Himesh is one of my favourites - Sameer

Himesh is one of my favourites - Sameer
[Interview by Nkut News Bureau]
Monday, February 25, 2008
With over 3000 songs to his credit, renowned lyricist Sameer finds his name in the Limca book of records as he celebrates his 50th birthday.

You are 50 years old today and you’ve also made it to the Limca book of records, how do you react to such scales of achievement?

I’m indeed happy today. Whatever I am today is because of my colleagues who have supported me at all times. I’m completely thankful to the film fraternity who has stood by me throughout.

Describe the initial days of your career? Was it easy for you as you had the backing of a great lyricist father, Anjaaan Saab?

The beginning of anyone’s career is difficult and so was mine. The comparisons drawn between my father and me were immense. It’s so difficult when you are often compared with a very successful father at the initial stages of your career.
It’s a problem faced by many today, even Abhishek Bachchan goes through that daily. For me, I was really dedicated to make it big and my father guided me. His blessings have made me what I am.

Which movie according to you was your career defining one?

‘Dil’ was the first film that got me my recognition which was backed by Ashiqui and ever since my career just took off.

Over 27 years in the Industry, would you like to credit your success to any particular music label?

I definitely share a very good bond with T-series, Venus and Tips. They have been my back bone.

Define your success from the perspective of your playback singers?

Kumar Sanu , Himesh Reshammiya , Alka Yagnik , Udit and Sonu are all very dear to me. But Kumar, Alka and Anurradha Paudwal sang the maximum for me during the Nadeem-Shravan era.

Kumar Sanu says he made his career out of your lyrics. Your comment…

Kumar is a dear one. In the earlier days whenever I would write a song I would visualize him. He is one of the few singers whose voice suited the big screen for every hero. We still hope to work together and I’m sure he will make a big comeback.

Do tell us a little about your bonding with Himesh?

Himesh is one of my favourites from the 3rd generation. He was one of the very few who gave me constant feedback and suggestions to change according to the trends. He is a very hard working lad and his base is his melody that never dies.

Elaborate a little on the Sameer-Himesh success formula?

There isn’t any such formula. The only formula to success is hard work.

At the age of 50 and such heights of achievement what more do you look forward to?

Age does not matter. I start off each morning with a prayer and by putting aside my age and ego. In fact this is the only birthday I have celebrated in the last 27 years . The celebration has been to gather people who have supported me or have been close to me.
There is lots to look forward to each year, this year I have Race which is very dear to me. Then there is Khambaqt Ishq , Right Ya Wrong , Sadiyaan , Suneel Darshan ‘s next , Dharmesh Darshan’s next and many more.

How do you see the future of lyrics writing in India?

The scenario of lyrics writing too is evolving but the basic format of simplicity of lyrics never changes. No matter what you write it always has to be from the heart.

What would be your take on Prasoon Joshi who has made a huge impact as a lyricist in the last couple of years?

Prasoon is very talented. I hope he maintains his style. He is also very down to earth. He represents the newer talent and now is the right time for new music directors, lyricists etc. This flexibility and freedom to work will surely bring in many more talented people like Prasoon.
This flexibility is what allows music directors to also lend their own voices and try other variations.

Finally any message for those fans who have bought your tapes right from the Dil , Ashiqui to Aap Ka Suroor?

I firstly want to thank them. They have always been by me and would want them to just keep faith in me. Faith is the only power that makes me become a successful songwriter.

Here’s wishing you all the very best and it was a pleasure talking to you…

Same here. Thank you.

Pranali – The Tradition Preview

Pranali – The Tradition
NkuT Movies [Wednesday, February 20, 2008]

Harward Entertainments’ maiden venture “Pranali – The Tradition”, now complete and scheduled for April release, is a hard-hitting film, which depicts the story of a poor village girl married off to a village deity and then condemned to become a prostitute.

“Pranali – The Tradition” is the story of a girl born in a small village on the border of Karnataka & Maharashtra, a girl whose childhood is yet untouched and full of pure innocence but she still falls prey to one of the unconventional and downtrodden systems of our society; a stigma of being a “Devdasi”. She inadvertently becomes an object of desire – the one with whom the so-called highly respected and well-known people of the society could suffice their hunger for lust.

Condemned to prostitution, her destiny takes a much-awaited turn, when she decides to give birth to a new life which in turn gives her hope and adds zest to her life. This further redefines her morbid life with a new meaning, liberating her off all the shackles. She commits herself that she will fight all odds to educate her child and do everything possible that could make way for her child to lead a normal and best life. However, the idea was not so easy to digest for the respectable people that a Sex worker’s child will be given an equivalent standard of education as being received by the children’s of the well-to-do people of the society.

The film depicts the dark facts of Pranali’s life and unveils forbidden truths of known and so-called respectable people in the society. Along with grooming her own life, Pranali moulds the lives of other fallen women and gives a new definition and direction to their otherwise meaningless lives.

The film has been produced by Nikhil Mathur, who heads the Harward Group of Companies, which has varied interests in various corporate fields including financial engineering, fund managements, investments and securities. The Group is also into property development business joint ventures with overseas realty funds and developers. The company has also ventured into entertainment, media, advertising and communication services.

Hirdesh Kamble, erstwhile assistant to John Mathew Mathan, Mahesh Bhatt and Vikram Bhatt, has directed the film with cinematography by Najeeb Khan.

Well known singer Kailesh Kher makes his debut as music director with this film along with Paresh and Naresh.

Nargis (”Garam Masala” fame) plays the title role along with Upendra Limaye, Raman Trikha, Sudha Chandran, Dippsikha, Vinay Apte, Abhhay Bhaargav, Hemant Pandey, Sujata Segal, Suzanne, Vinod Khemani, Vaidehi, Rohini and Kalpana Sathe. Other credits include action by Abbas Ali Moghul, story-screenplay by Hirdesh Kamble and Manoj Pandey, dialogue by Manoj Pandey, editing by Chaitanya Bose, art by Jasmita Pathare, lyrics by Anil Pandey and choreography by Saroj Khan.

“When you do a film you want more and more people to see it”- Vinay Pathak

“When you do a film you want more and more people to see it”- Vinay Pathak
Monday, February 18, 2008
After the immense success of ‘Bheja Fry’ the actor with a funny bone Vinay Pathak is on cloud 9. Making himself a niche in a highly commercial Bollywood market, Vinay has a lot more to offer us this year.We get up close with the actor to find out what’s keeping him busy. After the initial pleasantries we get in to a friendly chat, and right into the core of the matter.

Vinay, to start off with what’s the latest film you have signed and also tell us a little about your character in the film.

Well, the last I’ve signed is ‘Mumbai Chaka Chak’ a film by Sanjay Jha Mastan being produced by Suneil Shetty’s Popkorn Entertainment. This film is special as it’s an ensemble cast and the subtext of the film is about cleanliness in our city. The story has a message which is just so apt and it’s the right time for a film like this.

A little about your character, please…

The shooting of the film hasn’t started as yet but still I’ll give you a little insight into my character. Basically, I play the antagonist in the film who stands for all that is wrong. He is ignorant of the hazards of accumulating waste and dirtying the city. It’s more like the new school of thought comprising of Rahul Bose, Mandira Bedi and Cyrus Broacha taking on the old school guys i.e. Suresh Menon and me.

Post ‘Bheja Fry’ how has life changed?

Post Bheja Fry I’m getting lots of work to choose from. Producers are actually offering me chunkier roles. I have many such releases this year.

Do tell us of the movies in store for us and a little about the characters you play

In April-May there is ‘Oh My God’ which is an entertainer pitched in the modern society. I’m paired with Divya Dutta, and the film directed by Saurab Shrivastav talks about the craze for making money.

Then there is ‘Straight’ by Paruti Balagopalan of ‘Rules-Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula’. It’s a romantic love story with Gul Panag.

And then there is Saurab Shukla’s ‘Raat Gayi Baat Gayi’ with Rajat , Neha Dhupia and Anu Menon (Lolakutty of Channel V) . I have to mention that Anu has floored us with her performance, she is simply awesome.

Any plans of turning director?

Yup! Maybe next year.

So what sort of genre do you want to explore?

Don’t know as of now.

Do you feel that Ranveer, Rajat and you have created a clique of your own that makes the so called ‘niche’ films for a ‘niche’ audience?

Niche is all hogwash. We too belong to the same Industry. Its one big hub and we too are members of it. It’s not true that our movie is for anybody specifically. At the end of the day, when you do a film you want more and more people to see it. Then how can it be ‘niche’. It’s just that today the masses are appreciative of our work and the consumer is the king, looking always for something different and entertaining.

You seem to have lost a lot of weight, is it particularly for any film?

Yes. It’s for a film which I wouldn’t want to reveal anything about right now.

Vinay, tell me according to you what’s the best film that has released this year?

‘Mithya’.

Ok, if one were to watch a film according to your recommendation what would it be?

Mithya. Did you watch it?

Yes

Well, what did you think of the film?

hmmm….it was ok, but you were barely there in it. Anyways,we look forward to greater performances from your side. It was a pleasure talking to you. God bless!

Thank you.

Mission Istaanbul - Apoorva Lakhia returns with a mission

Mission Istaanbul - Apoorva Lakhia returns with a mission
[Monday, February 18, 2008]

After the immense success of Shoot-Out at Lokhandwala, Director Apoorva Lakhia is all set with his next venture ‘Mission Istanbul’.

The Movie has a huge starcast (mostly from Shoot-out at Lokhandwala) and is produced by Suniel Shetty’s Popcorn and Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures.

Vikas Sagar (Zayed Khan), an ambitious and admired journalist, who would go to any limits for a scoop, is asked by Owais Husain (Suniel Shetty), a senior producer at the controversial Istanbul-based news channel Al Johara, to fly to Istanbul for a three- month long orientation programme. Their offer couldn’t have come at a better time for Vikas, who’s undergoing a painful divorce with wife Anjali.

As part of his orientation, Vikas gets hands-on experience in Al Johara’s newsroom.

He finds himself creating news as he steals the secrets from the channel itself.

When Vikas voices his plans to resign from the channel, he is reminded by the Turkish commando, Rizwan Khan (Vivek Oberoi), how other people who had quit had been knocked off because they knew too much.

Will Vikas fall prey to the terrorist’s plans like many other journalists? Or will he survive the assault?

The Bloody mission against terrorism has just begun

Krazzy 4 - If you think they r crazy, think again!

Krazzy 4 - If you think they r crazy, think again!
[Saturday, February 16, 2008]

The next film that is in the making for Producer- Rakesh Roshan/Filmkraft Productions (India) Pvt. Ltd. is a hilarious comedy flick ‘Krazzy 4’. With ‘Krazzy 4’, Rakesh Roshan hands over the directorial baton to Jaideep Sen even as he revels in the role of producer par excellence!

So impressed was Rakesh Roshan with Jaideep’s dedication and willingness to learn, that he has entrusted his next film ‘Krazzy 4’ into Jai’s capable hands. The fact that this is the first film under the Filmkraft banner to be directed by somebody other than Rakesh Roshan, speaks volume for the faith he has reposed in his protégé.

The music for this film is by Rajesh Roshan, another integral part of the Roshan family. He has composed award-winning music for ‘Khudgarz’, ‘Khoon Bhari Maang’, ‘Kishen Kanhaiya’, ‘Khel’, ‘King Uncle’, ‘Karan Arjun’ and ‘Koyla’. His music for ‘Kaho Na Pyar Hai’ outperformed all his past work and topped every music chart. Now with ‘Krazzy 4’, Rajesh Roshan delivers a thumping, foot-tapping score yet again.

Character Sketches :

As the name suggests, it is a mad, mad, mad world out there. Some are nutty about money, some deranged about power, some of them cracked with stress, some others unhinged by overwork and yet a few others insanely in love, and everyone is worried they are going bananas.

Except the ‘Krazzy 4’, because they are already crazy!

The beautiful Juhi plays Dr. Sonali, a psychiatrist who knows what is wrong with her patients. As a sensitive woman she firmly believes if you really want to make your patients well, you should treat them with your heart, not just your mind. She has faith that all it needs is a little time and lots of patience to make them normal…to make them part of the mad, mad, mad world out there…

Arshad Warsi plays the angry young man, Raja. His blood boils, his fists clench and he’s ready to beat the daylights out of anyone who upsets him in some way. Raja’s anger knows no bounds, he’ll hit out at the slightest provocation or even without. Intermittent explosive disorder is what the doctors call it. ‘Sarphira’, is what everybody else does!

Irrfan Khan plays Dr. Mukherjee, your perfect doc – clean and orderly, not a pin out of place. . So what’s wrong with that? Obsessive compulsive personality disorder, that’s what. He has decided that he’s the Captain of the team! But so obsessed is he by the need to be in control of a situation that he doesn’t realise he has totally lost control of himself and his mind.

Rajpal Yadav essays the role of Gangadhar who is marching to a beat only he can hear; he’s fighting for a cause that’s long over. But in his muddled mind he’s still fighting for freedom, still hobnobbing with the likes of Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi. Schizophrenic Gangadhar lives in the past…his mates are Nehru and Gandhi, Tilak and Patel! He’s so busy fighting for swaraj, he’s lost his sanity!

Suresh Menon is Dabboo. Cute Dabboo is everybody’s pet. So what if he hasn’t spoken for years? So what if he’s frightened all the time? So what if he’s autistic? Cute and adorable, when it comes to Dabboo everybody is super protective. Even if he can hear and understand, Dabboo refuses to speak. And nobody knows why!

Dia Mirza plays the role of Shikha the girl friend of Raja (Arshad Warsi). As a TV reporter she controls the news on the channel, but as a woman she is unable to control the unruly and unmanageable rage of Raja - the man she loves.

Rajat Kapur plays R. K. Sanyal who is an Industrialist. Oh, and also Dr Sonali’s husband. But in his quest for power and money he takes a step that will have alarming consequences for his wife and her patients – the krazzy 4!

Zaakir Hussain as Srivastav is so neck deep in illegal activities that now he’ll stoop to anything – even kidnapping and murder – to keep him ahead.

Watch out! The ‘Krazzy 4’ are coming your way!! If all goes well the film will be released on April 11, 2008.

But are the ‘Krazzy 4’ ready for the world? And is the world ready for them? We have to wait and watch.

And yes…If you think they are crazy, think again! Just sit back tight and get set for an extremely funny roller coaster ride with the ‘Krazzy 4’!
