to establish it as a major territory in itself. Not only because of ethnic Indians living there but there are also lots of native Canadian population which is also very kicked about Bollywood films. We are trying to give Indian films a mainstream release. And what better project than Mr Mani Rathnam’s film. He is a great maker with a lot of great sensibility. It’s an autobiographical kind of film which will be exciting for people to watch.

How did you strike a deal for Guru’s world premier in Canada?

Torronto is becoming a huge media centre in North America. After Cannes Film Festival everyone knows that Torronto Film Festival is the biggest. A lot of Hollywood productions happen in Canada. Around eighty to hundred productions a year. The Mayor of Torronto, the premier of Ontario, The Ontario Media Development Corporation, and Canadian Television and Film Commission are very charged about the Premier of ‘Guru’. This premier is being hosted by the city of Torronto. There’s a lot of a public support. We are doing it in an auditorium which not many people will be able to reach. It’s a 200 year old Victorian Opera House, one of the best auditoriums in the world. It’s a majestic place. It’s going to be a red carpet world premier on the lines of Hollywood films.

Films like ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’, ‘Omkara’, ‘Baabul’ and even ‘Umrao Jaan’ have done very well in the Overseas territory…

That’s why we got into the business you know (laughs). Overseas business is a bit undefined in Bollywood. There were a couple of distributors who were releasing films across the world. Now, Sony is here, Columbia is here. Now, the industry will come to know the kind of potential Bollywood holds abroad. The growth rate of the market is phenomenal. The interest shown by the native Canadians, Americans is amazing. Like ‘KANK’ was a huge success in Germany. Local Germans saw the film. Europe is becoming a huge market. Netherlands is a huge market for Bollywood content. We are in the business because we think there’s a lot of money in the business.

Was the star cast of ‘Guru’ a reason for getting associated with the film?

That’s why we want to do the world premier of the film. Ash is a very very Bollywood personality Overseas. Not only as a Bollywood actress, but she has been noticed in the English films. Even the mainstream audience has seen ‘Bride and Prejudice’. She is very very popular. Every native Americans I know says that she is the most beautiful woman in the world. She has got the buzz. Abhishek Bachchan…Everyone knows Amitabh Bachchan is the biggest star in India. And Abhishek Bachchan is his son. And he is big. Everyone knows when it’s a Mani Rathnam film, the product is gotta be very high quality. The presentation, the audio, the visual, A R Rahman…It’s an amalgamation of a team of actors and great technicians….Rajeev Menon is a brilliant photographer….Sreedhar is doing the sound whom I rate as one of the best in Asia. Then Mr Bobby Bedi is distributing the film. He has done ‘Bandit Queen’, ‘Fire’, ‘The Rising’…It’s a very interesting project to get into.

Who all are coming for the Premier?

Everyone yaar…All the cast and the crew. We want everyone to come. A lot of people have confirmed. A lot of people are working out their dates. Most probably we will have the whole cast of the film….

But there have been reports that Mallika Sherawat and Vidya Balan won’t be a part of the premier?

I don’t know from where they get it…You know our media…They need some news…Everyone is coming as far as I know. It’s an invitation that has gone from the people of Torronto. We are doing the paperwork for everyone to travel.

What kind of advance booking are you anticipating?

There’s a huge huge demand for the premier tickets. But it’s by invites only. The film is being spoken about. All the mainstream channels and newspapers are talking about ‘Guru’. You can hear to ‘Guru’ songs on CBC radio….It’s totally mainstream…

Have you seen the film? And what would you like to say to fans all over the world as to why they should watch Guru?

It’s a Mani Rathnam film. It’s a film which has got a lot of technical quality attached to it. It’s an emotional film. It has got a lot of moments which would make every NRI proud that this film has been made out of my country. The time of Indians being taxi drivers is over. We are the software guys today. So why not in cinema! If we are there in IT why not in cinema? When we can do source coding for Microsoft, we can do content programming for mainstream films….

How will you control piracy that eats into a major share overseas?

Piracy is going to be zero in Canada for ‘Guru’. The government, the police, the cultural ministry have clamped on it. We are going to be very very strict.

“I have had my share of twiddling my thumbs while sitting idle at home” - Ranvir Shorey

“I have had my share of twiddling my thumbs while sitting idle at home” - Ranvir Shorey
Tuesday, December 26, 2006
You laughed with him every time he came on screen, be it ‘Mixed Doubles’, ‘Pyaar Ke Side Effects’, ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’ or the sitcom ‘The Great Indian Comedy Show’. Now get set to see the different side of Ranvir Shorey as he changes tracks with ‘Traffic Signal’ and ‘Mithya.’

VJ, anchor, standup comedian and a movie actor! What do you personally feel you are best at?

[Smiles] I try to do my best in whatever job I do. Also, if you look at it, all these jobs are not very far from each other.

You are being diplomatic!

No, that’s not the case. In fact it has been quite comfortable doing all of this. My production and direction background also helps since not many know that I was also directing for TV before I became a VJ. Apart from all of this, I was also producing for Channel V. All this exposure helps.

It appears you have been working for long.

Yes, I have been! It has been 11-12 years since I started working at an age of 21.

Doesn’t it become hectic to manage so much on the platter?

I won’t say it becomes hectic. Moreover I have had my share of twiddling my thumbs while sitting idle at home. If I have to choose between the two, I prefer being busy [laughs].

You seem to be sharing a special bond with Rajat Kapoor after ‘Mixed Doubles’. One hears you are also working in his next, ‘Mithya’.

That’s right; he is the only guy at the moment who trusts me completely as a lead actor for his films. I know Rajat well and that helps me. He has a team that pushes me to deliver my best.

A title like ‘Mithya’ gives an impression of the film being somewhat deep?

I won’t say it is deep; it is a very dangerous word to use [laughs]. I would say it is a little dark. While ‘Mixed Doubles’ was lighter, ‘Mithya’ becomes a lot darker, more so in the second half. Also personally, I prefer darker movies.

Is that the criterion which makes you pick between art and commercial films?

I really don’t see my work as being art or commercial. Also that line has more or less diminished today. Knowing Rajat as a director, I know how he will present the subject and make it reachable to the audience.

Who else form the cast of this film?

It is a much bigger film that ‘Mixed Doubles’. In fact you could call it twice if it. There is Naseeruddin Shah, Neha Dhupia, Harsh Chhaya, Saurabh Shukla and Vinay Pathak.

That reminds one of your ‘jodi’ with Vinay Pathak. It seems to be undefeatable!

Ya, we both truly enjoying working with each other, be it theatre, TV, films or commercials. We have been good friends over the years, much before we became a pair on the television and films circuit. We both met at work and we also did some shows at Channel V. These shows gave the two of us an identity that we have nurtured over the years. I am so glad that we are together as we both share a healthy relationship with each other. As actors, we both understand how to play our characters without trying to eat into each other’s role.

“You will see a new Govinda,” says Govinda

“You will see a new Govinda,” says Govinda
Tuesday, December 19, 2006
Govinda is back and he is all over the place busy giving interviews for his forthcoming films ‘Bhagam Bhag’ and ‘Salaam-e-ishq’. The star of the masses is hoping for a turnaround after tumultuous last few years when his films flopped miserably, his political career was mired with controversies and he also became the favourite whipping boy of the media. It seems he has put everything behind and is ready to don the avatar of an actor everyone loves to watch on screen. Catch up with Raja Babu as he talks about a new Govinda in this exclusive interview. And yes, he likes his co-star Akshay Kumar’s ‘punctuality’. Talk about life coming full circle….Read on….

What are your hopes from your fans after a gap of five years?

I had taken a break from films. I’ve completed three films this year. The long gap that was there is going to end on December 22. I am looking for your best wishes. My whole family is looking forward to the release of this film.

Will we see the same kind of energy from Govinda?

I was worried about the same thing. When I saw the hardships of other people it brought more energy in my performance. You will see a new Govinda.

So, will we see the Govinda comedy returning again?

Hopefully. I am doing ‘Partner’ with David Dhawan where Salman Khan sahib is paired with me. Then ‘Bhagam Bhag’ is there. And then ‘Salaam-e-ishq’ by Nikhil Advani is there. So, all my films are with good people. And yes, you can never dissociate comedy with Govinda.

What is ‘Bhagam Bhag’ all about?

Both are innocent characters (Akshay and Govinda). They start running due to some reason and whoever associates with them keeps running as well. It’s a very entertaining film. I hope you all like it.

How was this year for you?

Positive towards work, health, dedication and I’ve tried to fulfill all the promises I made to the people in my constituency. I think I’ve been patient and patience results in correct results.

How important is promotions associated with a film?

These days promotions have become very important. It’s very good.

How was the experience of working with Priyadarshan?

Very good experience. This is the first time I’ve worked with him. His style of making cinema is very different, very natural. And my style was very different to his style. I learnt a lot and it helped me a lot. It has also helped me while working for other films.

How was Akshay Kumar as a co-star?

Very good. He is a very well behaved, very fine artiste, very punctual. He has all good qualities. And I think because of that he is doing well. Paresh ji, Rajpal Yadav, Lara Dutta all were very good.

What are your views about the music of the film?

‘Pyaar ka signal’ is doing well. But I feel all the songs of the film are very good. All the songs have meaning and they are not there for merely being there.

I See U - Watch out before you fall in love
[Monday, December 18, 2006]

Have you fallen in love? Yes indeed you must have!

The one you have loved could be fair or dark, tall or short, chirpy or serious, cute or stud, but then have you ever been someone who is just with you - LITERALLY? You must have wanted your better half to be there ‘for your eyes only’. But then what if that happens for real and you are the only one in this entire world who can actually see your love?

What would you do then?

Ask Raj Jaiswal who has found himself at such a juncture of life and is soon to fall in love with someone who is invisible to rest of the world around him. She demands all the attention from him since he is the only one who can see her!

Interesting, isn’t it? But let’s talk about Raj first!

He is a Casanova who is the star attraction of the TV show British Raj for India Shining TV channel where he is an anchor. His funds in the life is clear. Be courteous to women, be at your charming best, treat a woman deserves the way she deserves to be treated and in no time you would have her in your arms! He flirts, her excites, he seduces but he never falls in love.

Until….

It was just another of those nights when all that Raj wanted was to crash on his bed. He did find someone in his room that night. His only trouble? He was the only one for whom she existed. And now she wanted to be close to him.

She was Shivani Dutt [Vipasha], daughter of Mrs. Dutt [Kirron Kher].

But was she a scary ghost? Or was it a figment of Raj’s imagination? No, this wasn’t true. She was a wandering spirit whose body was in the twilight zone between life and death. The house where Raj lived belonged to Shivani and that’s the connection which brings her close to Raj.

But would all this turn out to be one haunted ghost story with eerie situations? Or would the tide be a little different in this case and a beautiful love story would develop between the two?

It had to be latter!

And now begins a sweet’n’saccharine love story that was never ever heard before and would never be told again!

In this love story of his, Raj had only a few close people whom he could trust. His best friend and co-worker Akshay [Chunky Pandey], his wife Kuljeet Kapoor [Sonali Kulkarni] who prided herself on being a friendly neighborhood wife beater or Dr. Patnaik [Boman Irani], a psychiatrist, for whom this was the most puzzling problem cases ever!

Raj sings, dances and hangs around with his sweetheart. But destiny has its own game to play as good times do not really promise to last forever. Shivani’s spirit may have been Raj but her comatose body was in the hospital in care of a doctor who wanted to unplug her life support forever.

Would Raj fight to not make this happen? And if so, how would he do that? What would be the reason that he would give to the medical authorities? And would they understand his point of view?

He tries his best. And when it doesn’t succeed, he breaks the law.

What would happen next?

Directed by debutant Vivek Agrawal, ‘I See You’ is a saccharine dipped romantic story that boasts of being the last release of 2006 as it arrives on 29th December all over.

Undertrial - Isn’t a man innocent till proven guilty?

Undertrial - Isn’t a man innocent till proven guilty?
[Monday, December 18, 2006]

Inspired from a true story that shook the world, ‘Undertrial’ is a shocking tale of crime, trial, verdict and punishment, all this and more even when the legal authorities have to still pronounce their verdict.

Sagar Hussain [Rajpal Yadav] was an ordinary middle class man. Coming from a humble background, he was Sameena’s [Monica Castellino] husband and a father. But life changed forever for him when he was accused of raping his daughters for as many as 8 years and conspiring to murder them. Was it the worst? No, because it had yet to come as even his wife stood up against him and wanted him to be punished.

But was he indeed a criminal here?

None knew but the trial by fire had already begun! Whether it was his fellow inmates, police authorities, media, people around him, just everyone pounced on the story and started believing the theory that he indeed was the man who had committed the heinous crime.

While the court was yet to try and prove him as guilty or innocent, his life was already in a deep mess. With no support around him and only hatred and ridicule welcoming him at every step, Sagar had turned into a nervous wreck.

He was lodged into the Central Jail as an ‘undertrial’ while his case was on. On one side there was Public Prosecutor P.P. Verma [Prem Chopra] who along with Sameena was readying the case to ensure that the minimum punishment he got was life imprisonment, on the other there was noted lawyer Ravi Vishnoi [Kader Khan] who had never lost a case in his life.

And above them was Justice Jaya Reddy [Pratima Kazmi] who was considered to be the toughest nut to crack when it came to court matters.

What would happen to Sagar? Will he be proved guilty? Or would it turn out that he was an innocent man after all? And if that was the case, why did his wife turn against him? Why were his daughters quite all this while?

Above all, even if he was let scot free, would his life be the same again ever? Will he be able to remove the scars that have hit his heart and soul over the period of times? Will he be a normal man again?

Produced by Nazim Rizvi, this Aziz Khan directed film has Anu Malik and Shamir Tandon composing while Sandip Nath and Sameer in charge of writing the songs. ‘Undertrial’ is all set for release on 29th December.
