Reliance to finance Bollywood ‘royalty’

The Bachchan family, the de facto royalty of Bollywood, has joined forces with the fast-growing entertainment arm of the conglomerate Reliance to produce movies, television shows and concerts.

Reliance Big Entertainment will provide $250 million to $300 million in the first year to fund new ventures of the Bachchan family, which includes three of Bollywood’s biggest stars: Amitabh Bachchan, who in his 60s continues to be one of the country’s top box-office draws; his actor son, Abhishek; and Abhishek’s wife, Aishwarya Rai, one of India’s best-known female stars. Jaya Bhaduri, the matriarch of the family, is also a seasoned actress, who has appeared in several films in recent years.

Are gowns more suited for the red carpet?

The scene is Bangkok’s green carpet at an awards function for Indian cinema, recently. Where not one of Bollywood’s bold and beautiful wore a sari that evening.

Were they afraid the Indian six yards might trip them up on this short walk of fame? Or are Western gowns more suited for the red carpet (and if in an eco-friendly city, green) international gala film awards functions like the Oscars and Cannes?

Designer Shaina NC deplored Bollywood’s fashion sense in Bangkok, “It’s a pity no actress wore the traditional Indian sari on this international platform where the world was watching who’s wearing what. Instead of aping the West, Bollywood’s glam girls should have taken pride in wearing a sari and making a style statement. Why don’t we flaunt it when we really are proud of our traditions?”

However, designer Rocky S defended Bollywood’s dress code in Bangkok, “Since awards are extremely formal functions, our actresses want to look their formal best, and gowns look truly elegant and beautiful. Also, today our actresses take great care of their bodies and can carry Western attire like a gown with great elan. So, why not?”

Bollywood designer Manish Malhotra, who received an award there himself, also rued the fact that no actress wore a sari in Bangkok. “Katrina Kaif was to wear a black net sari designed by me, but decided against it because she wasn’t feeling too well,” revealed Manish. “As an anchor, Urmila Matondkar sported a gown and then a nice lehenga. Kareena danced for songs from Jab We Met and Tashan but in a bright green cape, blue ghagra and shimmery harem pants. She did wear a sari at another event, though.”

ACCESS BOLLYWOOD

Area theaters regularly program imports from India’s Bollywood movie industry. The following are capsule reviews of currently playing films.

Sarkar Raj (zero stars): The considerable acting talents of Bollywood’s royal family, the Bachchans (Abhishek, wife Aishwarya Rai and father Amitabh), are wasted in this sequel to the 2005 gangster flick, “Sarkar.” Absent a compelling script, director Ram Gopal Varma has to alert the audience when anything of even minor significance happens, using absurdly dramatic music and close-ups of the actors’ most mundane reactions. Varma’s homage to “The Godfather” is as subtle as a horse head in your bed. Not rated; 120 minutes.

Bollywood stars are partying hard in Bangkok

It’s all happening at an international film awards show in Bangkok, where Bollywood has currently descended. Just like Mumbai, the sun never goes down in Bangkok too.

We were witness to this at Sanjay Gupta’s midnight bash, which was co-hosted by Sector watches by Gitanjali Lifestyle. Bollywood’s babes and badshahs let their hair down and partied the night away, as the music bajaued, the wine sparkled and the good times continued through the night.

Danny Denzongpa hopped from one group to another, sharing long and seemingly interesting conversations with Aftab Shivdasani, Mika and then some others. It was amusing to note that inspite of the presence of many handsome hunks including Fardeen Khan, Zayed Khan, Dino Morea, Kunal Kapoor and Manoj Bajpai, it was Danny who stole the limelight that night!

Sanjay ensured that all his guests had a rocking time on the dance floor, even as Mika took to the mike and belted out some of his hits. Dia Mirza was seen having a good time, South actress Shriya Saran, looking pretty in a black gown, danced with Aftab, while director Suparn Verma mingled with his friends. As the night grew darker and the party gained momentum, Kareena Kapoor walked in with Manish Malhotra. Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan were the other star attraction at the bash.

Sector watches by Gitanjali Lifestyle has a philosophy about challenging limits and that flows well with Gupta’s next film. Earlier in the day, at a press conference of the movie, it was Danny who once again amused the locals, by introducing himself in a language that nobody understrood… because it didn’t exist! “It’s an improvisation of a number of oriental languages,” he chuckled. Manoj Bajpai however spoke in his local bihari language, much to the amusementy of the crowd. “

Gitanjali Lifestyle would like to be at the heart of young India who believes in living life in style. We are glad to be associated with Sanjay Gupta’s production house that makes movies with an attitude. This association will allow us to project our company internationally as a fashion house and aid us in our initiative to position Gitanjali Lifestyle as the best in luxury,” said Mehul Choksi, Chairman, Gitanjali Group.

Indian stars vie for glory at Bollywood Oscars

Hundreds of Indian stars prepared to dazzle their fans Sunday at the ‘Bollywood Oscars,’ a glitzy awards ceremony expected to attract 600 million television viewers.

The gala event launched by the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) just eight years ago has become one of the film industry’s most-watched events. Celebrations began Friday with the premiere of ‘Sarkar Raj’ featuring newly-wed superstars Abhishek Bachchan and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan, performing with his father Amitabh Bachchan.

The celebrity couple are up for Best Male and Best Female awards for their roles in ‘Guru’ — a rags-to-riches story of an Indian businessman.

Vying for the coveted Best Picture award are ‘Guru,’ ‘Chak De India,’ ‘Jab We Met,’ ‘Om Shanti Om,’ ‘Life in a Metro’ and ‘Partner.’

At least 500 of Bollywood’s biggest names including Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Govinda — have arrived in Bangkok to promote their unique brand of film-making outside India. But the ceremony at a lavish Bangkok theatre, decorated in traditional Thai style, will highlight films that go beyond India’s traditional song-and-dance fare.
