Shreyas Talpade wouldn’t really pick up a gun and shoot - Shreyas Talpade

Shreyas Talpade wouldn’t really pick up a gun and shoot - Shreyas Talpade
Friday, September 28, 2007
Shreyas Talpade’’s DIL DOSTI ETC. releases today. He gets candid while talking about his film and the character of Sanjay Mishra that he plays.

What is the film ‘Dil Dosti Etc.’ about?

‘Dil Dosti Etc.’ is about these 5 character. Now I won’t say how their lives have been connected or anything like that but its about 5 different people with 5 different backgrounds. Its about the youth today each representing one segment and its about friendship, its about love, its about what happens today in college campuses and universities and things like that. You might might feel that I am getting too confusing with the story but its not like that. The story is pretty good and easy to understand; its more about the youth, their dreams, their aspirations, and what all they end up doing or do today to reach their goals.

What’s Sanjay Mishra, the character you play, like? What are his aspirations and values? Could you relate to him at any point because you were in college till very recently?

Honestly there was this character, which I had to portray, and I am not like Sanjay Mishra to a very large extent. But to a certain extent there are certain characteristics which I could relate with Sanjay Mishra. May be the kind of values he has in life or may be the kind of principles he thinks should be followed by everyone like respecting your elders and your parents. Things about commitment and being committed to one person or if you love someone you should be thoroughly committed to that person.

Please carry on..

See, Shreyas Talpade wouldn’t really pick up a gun and shoot some one which Sanjay Mishra would in fact do at any phase if he is not really convinced with the other person. He would listen to a person till a particular point but later if he feels that there is no point talking to that person, he would pick a gun and shoot. So there are certain things, which Sanjay Mishra would do and Shreyas in real life wouldn’t. These were certain things which I felt had some really interesting edge and the graph of that character also was pretty interesting.

How exactly?

He being a Bihari Brahman boy comes in from a small town to a big city like Delhi for future education. Then he gets into university politics, fals in love and then becomes friends with someone like a rich kid – Apurv. All these things I thing were what really attracted me towards Sanjay Mishra and doing the film eventually.

What’s the relationship you share with Imaad Shah and Nikita Ananad in the film?

Imaad plays my friend in the film. Actually he is a junior in the film and it all starts with me ragging all the juniors. Imaad is one of them and there is a special bonding that develops between two of us and this is how we become friends. Nikita plays my love interest in the film. She is one I end up liking and getting attracted towards and eventually falling in love with.

How was it working with Imaad?

Imaad reminded me a lot of Nasser ji because i had just done ‘Iqbal’ and then I started doing ‘Dil Dosti’. There were a lot of mannerisms that he has, or gestures, which are so much like Nasser ji. Also, the way he performs its completely natural. I mean not even for a moment do you feel that he is acting. He was pretty much himself on sets in front of the camera. I think that was his best part. You really don’t see too many actors doing that and there was a certain amount of confidence that he had in himself. He knew he could do that. There is a defnite way in which he has carried himself; just as the character demanded.

How about Nikita?

She is again a very hard working girl. It was a completely different equation because on one hand you have Imaad who is a bit laid back and subtle. Whereas Nikita was always charged up to do scenes in a different way, do some rehearsals etc. etc. But we had good fun. Eventually I think most of my scenes were with Nikita, Imaad and Dinesh.

So you developed a great rapport with all the actors?

Not only the actors but with the team as a whole because we were shooting in the month of May in Delhi. It was extremely hot and humid and we had to have some amount of fun on set otherwise it would get very boring. So we had good time in hand and we used to have our share of pranks and fun on set.

The film’s title contains ‘Dil’ and ‘Dosti’. So you fall in love by heart or by mind?

Sanjay Mishra will go with his heart. There are only a few things where he will follow his mind but otherwise most of the things he does is because he thinks that they are right and it goes with his ideology. For example, of he likes a girl he wants to get married to, there is no live in relationship funda with him. He is like, “ok, you like that girl, so should get married to her”. Its a very simple straight line with him. But its not the same with everybody else around. So that’s where the conflict is!”

“Shreyas and me got over our nervousness for kissing” - Nikita Anand

“Shreyas and me got over our nervousness for kissing” - Nikita Anand
Saturday, September 22, 2007
She is latest to join the unending list of beauty pageant winners who enter Bollywood. With her debut film, Dil Dosti Etc set for release soon, we caught up with Nikita Anand to know about her and her film.

Do you think being a Miss India there are greater expectations from you?

Expectations are always there from every actress who joins films. This trend of beauty pageant winners joining films started in 1994 when Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai joined the industry. They were followed by Lara and Priyanka and all have been successful so obviously there will be more expectations from me too. I am prepared for it.

You had a distinction in Science, yet you studied Fashion Designing. Later you went for the Miss India pageant and now you are joining films. Where are you actually heading?

Well, I have just done a film so obviously I am heading towards films. But I enjoy doing different things. Even during my childhood I was involved in a lot of different things like elocution, sports, singing, and drama.

You have anchored many sports based shows on television. Why sports?

I started with the American car-racing sports and had fun doing it. We belong to a cricket crazy nation so obviously when I got this opportunity to host cricket shows I immediately took it up. Also, I enjoy watching the game so anchoring it was more fun.

You have learnt Spanish on your own? How did that happen?

I have studied elocution and prose-poetry from the Trinity School of Speech and Drama. I had been to Panama for the Miss Universe pageant and my first introduction to Spanish happened there. I fell in love with this extremely sweet sounding language and therefore decided that I must learn it. A large number of world’s population speaks Spanish today.

But then why do you hate French?

I hate French because it is written in some way and spoken in a totally different way. (Laughs)

When you workout in the gym you end up intimidating a lot of men around you.

(Laughs) Yes I love working out. See it is a very rare thing that women go out to the gym and work out with heavy weights. When I do that, my trainer keeps telling me that some guys from the gym are not able to do as much as what I can and that they keep telling him how much they are embarrassed working out when I am around. (Laughs)

How did you ending up hitting it off so well on the Dil Dosti Etc sets with co-star Imaad Shah who is exactly the opposite in nature to you?

Imaad is an extremely reserved person. I have got a lot of scenes in the film with him so I had to put in an extra effort to open him up. It is important to strike the right rapport with your co-star because ultimately the scenes then turn out to be much better on screen. So I used to make sure that whenever he was around we would laugh or chat and joke around and eventually it all has reflected in our scenes on screen.

Why was Ishita Sharma, your other DDE co-star avoiding clicking pictures with you recently?

Ishita is a very sweet girl. I stand 5 feet 8 inches tall. She was avoiding doing that at the film’s music launch because of this big height difference between us. She admitted to me that she did it because I make her feel very short. (Laughs) We are good friends but whenever it came to having both of us standing in the same frame she would run away!

Shreyas Talpade got very nervous during the kissing scene with you in the film DDE.

Why just him it was me too who was got very nervous. (Laughs) Finally we just did it because we were acting and it was just for a scene. So we immediately got over our nervousness. Since it was a very small scene we wrapped it up quickly.

You are a trained singer too so do you aspire to sing your own songs in films?

Yes. If get a chance, I would definitely like to do it.

You had a short affair with Dino Morea. What went wrong?

I don’t know how these rumours of me and him being together began in the first place. I came to know about such a thing after I read it somewhere. (Laughs)

Breaking News - Would there be a return of true journalism?
[Friday, September 21, 2007]

Actual functioning of media has traditionally been looked with keen interest, especially by followers of alternate cinema. The farthest one can remember is Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Main Azaad Hoon’ that received intense critical acclaim. Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Page 3′ worked both critically and commercially while ‘Corporate’ too seems to be going on the same route. In between came Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani’ but an attempt to mix art and commerce didn’t really cut ice with many, though in retrospective the film seems to be have released way ahead of its times.

Now comes yet another film that aims at exposing the games played by media in their attempt to announce, plant or sometimes even manufacture ‘breaking news’. And this is where the film takes its title - BREAKING NEWS! While there has been a world where news breaks all by itself and arrives on your door steps, there is also a world where news has to be created in order to have it break in front of millions of viewers.

STING OPERATION is one such tool to facilitate that!

An operation that depends a lot on glamour, sensationalism and controversies.

Vidya [Koel Purie] is one such journalist who gets involved in a operation masterminded by her. But was it an easy living for her from hereon?

A committed professional, Vidya had just begun her career as a news correspondent and was satisfied with her stint with the entertainment world. But this was not what she was destined to do as some organizational reshuffling results in her shift to crime reporting.

Little was she aware that this shuffle would result in shuffling of her ethics, principals and even her life!

Starting as a novice, she soon learns the tricks of the trade and finds her way up on the ladder as she starts delivering one breaking news after another for her channel. With her confident boosting up due to her success, she starts getting better assignments to work on. With her morale at an all time high, she comes across a story that brings a complete shift in her attitude towards the world of journalism!

The story is about the plight of a girl called Sangeeta, who calls her up and narrates the trauma she was going through. Apparently numerous officials from the local police had been sexually abusing her for a long time and she had finally mustered courage to approach media for help. Excited and all charged up for this challenge, Vidya plans a sting operation to help the girl and arrives at the sight of the crime with her team.

Unfortunately the unexpected happens when instead of the SP [whom they had originally tried to nail down in the operation], the DIG arrives and actually rapes Sangeeta. As the entire episode is captured live on the camera, she and her cameraman Rafiq are distressed with the task that they had in hand since they couldn’t do anything to help the victim.

On the other hand they are also left with a bad taste in the mouth since officials at their news channel were happy with the footage they had in hand, which could further boost their TRPs. While Vidya warns the channel against using this footage and ensures Sangeeta that none of this would happen, the two women are shattered when the actually see the footage right in front of their eyes on the small screen.

After such a bitter experience, Vidya’s conscience left her with no other option than to resign from her current job and join her uncle’s press that still belonged to the old world where news was actually news! Her partners in her quest to bring to fore the REAL news were Rafuq, Bala (who himself was a crime correspondent in rival channel) and Trishna (who was her batch mate in journalism course).

Individually they may have had different point of opinions and way of functioning but as a team they had a common objective - provide justice to all and report the news in its true sense.

Vidya aims at providing Sangeeta justice but there are numerous hurdles in her way. Would she and her team be able to break all the barriers and bring back actual journalism in this new world?

Also starring Abhimanyu Singh, Swati Sen, Atul Parchure, Harsh Chhaya, Vinay Apte, Vandana Gupte, Virendra Saxena, Shishir Sharma, Nandita Puri, Tanushree, Anita Wahi, Dhananjay Mandrekar, Vijay Patwardhan and Rahul Vohra, ‘Breaking News’ is produced by Shreyas Mhaskar and directed by Vishal Inamdar. The film is ready and is slated for release soon.

Chhodon Naa Yaar - Chhodon Naa Yaar - The adventure begins
[Friday, September 21, 2007]

What happens when the road you tread turns out to be a road to nowhere? What happens when your biggest adventure turns into your biggest nightmare? What happens when you realize that you have met a road bock which is a point of no return?

Ravi [Jimmy Sheirgill], Shiv [Kabir Sadanand] and Sunny [Farid Amri] had a lot to answer but they had got themselves into a situation that they had themselves opted for. And wasn’t it one dangerous and scary situation?

Final year students of Mass Communication in Delhi University, Ravi, Shiv and Sunny wanted to do something different for their college project. While the world around them made documentaries on poverty, prostitution or politics, they decided to choose adventure as their subject.

Together, they decided to shoot a film in the Northern hills of India where a deadly myth prevailed. Unaware about the fact that this very myth could change their lives forever, they set out into the jungles in their endeavor of doing something different, exciting and to an extent dangerous.

There were people who discouraged them from taking such drastic steps. Amongst these were Ravi’s girlfriend Rashmi [Kim Sharma] and his professor Saxena [Ahmed Khan]. They had severe doubts about the practicality of choosing such a subject but the trio had different plans. Treating everything that came their way as a part of fun in their lives, they moved on to explore the world.

And now they would regret it forever!

That’s because no sooner did their adventure begin, they realized that they had committed the biggest mistake of their lives. The myth of the jungle started turning out to be true and now their own lives were endangered.

How would they come out of the situation? And would they live to tell the tale?

Produced by Sameer Gaikwad and directed by Dilip Sood, CHHODON NAA YAAR which releases on 21st September has Shyam Kaushal’s action as it’s highlight with Anand Raj Anand composing the film’s music.

Dil Dosti Etc - A Black Comedy
[Thursday, September 20, 2007]

If you have been through a college life, you would know that there are two things which interest one most (well, if one leaves studies aside) - giving your ‘dil’ away and getting into ‘dosti’ with your college mates. And then there is a little bit of ‘etc.’ too which adds spice to the life!

This is what director Manish Tiwary aspires to tell in his debut venture DIL DOSTI ETC. which deals with love and life of college going youngsters.

Sanjay Mishra [Shreyas Talpade] and Apurv [Imaad Shah] are two such youngsters who study in Delhi University. And yes, they are poles apart!

Apurv belongs to cosmopolitan Delhi, Sanjay hails from Bihar
Apurv is the son of Mr. Richie Rich, Sanjay belongs to middle class
Apurv is trying to find his bearings; Sanjay has his eyes set on a political career
Apurv has a prostitute and a school girl in his life, Sanjay has a hep aspiring model falling for him

The prostitute, school girl and model have their own stories to tell.

The prostitute Vaisali [Smriti Mishra] has never got emotionall attached to her countless customers. Would Apurv be the one?

School girl Kintu [Ishitta Sharrma] knows Apurv is flirting with her but she makes sure that she takes her own time before she takes a decision? Would she finally say yes?

Model Prerna [Nikita Anand] was paving her way into modeling circuits. Would she take a different road and instead walk with Sanjay?

Realistic cinema sprinkled with black comedy, DIL DOSTI ETC. comes with a basic thought - “When you are young, you believe, the possibilities are endless… “. And what could these possibilities be if things like love, betrayal, greed, friendship, voyeurism and sexual perversion come your way?

With a story and screenplay which promises to be as original as it gets, DIL DOSTI ETC. is touted as a film which tells a new tale differently by “not just showing the coming of age of only a young man but also explores the ambiguities and pre-occupations of an entire generation.”

Produced by Prakash Jha, DIL DOSTI ETC. has music by Siddharth-Suhas and Agnee and is releasing all over on 28th September.
