What do you think of the music of Jhoom Barabar Jhoom?

This is Shaad second film with me and coming off a film like Bunty aur Babli it’s a great task to try and create an album which captures the flavour of the film, the madness and the flamboyance of the film and to try and outdo the previous album. I am really and fully convinced after a lot of hardwork put in by Sahankar Ehsaan Loy,Shaad and Gulzar sahab that they have actually managed to completely outdo Bunty aur Babli to Jhoom Barabar Jhoom which is by far one of the best album I have ever heard in my life. It is so full of energy and it’s a perfect representation of what the film is. It captures the madness the flamboyance, the attitude, the romance and just magnifies it a hundred folds. It’s flawless

Which is your favourite track in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom ?

It being such an album which is so good it’s very tough to choose. I love the song between Preity and me which is Bolna Halke Halke which is a romantic track. I think that’s a wonderful song its also one of the few songs that’s on the lower and slower tempo in the film while the others are very high energy so it’s a welcome change. It’s a beautiful track which is beautifully sung and written, wonderfully picturerized so I like the romantic track Bolna Halke Halke and obviously I am partial to the title track of Jhoom Barabar Jhoom just for its sheer energy, it’s superb.

What was it like working with Shankar Ehsaan Loy?

It never seizes to amaze me how they mange to come up with such great and diverse music everytime. What is wonderful is how they work as a team individually they are great musicians Shankar is a wonderful singer, Loy is a great pianist and Ehsaan plays wonderful guitar they play many other instruments as well. The synergy that they share they just come up with such normal tunes and tracks and the greatest thing is that when ever they work with Shaad I feel they find a middle path between the two,Shaad and them. They have a very serious and distinctive quality and sound to their music they seem to forget that when ever they are working with Shaad and they create a new sound al together and I think that’s superb to do it time and up time to reinvent yourself. You really can’t say enough of them they are just fantastic and I am just very happy that they have agreed to do the film and they have come up with such a great track because they made our job as an actor so much more easier.

The look in JBJ has been highly appreciated can you tell us something about that?

I would prefer not to call it the look of the film but call it the attitude when you have Shaad as the captain of the ship you know there’s going to be oodles of attitude and a very distinctive style. I think Jhoom Barabar Jhoom is the most precise representation of what Shaad is like in real life. I think he gave everybody a peek thru the window in Bunty aur Babli how mad he actually is and how flamboyant is he and what a genius is he and I think he’s truly allowed everybody to look into his soul in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. Its Shaad Ali Sehgal all the way its totally him, its his film and everything is owed to him in this film. He’s responsible for every inch.

What was it like working with Aki Narula?

Aki has worked with us in Bunty aur Babli so it was wonderful to reprise with most of the team this time around. Aki as a designer is very flamboyant, he loves style and he loves to blow things out of the water and he got a film in which he could really freak out as he is and he’s done a wonderful job. He was so much in tune with what Shaad wanted and they together have managed to come up with a look which was really needed for the film. The look is distinctive, it is very special and the look is something which aided the performance a lot. So when you wear the kind of clothes that you are wearing the accessories, with your hair and the make up it helps you become the character. I always believe that looking the part is fifty percent of your job and that is largely aided by the work of Aki Narula.I really think it’s the finest piece of costume designed in Hindi film till date.

Which is your favorite outfit from the film?

I like all of them. They were clothes almost wonderful for Jhoom Barabar Jhoom..It allowed me as a human being as an actor to do things and wear things that I wouldn’t have never dreamt off in my life. The kind of clothes Aki has come up with in this film I I don’t think I would ever be content but they suited the character.Rikki Thukral was that kind of character and it suited him brilliantly and it was just a pleasure to get into somebody else’s skin be so loud and get away with it. The wonderful thing about the costumes is When we use to shoot on the streets of London people use to actually look at the lead actors and really wonder why we wearing such clothes and we are use to become conscious at times. I think Preity was the most sober of the lot followed by Bobby then Lara and I was the maddest but al though we were very conscious while shooting. I think once you see the film the costumes don’t seem to jump out on you because the world created by Shaad and Bose our cinematographer and Aki you don’t pay attention to the costume. It helps you take to a different world of Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and I think any technician working on the film aides and manages to help the audience to transform themselves into a different world. The world of the movie then you have succeed it and i think every technician in this film has managed that.

How did Jhoom Barabar Jhoom happen to you? What was it about the script that made you decide to do the film?

Jhoom Barabar Jhoom was a story that Yash Raj had told me while we were shooting for Bunty aur Babli it was then called Sangam Mien. It kept evolving it moved from Delhi station to Water Loo Station. It grew in stature and style and in scale so its something that I can very luckily say that I was blessed to see from its inception from when it was a germ of an idea so it happened over a time and I think it helped a lot that I knew off the script and of the idea from the ideation stage because it helps to acquaint oneself with the script and the character. So it’s a lot of fun for me to see it grow and finally become a great film that’s to come.

While you have grown as an actor from Bunty aur Babli to Jhom Bara Bar Jhoom ?

I think the main aspect is the confidence when I took on Bunty aur Babli there was a huge confidence problem because I wasn’t sure whether I would be able to manage that level. I tried very hard to maintain a very high pitch know in the level of performance which is something Shaad really likes. Shaad is a believer that anybody can do that to carry off a character which is very high octane and to carry it off with ease is very tough. I thought Bunty was one such character very tough to do. After I completed Bunty aur Babli and saw the film I had confidence in Shaad in the sense that he always believed in me as an actor and I was happy that he managed to take out the performances in me so when Jhoom Barabar Jhoom came along there wasn’t any apprehension towards the film or the character al though it was ten notches above Bunty aur Babli in attitude, pitch and in know we were more bullish about the film and we said yes lets do it and we tried to be very confident and attack it head on so it was a matter of confidence I think on Shaad’s part it. One criticism that gave our way to Bunty aur Babli was that they thought it was two separate films being made they felt Bunty aur Babli should not have been a serious love story a the end of the film and that it should not have the gravity that it has in the last half an hour they wanted to see the madness of Bunti aur Babli. I felt in some part may be it was the makers of Bunty aur Babli and the actors the team felt that we have to give it some sort of gravity to justify the characters and make them more human and we cant make a film which is just a laugh riot and showing these two kids doing crazy things. I think that was the problem in our confidence we were trying to be a bit safe I think we throw emotions into the wind in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and its gone all the way and it’s a thoroughly entertaining film, it’s very funny. It’s what Adi says masala to the core and I think that’s how we have grown Shaad and me. I think we have the confidence to take on more like Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and blow it up and play it on the scale and the way we want to do it.

What do you have to say about Shaad and Abhishekh sharing a bond and give their best together even though it’s just their second film?

I think it’s the comfort I think Shaad has the comfort of knowing that he can be himself in front of me and he want be judged and I love him for the person that he is and I have the same thing towards him I can be completely me and I have no inhibitions from him and that’s largely because him of the kind of person he is. He’s a very open person and I think that’s very exciting for an actor and most importantly is that he loves his artist nothing is more important then them and he is very protective about them and he literally treats them like children.Rani and me when we were doing Bunty aur Babli we were doing Bunty aur Babli were treated like children on the set he really mollycoddles you and he really cares for you and that comes thru. All though this is my second film under Shaad as a director. I have done four films in which he helped on humor he is one of the primary reasons I got humor then we did Bunty aur Babli he worked on Guru with me and now Jhoom Barabar Jhoom he’s a great friend. I think when there is chemistry between the director and his actor it always comes thru. The camera is too short and it catches everything and I think that’s one of Shaad’s greatest assets it’s that he makes actors very comfortable. It’s because he demand’s a lot when you see Jhoom Barabar Jhoom its very unrealistic in terms of what is required of an actor to do, it can scare you its like you are standing outside one of the great institution of art’s in Paris of which he have all learnt about in school and you are outside dancing with fifty French dancers which is rather ostentatiously and madly and so are you in this very messed up look singing “Ticket to Hollywood” in vulgar movements so you know you need to have a lot of confidence in your director more importantly the director has to have a lot of confidence in you and he has to help you forget that there is a world around you and keep you in the work of the film and Shaad always manages to do that and that only tells you about the kind of person he is.

There is a lot of dancing happening in the film? What was it like working with Vaibhavi Merchant?

First of all I have to say whatever performances I have done in songs thru out my career and whatever performances I do today the majority of the credit for that goes to Chinku whether she was choreographing the song or not. .She is one choreographer who has really helped me and really pushed me and taught me to throw quotient to the wind and just be. She was the first choreographer who ever told me that it’s not how well you dance if you are not a good dancer it doesn’t matter its how well you enjoy the song and she pushes you to do that. She is never stresses on a particular step she is more concerned about your expression so whatever little bit of a dancer I am today is largely is almost entirely Vaibhavi. She’s a dear friend and according to me is one of the best choreographers we have on the scene today.Hand’s down she is brilliant and I love her range as a Choreographer if you see Jhoom Barabar Jhoom you will understand it she is the same person who has picturerized a Jhoom Barabar Jhoom song and Bolna Halke Halke at the same time and has done it effortlessly. She is wonderful and I love her because she is always pushing me and firing me to work harder and I enjoy that. I guess that is why I am more relaxed in front f her. She is also complaining that I don’t rehearse which I don’t because I some where have this complacent attitude that’s because I have the confidence that she is there and she will not ok it till I get it right but then again I also know that she is going to give me steps which she knows I can do. A lot of times you find choreographers who compose a step because that’s the way they see it they don’t look it from the point of view of a character or an actor doing it. Vaibhavi has this unique ability of understanding the character knowing how the character should be dancing and singing and just opposing that with which actor is going to perform knowing the limitations. Like I have a lot of limitations when I dance and she is aware of that and she will choreograph steps keeping in mind the character and what I can do so when she shows me a rehearsal I never question because I know that these are steps which she will get out of me and I will not look stupid doing that. I really think she is an ideal person for this film and I am so happy that she’s worked on the film and I don’t want to say what work she does you will see the film and understand it for yourself.

What does it feel like when you working with a family member?

When you are in front of the camera you are an actor and you have to forget your personal relationship. If you think about your personal relationship they are going to hamper your performances for eg you are standing in front of the camera with Mr. Amitabh Bachchan and you think oh my god that’s my father in front of me you are definitely going to get intimidated over all you have to try and be professional even though its tough.

What was it like working with Bobby whom you are working with for the first time with?

I have been wanting to work with Bobby since I started working I have known him since I was a kid and finally we get an opportunity to work together. I am so happy because I really think this is the right movie and I am glad we never got the opportunity to work together before this and that this is are first movie together. He’s just wonderful he is one of the sweetest co-stars one can ask for. Thoroughly professional always ready to help out he was all that I thought to be and much more on the set and as an actor. I just feel so privileged to be a part of the film where he is there as well and we get to share screen space.

What was it like working with Lara?

This is Lara’s second film with me after “Mumbai Se Aaya mera Dost” She is very close to me. She’s like a sister to me and I love her very much. The amount Lara has grown as an actor is stupendous and she seems to be growing leaps and bounds in every film. To take on a film like Jhoom Barabar hoom for Lara was a big step she’s never done anything like this before and I am so happy that she did it. She just blows it on screen, she’s superb, you will see Lara in a role which she has never done before and I don’t think many people have done it before. She does it so well, it was a very tough role to do and she has done it seamlessly, brilliant performance by Lara. I am so excited for her I really feel she is such a talented girl.Shaad and Adi have given her a wonderful role and she hasn’t let anybody down there were times when she would perform and the entire unit would clap for her. She’s done such a good job.

What was it like working with Preity?

Preity is very natural with her performance. The best thing about Preity is that she looks after her co-stars when they are in front of the camera she is for ever ensuring that my make up was Ok and if my hair was out of place she would correct it and get the shot cut. It’s wonderful to work with co-actors who take such good care of you because usually we actors are very selfish we look at our self and are bothered only about our own performance. Preity looks at a film in entirety and she has no problems with other actors being on the set with such a huge star cast it can be intimidating for a fact but she is so cool about it and so helpful contradictory to this whole bubbly, young teenage kind of a girl image she is really like a mother she takes care of everyone, busy feeding everyone, making sure everybody has eaten, suggesting good restaurants and saying things like this is how we should do the shot and lets work it out like this and rehearse together. She just loves to rehearse and you will not come across many actors who would like to do that and put in the kind of work she does. She works very hard to achieve a natural performance that comes out of her. She is great fun and I am very happy that she is a part of the film. She adopted what we call the right attitude that Shaad sets on the set which I was a bit concerned because I had worked with Shaad in the past so I was not to sure if the other actors would understand Shaad style of working and the kind of atmosphere and the environment he likes on the set but Preity comes right into the deep belt and she just blended in and she was one of the guys. It was great and yet another wonderful performance by her. I am so glad that the whole team came so well together.

What is it like working in a multi star cast film again as opposed to a solo?

I prefer an ensemble cast any day. I think it’s very lonely and boring to be singly standing in front of the camera delivering dialogues. The more the merrier I feel very lucky that I get to work with all of them. Everybody gets along so well, It’s like a family and great fun.

Any one memorable or unusual incident that comes to mind during the shooting of the film?

They are all to embarrassing to tell I just remember being embarrassed a lot. But the film has been memorable. I think that’s Shaad’s forte to make every scene memborable.
He doesn’t believe in any particular graph he just wants everything to be perfect and he works really hard on the sets to make every moment perfect so it’s very hard to select one.

Five words to describe Jhoom Barabar Jhoom?

You need a lot more then five words to describe Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.you can’t describe Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, It’s just everything. I have never come across a film like Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. One cannot classify or label Jhoom Barabar Jhoom its simply outstanding.

“I could have out-danced Ash, Hrithik,” says Abhishek Bachchan

“I could have out-danced Ash, Hrithik,” says Abhishek Bachchan
Thursday, November 23, 2006
“I am convinced that I could have out danced Aishwarya and Hrithik Roshan, Bipasha and Uday ‘toh baye haath ka khel hai’,” says Abhishek Bachchan jokingly in this exclusive interview. ‘Dhoom 2’ is a sequel to ‘Dhoom’ and Abhi is one of the actors (other than Uday Chopra) who have been repeated in the sequel and obviously he is very excited about being a part of such a big film as this. As for his rivalry with Hrithik then Bachchan Junior feels that Roshan makes him work harder. Over to the man himself:

Did you expect Dhoom to be such a blockbuster in the first place?

We actors expect all our films to be blockbusters because we put that kind of effort into them, we hope for the best we’d all worked very hard, we knew we had something normal and unique and simple. We then worked towards making the best possible film that we could make and thankfully the audiences appreciated our efforts.

Dhoom 2 will be your first sequel, did you have to reprise your mannerisms and attitude from the first role?

(In jest) Actually my first sequel was ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’, which I played a very prominent role, ….I did, I was the main guy in the film yaar, …then? So ‘Dhoom 2’ was my second sequel. Being a sequel it was that much more easier, because you know the character, you know what the character can do and cannot do and having worked on an entire film being that one particular character, it was interesting because in the sequel we just got to tweak Jai Dixit a bit but we didn’t have to establish his character as it was already established, so we got to play with him a bit, for e.g. in Dhoom 2 I feel Jai Dixit is slightly more relaxed that’s reflective in the way he dresses in his general attitude. I’d like to be believe he’s a bit more cooler in this film, cool in the sense he’s calmer and more level headed, has things more planned out.

How different or similar is Dhoom 2 from Dhoom?

It’s the same genre but I believe it’s a different film. I’d like to believe it’s a bigger and better film but being the same genre it can be associated as the same kind of film, but what I really liked about ‘Dhoom 2’ was that its not about fast bikes and thieves, it’s more than that. And at first I remember questioning Adi and Sanjay saying that it should have more of what the original had, to which Adi had a very good answer that if you give them the same thing again, they are going to get bored of it. The very reason why the audiences liked ‘Dhoom’ if you do that in ‘Dhoom 2’ they will say okay, what are you serving this time?

You have Hrithik and Aishwarya as your adversaries, what do they bring to the Dhoom board?

They bring a whole different dimension, they bring a whole lot more viewers we’d like to believe, we’ve been very selfish Uday and me in ‘Dhoom 2’, we’ve hired bigger stars so that more people come to watch the movie (in jest).

You have played a con man in Bunty Bubli and Bluffmaster, and in Dhoom 2 you play the cop, which is tougher and why?

Everything is challenging, the endeavour is to do challenging work and to push yourself to do work that you have not done in the past. So I thing everything has to be challenging, if it’s not challenging, it’s not going to be fun, and you’re not going to enjoy what you are doing and if you are not enjoying what you are doing, then you are going to be dishonest to your profession, which is sacrilege for us. Having said that, keeping in mind that I believe that your work should be challenging, the challenge in Dhoom 2 was to make Jai Dixit that much more interesting than he was in the first part, yes, he’s the same character and I am repeating myself here, but that’s where the challenge lay, having kept the same foundation, how do you make him more interesting this time round, how do you retain the audiences attention on him?

How did you like the music of Dhoom 2 as compared to Dhoom?

(Answered all in jest in his inimitable style) I think the music of ‘Dhoom 2’ is weaker than Dhoom …that’s because I only have one song in this film and in another song I am standing by the bar. I am convinced that I could have out danced Aishwarya and Hrithik Roshan, Bipasha and Uday ‘toh baye haath ka khel hai’. I have only 1 song in ‘Dhoom 2’ in ‘Dhoom’ I had 3 songs. I think it’s very unfair…but what can I do. It’s nice music

Did you do your stunts yourself and what was it like?

We did a lot of the stunts, but being an action film, there are a lot of safety precautions that are taken. Amin our stunt co-coordinator especially is very meticulous when it comes to safety and very very particular, so there are a lot of stunts that every actor is very willing to do and very keen to do buy Amin didn’t allow us coz he thought that we didn’t really need to do it. He believes in the mantra of safety first, and that his actors don’t need to do each and every stunt.

Did you feel you were in competition with Hrithik while shooting the film?

No not at all, I’ve never been one person who believes in competition, instead of competition I would like to believe Hrithik is more of an inspiration for me. He makes me work harder, he makes me a better actor, and he makes me want to do my best, so he’s more inspiration than competition.
