What is you favourite track from the film?

It’s hard to say because all the songs have their own charm whether it’s the song in New York or it’s the song where I am performing on stage after I come first time to India. Bulbul I think is very peppy and Indian but there is so many layers to that song because the whole story is told in that song. There is “Oh Re Piya” which is a very slow number.

What was the experience like working with Salim Suleman?

I think Salim Suleman they both are a very talented because this story needed them to have a range of different kind of music because it starts in New York it comes to India. Then there is a very rustic kind of a number which is Bulbul and there is also a slow song in the movie which is very melodious there is a western number and so they had to be very flexible and they had to have that kind of range and they do. They have done justice to every song.

Can you tell us something about the character you play in this film.

The character I play is Diya who is extremely strong she is very independent and she has to leave her village, she actually elopes with someone she falls in love with and she try’s to make a life for herself in New York where she realizes that the person she ran away with is not the same, somewhere she realizes that this not what she had come for, she has a child. She is a choreographer who makes a life for herself out there she works like exactly what her guru was to her and she is to the others and then when she has to come back her whole journey when she comes back to her town where people don’t like her anymore and how she tries to save something that is very close to her heart, something that she believes in and how she stands by it and how she see’s the whole mission thru is what the movie is about. So I see her as a very intelligent and a very strong person who doesn’t sit and cry about her problems but instead takes everything bang on and says lets go ahead from here. She is a very positive person who always looks forward to life and she believes in the spirit of people, she believes that goodness exist and everybody has a good side and something good comes out of it.

What was it about the script that made you decide on doing this film?

First of all I think it’s a story of believing in something and standing by it and Its a very feel good kind of a movie, it’s a very positive movie and also that its very relevant in today’s times where you see western culture taking over everywhere else and our own roots are kind of fading away like theater especially is kind of a dying art today and something needs to be done to revive it. So I think it’s like basically going back to your values, your roots and back to your culture and I think that’s very relevant today.

Can you tell something about how this offer came to you and what made you decide to do this film.

It all started with my performance at Filmfare and that’s where Yashji saw me and said that would you be interested in working again. It was just a conversation like that I never thought about it seriously and then I happened to meet Aditya Chopra when I had come to see the studios and we just got talking and I think that’s when something clicked in Adi’s head and he had some subject with him for a long time that’s what I came to know later because they didn’t tell me anything then. After which I left for Denver then my secretary Rikkuji got in touch with me saying they have a subject for me and then I just kind of had an idea of it and I quite liked the gist of what he had given and then told me that he would send me he script then Adi came over to Denver just to tell me what he had in mind and I thought it to be a very good subject, its also very relevant to where I am right now and also I have worked with Yashji before in “Dil to Pagal Hai” and I knew they are extremely professional and when say they will be complete a film in four months they will do and also I have very high regards for Yashji and I know that whatever product they make they make sure they do a good job of it so I had that confidence in them as a filmmaker also and as people, They have also worked with married artist so there was a kind of a comfort for me to work with them so there were many such factors that went into deciding for me to love to do this film.

How different is it working with YRF after 10yeras now?

Yash Raj Films has always been very organized even 10 years back but now I would say they are super organized, they are like 10 steps ahead of what they were and it’s always a delight to work with them again. Its funny I always wanted to work with Anil Mehta before but in a different capacity, I wanted him as a cameraman for one of my projects and it didn’t happen at that time so I think god had different plans then in his mind. It’s been a wonderful experience. When I did Dil To Pagal Hai I had a lovely time working with them and even today Yashji has kept his standards and also built this beautiful studio. It’s been a beautiful experience working with them

Was making a comeback a difficult decision.

Well yes one is scared when you making a comeback because everything you do, you want it to be the best, because there is a lot of speculation on what subject should be, what kind of role Madhuri should do and you there is a lot of expectation also there is a lot of genuine happiness from different people I have met and that they are genuinely happy to see me do a movie after a long time so there is a lot of expectation that rest on the shoulders and that kind of can weigh you down sometimes, whether this will be a right kind of a move and Whether people will like me in this kind of a role and stuff like that but when we were working it was such a beautiful experience through out that I had to keep my fingers crossed that people like the movie. Yes it’s always a difficult decision to work again after a long time also because I have two kids now its not just my responsibility towards my film its also the babies now. There was always an apprehension about how they will adjust to Bombay because they have never lived here for along stretch of time so in that sense it was a little scary to come here and shoot and hope they enjoy but they really had fun. My older son has started speaking in Hindi, singing Hindi songs. Out there we are not in touch with Hindi films but here they watched a few movies and they are getting use to the filmy clout.

What was it like working with Anil Mehta?

It’s been wonderful, I used to always think I am the only patient person in the world and that I am very mellow but When I worked with Anil Mehta I realized there is another person who is much more patient than I am much calmer then I am and that has helped me a lot because he’s always been very patient even if we are shooing in the sun or the worst weather in whatever situation we are he has always been calm he has been a pillar to all actors and since I wanted to do a film with him before It was wonderful to work with him finally and I am glad that I worked with him in this capacity as a director because he understands performances and he is also a big help when you perform, he knows exactly what he wants, what the shot is going to be and he never hesitated to tell me that lets take it a little higher or lower also he is very flexible that if I wanted to do something he would let me go ahead and do it, He has not been rigid that he wants it only in a particular way but he understands performance and that’s been the biggest help in this film.

What was the experience like working with Vaibhavi Merchant?

I think with Vaibhavi its been a challenge for her as well because I have worked with different choreographers like Saroj Khan,Chinni Prakash,Prabhudeva and so many other people and they have always been like Madhuri Dixit dances and she has to compete with all the background that I have had and yet make it look little different that its her style, it’s a different choreographer who is giving me the dance steps and also she had a wide range in this movie from Western dancing to Indian to Rustic. I must say that she has come off with flying colours and has done a very good job in all the songs and I enjoyed working with her. She is very bright and quick.

Can you tell us a little about your look in the film.

The look is different because I am playing the woman who has spent like a good 10 years abroad and she has made a place for herself there, she is a choreographer and her whole attitude is that it is a man’s world kind of a thing. She’s not very feminine or delicate so she has to look her part through out the movie where as when she is dancing or when she is doing nothing she fits into a different role all together so I think that was the biggest challenge for Manish for it to look constantly like that she’s not a frail or a delicate women and that she’s out there, tough and to give that look without being over the top and keeping a balance so its like a mixture of everything and that had to be brought across throughout the movie and we have successfully managed to do that.

Can you tell us about the sets that was created for this film.

It was small town created called Shamali right there in film city and at the end of Shamli was the theater Ajanta, which is the pillar of the story everything revolves around it and they have done it so beautifully it was very refreshing to go there and see one storey houses like you have in small towns which was very pleasantly made, the little gallis that you miss out on these days, little shops lining the gallis and the changes that happen once I leave Shamli and come back after 10 years, all the changes that have happen in 10 years suddenly the little town looks very different because it’s got these jazzy looking things happening there like new mobile shops etc,I think they did a brilliant job with that we were so comfortable in that village that it became a part of our life’s in those 4 months and everybody kind of got attached to it.

How do you prioritize your personal and professional life?

I have my priorities right my kids are my first concern even when I was working I made sure they were comfortable so I don’t have to worry about anything once I go on the sets.Yashji was very sweet he made a play area incase they incase they come on sets they can go and play while I am shooting their grandparents are here my mother in-law came in and supported for sometime she came and stayed here with them so that they are kind of well settled so everybody has been so supportive my husband came twice to be with the kids for a good 10-15 days because I had all this support around me it became possible for me to shoot without any tension on my head and I think my kids enjoyed themselves getting pampered meeting my cousins who have kids their age, they are socializing watching movies and having fun. Its been great for them as well they have opened up, broadened their horizons and learnt different languages

“I have no qualms in doing bold scenes” - Nandana Sen

“I have no qualms in doing bold scenes” - Nandana Sen
Friday, November 16, 2007
After debuting in GUDIA around a decade back, Nandana Sen returned with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’’s BLACK in a supporting role of Rani Mukherjee’’s sister. Later she was also seen in TANGO CHARLIE, MY WIFE”S MURDER and MARIGOLD and would soon be appearing in STRANGERS opposite Jimmy Sheirgill. Over to Nandana.

Tell us something about “Strangers”.

“Strangers’ is a beautiful but strange movie. The story is about two strangers who meet; about two people falling in love in a strange land. It has lot of complexity, it has suspense, it’s a thriller but not a complete thriller, and it’s a combination of different genre. Above all it’s a deeply emotional film.

What character you are playing in “Strangers”?

I am playing a character called Priety who is from London; she is looking for love. She is very successful, passionate and a royal girl, who falls deeply in love. There are certain ups and downs in her relationship. The character is very much real. Actually you can’t categorize her; she has elements of different personality traits. She is consistent, somewhere she is really tough to handle, sometimes she is beautiful. In short Priety is confident, carefree, successful and sarcastic character; she is not a typical doll like character. There is enough warmth in the character.

Heard that you have done a very bold scene in “Strangers”? Were you comfortable doing it?

I have no qualms in doing bold scenes if it’s a requirement and the character and script defines the relevance. At the end I am an actor.

How original this film is?

It’s an extraordinary script. Whenever I choose a film I always look at how original the script is. Though everyone would feel it is ‘Strangers on a train’, it is far from it. It is different in the real sense of the word. Though in a way, it’s a tribute to “Strangers in the Train” as the story takes off in the train. STRANGERS is different as chalk is to cheese in the overall concept.

How was it acting with Jimmy Shergil and Kay Kay for the first time?

It was a wonderful experience working with them. Jimmy is a great guy, sharing screen with him was great and it was very easy to work with him. He has a given a wonderful performance in the film. Kay Kay is a wonderful, disciplined actor and a very nice guy. Kay Kay is extremely talented. I adore Jimmy because he is really sweet; he is very friendly and generous. One thing I have noticed about Jimmy that is he is a great singer, he sings beautifully.

How was your experience working with debutant director Anand L Rai?

Anand L Rai is a fantastic director and a great guy and has given me the chance to do improvisation in my character. He is very talented, sensitive, emotional and a nice man. He has a generous vision of world and human nature. On one hand he is great director and the other hand he has a great vision of cinema. He has done many television serials so he is very comfortable with actors. Before the film Anand was a stranger to me and now that I have done the film he has become a family to me.

What is the music of the film like?

Music of the film is melodious. Sometimes music can be obstacle if it is not used in the right manner but the music of our films play a critical part. Music of “Strangers” evokes emotions.

Have you planned a strategy for your career?

I don’t have a specific strategy about my career that I have to do ‘this’ film or ‘that’ film. I just go by what seems interesting. I enjoy every bit of the film I do. My only strategy is not to get typecast. For me it is important to do a different type of a movie every time. This will help me to learn more things as an actor. I don’t think about the film; I always go by my gut feelings.

Besides “Strangers” what are the other projects you are working on?

Besides “Strangers” I have “Forest” and right now I am doing “Colours Of Passion”; it’s a film based on the love story of painter Raja Ravi Sharma. I am playing the character of Shantabai. It’s a historical character where I may be looked upon as Shakuntala, Sita, Laxmi and Draupadi. I have done many research on the film, read books on his paintings “Forest” is an international film, it’s a love triangle where I am playing a character called “Radha” who is a very tough girl. It was great playing that role. It’s a story of one night stand in the forest.

Favorite pass time?

I love to read and write poems. I write a lot. I also love to listen to Rabindra sangeet i.e. Tagore’s songs. I also love listening to old Hindi film songs and jazz music. I love collecting old Hindi film CDs. I do yoga three times in a week. I love dancing so I have learnt Ballet, Manipuri dance and modern dancing.

Finally how would you define “Strangers” in one line?

If I would have to describe the film in one line, I would say “Strangers” beautifully walks in between the good and the bad lines

Apna Asmaan - Success, but at what cost?

Apna Asmaan - Success, but at what cost?
[Saturday, November 10, 2007]

They say if one has to achieve a height, aim for the skies. Howsoever difficult it may seem, howsoever far it may be and howsoever impossible it may sound, always have a piece of sky for yourself. Something which you could call - APNA ASMAAN.

Budhhi [Dhruv P. Panjuani] was also staring at this sky. Actually not him, but his parents were. And which parents wouldn’t? After all like every other normal couple, even Ravi [Irrfan Khan] and Padmini [Shobana] too wanted only the best for their teenage son. The only difference being that their son wasn’t normal.

He was special.

He had neuro problems and was mildly autistic. Not able to study and learn things the way children of his age could do, he picked up things at his own pace. So much so that it lead his mother to frustration even his father always believed that one day things would turn out to be all fine and he would be able to live a normal life.

But deep inside, he also carried the guilt of being responsible for his son’s mental state [in spite of not being responsible for it, as confirmed by all the doctors]. It so happened that when Buddhi was a little child, he was accidentally dropped by Ravi. And now Ravi carried this burden with him forever.

Kamini was not the one to take things lying down and only wait for a miracle to treat her son to normalcy. A gold medalist in Mathematics, she wanted her son also to be excellent in studies and couldn’t tolerate it when he scored less marks in his school subjects. His flair for art didn’t quite impress her while the constant taunts from her mother-in-law only aggravated her situation.

In such circumstances, her only hope was Dr. Sen [Rajat Kapoor], a neurologist who constantly tried to make her understand over the years that it wasn’t as easy for Buddhi to be like any other normal child the way she wanted. Having a soft corner for both Padmini and her son, he wanted them to understand that Buddhi was indeed a special child and just differently-abled.

On the other hand Dr. Sathya [Anupam Kher] had a different way of looking at things. A qualified Ayurvedic physician, he had invented a drug which could convert a dumb individual into smart, even though it had it’s side effect of memory loss. Aiming for a Nobel Prize, he could well have Buddhi as a patient on whom he could test his drug.

Ravi meets Dr. Sathya and in one of those desperate and week moments, agrees for the drug to be administered to his son. Buddhi turns into a genius but forgets about his past. Also, he comes across as a confused and a puzzled guy which only makes things complimented.

Final nail is hit in the coffin when Dr. Sathya’s past is revealed and the ill effects of the drug start becoming clearer.

Did Ravi and Padmini end up paying a high price for the well being of their son? Was the piece of sky that their son got good enough for him to make a place for himself there?

A film about modern day obsession about achieving success at any cost, Kaushik Roy directed APNA ASMAAN has been traveling the globe in festival circuits.

Om Shanti Om - Masala mix
[Thursday, November 08, 2007]

There was a time when movies were made as ‘masala mix’ which could boast of a statement - ‘Isme action bhi hai, drama bhi hai, emotion bhi comedy bhi aur romance bhi’!

Farah Khan had achieved it in MAIN HOON NAA earlier. Now she promises to do the same at a much bigger scale and grandeur with OM SHANTI OM. And to add to the fun, she mixes up the reincarnation theme too with a 70s setting to it!

As is a known fact by now, the film is about Om [Shahrukh Khan], a junior artist from the 70s who falls in love with the biggest superstar of her era, Shanti [Deepika Padukone]. Though his admiration for her began as a fan, he found himself getting closer to her with every passing day.

In Om, Shanti too found solace as she could be herself sans her superstar tag. Meanwhile Om also had the company of his mother [Kirron Kher] and Pappu Master [Shreyas Talpade], his friend and co-star. Enter the villain Mukesh Mehra [Arjun Rampal], a Bollywood star in himself and the coming together of Om and Shanti seemed like a forgotten dream.

Both Om and Shanti die, only to meet each other again in their new ‘janam’. Circa 21st century and Om is now Om Kapoor, a reigning superstar who now enjoys all the fame and success even though he has deficiencies as an actor. Meanwhile Shanti too is back as Sandy.

But how about fighting off the bad forces again? Will Mukesh resurface to come between Om and Sandy again?

As a film OM SHANTI OM comes with a number of specials:

- Guest appearance by over 30 stars
- SRK’s six pack abs
- Arjun Rampal’s new look
- Amisha and Dia special appearance
- Pyarelal coming from a hiatus and arranging ‘Dhoom Tana’
- 70s style over the top drama

Releasing at record number of prints all over the globe, OM SHANTI OM is poised to be one of the biggest earners of 2007 as it hits the screens this Diwali.

Saawariya - Promises to be a class affair
[Thursday, November 08, 2007]

Some love stories have to be experienced and not just talked and read about. SAAWARIYA is one such love story. Mystic, pure, intriguing, musical. Words fall short to explain the essence of SAAWARIYA which promises to be set as a timeless romantic rendezvous of two young hearts.

Two hearts that go by the name of Raj [Ranbir Kapoor] and Sakina [Sonam Kapoor]. Raj is an artist as well as a dreamer. For him, the world is in black and white even as he loves to paint his life with all the colors. One such bright spot in his life appears to be Sakina with whom he has a chance encounter at a bridge in a picturesque town.

A town which boasts of nature at it’s best and is probably unbelievable with a natural charm to it enhanced by the presence of mountains and mist. Almost poetic in nature, the place promises to set the two hearts talking to each other.

While Raj tries his best to woo Sakina, she has a certain enigmatic persona to her which only adds on to the mystery and intrigue. She reveals her haunting past which only brings Raj further closer to Sakina. As he gets deeper down into this mad romance, more revelations only startle him further.

Meanwhile there are also characters played by Salman Khan and Rani Mukherjee added to the plot which bring on different dimensions to SAAWARIYA.

Rumored to be based on a short story called WHITE NIGHTS, SAAWARIYA is in complete contrast to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s last BLACK and promises to be a love story which would take a viewer into a different journey altogether.

The film has music by Monty Sharma and also stars veterans like Begum Para, Achla Sachdev and Zohra Sehgal. With an A team of Ravi Chandran as a cinematographer and Omung Kumar as art director with Sanjay Leela Bhansali taking on roles of screenplay writer as well as editor, SAAWARIYA appears to be an out and out class offering from the master film maker.
