No Smoking - Dangerous
[Friday, October 26, 2007]

NO SMOKING is about K (John Abraham). Simply K. A 30 year old man who thinks of himself as quite smart and refuses to listen to anyone, big or small. Confident about himself and whatever he does, he is a chain smoker in the true sense. Catching hold of this habit from a very young age, he hasn’t looked back ever since.

His well wishers (read his wife and friends) have tried in vain to see to it that he lets go off this habit but all to no avail.

Will he finally manage to come out of this or will he only dig his own grave?

The man who could save him was Baba Bengali Sealdahwale [Paresh Rawal]. A simple looking man who could just be found at every nook and corner, he was autocratic and dictatorial but ensured guaranteed results. He has his own way of curing his patients. It’s in fact quite simple. They only have to follow all his orders. And if they don’t, he turns out to be their worst enemy.

Would K be next in line?

Well, K was not alone as he had a pretty wife in the form of Anjali [Ayesha Takia]. As a young woman who cared for her hubby in spite of his addiction to smoking, she herself was addicted to television soaps. K also had a pretty secretary for company, Honey [yet again played by Ayesha Takia].

Who was she? And in her, did K found an alternate to his wife?

Meanwhile K also had to contend with his friend Abbas Tyrewala [Ranvir Shorey] who himself was a cigarette addict once and had introduced smoking to K. What made him look for a solution? His love for his wife. And what made him cure his habit? Baba Bengali. This was the reason why he introduced K to Baba.

Will he manage to help his friend out?

An Anurag Kashyap film, NO SMOKING is, as per the film maker himself, a bizarre piece of cinema. With music by Vishal Bhardwaj and Kumar Mangat as the producer, NO SMOKING releases all over today.

As actors they are two completely different people - Imtiaz Ali

As actors they are two completely different people - Imtiaz Ali
[Interview by Nkut News Bureau]
Wednesday, October 24, 2007

What made you decide to make Jab We Met after Socha Na Tha?

The script really worked for me. It’s a very contemporary film. I’m very fascinated by the romanticism inherent in our lives and I have tried to depict that in Jab We Met.

Tell us a few lines about the film

Jab We Met is a film about two strangers, completely opposite each other in terms of temperament, behavior and how they are thrown towards each other in different situations that take them to various places! It is a beautiful story about life, travel, very young and fresh and a magical journey of two extremely different people who meet while traveling and how their life unfolds.

What made you sign Shahid and Kareena Kapoor for the film?

Well, since the film is about how two strangers meet and fall in love in the due course of travel I felt Shahid-Kareena were perfect to depict the situations. They are very steady and the bond looks evolved. They are well adjusted to each other. You can say mine is probably the first romantic film with Shahid and Kareena together.

How did you enter in the film industry?

I hail from Jamshedpur and while in college in Delhi I became quite involved in theatre. I came to Mumbai and directed quite a few television shows before bagging the offer for my debut film!

Jab We Met has been shot in many different places in India…how was the experience?

I love traveling and Jab We Met really helped me fulfill my desire to go to places. We visited places all over India such as Nabha, Punjab, Manali, Rajasthan, Mandava, Rohtang Pass, Khandala, Bhatinda and so many others! From sub-zero temperature places like Rohtang Pass to extremely hot places like Rajasthan each place was a fabulous experience! The film is an adventure covering some of the most beautiful places in India.

A note on the music of the film.

Oh I think Pritam has done a fantastic job with the music of the film. It’s very fresh and songs like Mauja Mauja, Yeh Ishq Hai are topping the charts as well. People really like the album all over India and abroad. It’s very important for the music to co-relate and enhance the film’s situations and I think Pritam has done that.

How was it working with Shahid and Kareena?

As actors they are two completely different people. I never used the same style of explanation for both of them. Shahid likes detailed explanation with all information before itself. Kareena is impulsively and she doesn’t need an extra word at all. It was fabulous to see both working together and unlike reports neither Kareena nor Shahid have any hang-ups at all. In fact Kareena threw no tantrums nothing and was very chilled out.

Any memorable experiences while shooting for the film?

We traveled to so many places in India, exotic far off places that each place had its own memories attached! We shot with Saroj Khan with around 150 dancers from Tibet and Himachal Pradesh, almost got bitten by fierce dogs in Punjab, I stayed at a scary haveli in Rajasthan for 20 days…all fabulous memories.

Future Projects.

Well, none right now but lets see if any interesting story comes up who knows!

Jab We Met - Kya hoga, socha na tha!
[Tuesday, October 23, 2007]

Aditya (Shahid Kapur), a defeated industrialist, is even more broken as the girl he loves is getting married. Unable to muster up the courage to return home, he drifts out of the gathering and aimlessly boards a train, bounding away into the night.

As destiny would have it, on the train he meets Geet (Kareena Kapoor) – a beautiful but annoyingly talkative girl who is leaving Mumbai to go her hometown – Bhatinda (Punjab). Later, she has plans of eloping with her boyfriend.

Geet irritates Aditya to the point of getting him to leave the train. As she tries to get him back on the train, she ends up missing it and the two find themselves stranded on a desolate station with no luggage or money.

Begins the idyllic journey through the exuberant North Indian heartland in which this odd couple will make their way through buses and taxis and camel-carts, crossing Highways and deserts and lakes, meeting all kinds of people, to reach her house in Punjab …….

On arrival, Geet’s family mistakes the two for lovers. Before this misconception can be cleared, Geet escapes to her boyfriend in Manali. Aditya leaves with her, confirming the suspicion that they are lovers. In Manali, Aditya feels empowered to return to Mumbai and resurrect his ailing business.

Life takes a positive turn and Aditya begins to do well. One day Geet’s family who think that she is with him confronts Aditya. He is shocked to learn that Geet has not returned home. He takes it upon himself to find her. He finally tracks her down in a Himalayan town and begins another journey to reach Bhatinda and flow into the colors and conceptions of a loud and happy North Indian family!

How their separate journeys become one, forms the destination of JAB WE MET, a beautiful and captivating saga of made-for-each-other love. Lilting, musical, amusing and packed with mischievous contrivances – this breezy fun-filled romantic comedy set in cultural North India looks like it’s ready to recreate the magical era of the 90s, in the form of Aditya and Geet, being essayed by Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor.

Directed by Imtiaz Ali of SOCHA NA THA fame, JAB WE MET with hit music by Pritam promises to be a breezy entertainer and releases worldwide this Friday.

“Script/promos and not a break up would affect JAB WE MET” - Shahid Kapoor

“Script/promos and not a break up would affect JAB WE MET” - Shahid Kapoor
Tuesday, October 23, 2007
Even as Shahid Kapoor’’s split with three-year-old girlfriend Kareena Kapoor are doing the rounds fast and furiously, Imtiaz Ali’’s romantic comedy, Jab We Met, their first romantic film together, is definitely B-town’’s most talked about film.Looking dapper togged up in a printed shirt and cargo pants, he is all smiles as he greets you. If Shahid Kapoor is in pain about his break-up, the actor is not showing it. Instead he is all charged up about the film, which is carrying splendid reports.

Don’t you think Jab We Met is a very unique title for a Hindi film?

Isn’t it cute? Actually it was my dad’s (noted character actor Pankaj Kapoor) idea to have a Hindi-English title so that both, the multiplex audiences, and people in smaller towns could connect with the film. So together we both did some intense brainstorming, and he hit upon Jab We Met ! There were two other options but Jab We Met won hands down by a public vote!

Kareena Kapoor and you have worked in three other films together before this. This is your fourth one together. What expectations do you have from Jab We Met from?

Yes, we did Fida, 36 China Town and Chup Chup Ke, but all three were of a different genre with the focus being on other aspects than romance. I guess the audiences expected more of us together, which they will see for the first time in Jab We Met which is an out and out romantic film! I am very excited about the film and confident it will do wonders at the box-office! It’s one of my best films till date and one I’m immensely proud of!

Is it not ironical that your most romantic film is releasing at a time when so much is being said about your split with Kareena?

A lot has been written about Kareena and me on this issue which has caused distress to my family and to me. Frankly this is something I would not like to comment on!

There were reports that all this is being done for the film’s publicity….

Only the script and how the promos are presented affect a film’s box-office. Nothing else matters!

Judging from the promos of the film you appear to be a sober character while Kareena seems loud and garrulous……

Yup, we are two very contrasting characters in the film! Kareena plays Geet, an amazing girl from Bhatinda, Punjab, who talks non-stop, the kind who can even make a conversation with a lamp post if given a chance! I play Aditya, an industrialist trying to cope up with broken affair. We are thrown into each other’s company when both of us miss a train and are left standing on a desolate railway platform! Our journey from there as we try to make it to our destinations results in a unique relationship which goes much beyond love, is the crux of the story!

How adeptly according to you, has Imtiaz Ali presented this love story?

When Imtiaz approached me for the film we struck a chord instantly! I found we both shared similar views on how films should be made, that is they should be a balance between commercial and good cinema with ingredients from both the genres in good proportions. Imtiaz is a new-age director. I loved his Socha Na Tha and his racy style of filmmaking which is visible in Jab We Met also! The other remarkable thing about Imtiaz is his ability to listen to people. He always lends a patient ear to every person’s opinion calmly, and then inculcates any idea he likes in his project!

What according to you is the unique selling point of the film?

The fact that the love story which starts at a railway platform in Mumbai and meanders through various places to Bhatinda is actually shot in all these locations. No make-believe sets or locales, everything is authentic ! I still remember the magnificent haveli we shot in at Nabha (Near Bhatinda) and how we used to travel five hours to and fro every day! It’s a film that will appeal to every age group. That’s the beauty of doing a romantic comedy.

The music of the film is already making waves on the charts around the world ……

Yes…Pritam has given an outstanding track with some catchy and foot tapping remixes of songs like Mauja Hi Mauja and Tum Se Hi for different segments of the audiences. Personally, these two are my favourites. One is so lively, the other Tum…a slow romantic ! Both are picturised on Kareena and me.

Any scenes from the film which are memorable for you?

There is this pre-climax scene in the film between Kareena and me, which dwells on some eye-opening facts about life. It is very poignant and touching.

What else are you looking forward to?

There is Aziz Mirza’s Lucky Charms a musical romantic with Vidya Balan and Nagesh Kukunoor’s Tasveer, a thriller! Something interesting is also coming up with Raj Kumar Santoshi. But as of now it is only Jab We Met! (Laughs)

Speed - A roller coaster ride
[Friday, October 19, 2007]

SPEED - Now don’t get confused with the namesake ’speedy’ thriller which released around a decade back and was a huge success worldwide. Instead, SPEED is inspired from another Hollywood hit, CELLULAR, which too was a racy thriller that kept it’s audience at the edge of the seats.

The basic plot of SPEED is simple though the situations that the protagonists go through are quite complex to say the least. The central character in the film is Urmila who only has one device which could help her survive from her kidnappers - her cell phone!

But first of all how and why has she been kidnapped? Well, she is the wife of an undercover MI5 agent (Sanjay Suri) who has to follow certain instructions as dictated by criminals in tow Aftab Shivdasani and Sophie Chaudhary. In an attempt to use Sanjay Suri to aid the assassination of India’s Prime Minster, they put pressure on him by first kidnapping his wife and later his kid.

In some other part of the city, London, where all the action is taking place, is a happy-go-lucky character Zayed Khan who is busy wooing his girlfriend Tanushree Dutta. But in the midst of all this ‘masti’ and ‘maza’ he gets a call.

A call which he would have never anticipated.
A call for which he had to immediately find a solution.
A call which may result in him loosing his girlfriend forever.

Still, he chooses this call over everything else. He does that because on the other side of the call is Urmila for whom he is her final hope….and the last call. Because if the call disconnects, she is not in a position to make another call! This is her last and final chance of survival and she has to hold on to it.

Now what Zayed has to do is follow instructions of a total stranger, give back some instructions and last but definitely not the least, act as her only moral support. He has to make sure that the call doesn’t disconnect, the assassins do not make their move, he doesn’t come in the way of the criminals and Urmila is safe from their clutches.

Meanwhile London cops too get a hint of something going fishy during the PM’s visit and go all out to make sure that they get their best men on duty. One such man is Ashish Chaudhary who leaves aside his personal obligations and makes sure that he is up there for the call of the duty!

Zayed has to save Urmila
Ashish has to save the PM
Sanjay has to ensure that the assassins’ plans are foiled
Aftab and Sophie have to ensure that their plans materialize at whatever cost

And all of this promises to happen at a ’speed’ which is sure to take you through a roller coaster ride which begins tomorrow i.e. 19th October!
