What will Aishwarya Rai wear down the red carpet at this year’s Cannes Film Festival? Ever since she arrived by horse drawn carriage, dressed in a stunning yellow dress for the premiere of her film Devdas in 2002, Rai’s annual presence at the festival has added a unique Bollywood hue to the red carpet proceedings. Last year, my heart skipped a beat when Rai arrived decked in a white gown with her new husband Abhishek Bachchan on display.
Her choice of apparel has always created waves. In 2003, the Armani-clad Rai was the first Indian actor to sit on the prestigious judges’ panel and the following year, decked in Chopard and a Neeta Lulla skimpy white dress, she made spectators gasp in awe. Black was her colour of choice in 2005 and she arrived hand in hand with fellow L’Oreal brand ambassador Andie MacDowell in 2006. This year Rai will be there again: she is contractually bound by L’Oreal to appear.
Rai, hubby Abhishek and father in law, Amitabh Bachchan will be in town and will probably stay at the Martinez Hotel where they stayed last year. The trio’s latest film, Sarkar Raj, the sequel to Sarkar which is based on The Godfather, will enjoy an out of competition premiere.
From old hats like Shabana Azmi, Hema Malini and Mahesh Bhatt to young actors like Sonam Kapoor, Celina Jaitley and Abhishek Bachchan - on Mother’s Day they all talk about the contribution of their mothers in their lives and give them credit for their success. Here is what the actors have to say on the special occasion:
Sonam Kapoor: My mother is my best friend. What she has taught me is to value the people who love me. I never take anyone for granted. When I was working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and struggling to live up to his penchant for perfectionism, she would step in to guide me. During that crucial time my mother taught me to be patient and strong and to follow my heart. My mother is an exceptional householder. She doesn’t have just three children, but four, my father being the fourth. He has to talk to her like 20 times a day. If I can run my household after marriage with half my mom’s efficiency I’d consider myself a successful woman.
Raima Sen: The biggest thing I’ve learnt from my mother is patience and to respect other people’s space. Also, to be strong-willed! She has also taught my sister and I not to make the mistakes she made in her career. She has brought up both of us as independent women capable of taking our own decisions.
Shabana Azmi: Where do I begin? My mom has taught me compassion, generosity of spirit, and not to make an issue out of everything in life. I’ve inherited my taste in clothes from her. Above all, she has taught me acting and how to approach a role.
Abhishek Bachchan: My mom has taught me to try and be a good human being.
Urmila Matondkar: Mom has taught me not to be judgemental and to love and accept people as they are. From her, I’ve learnt that if you’re patient the best is bound to happen for you.
Shilpa Shetty: What have I learnt from mom? Everything! Most of all I’ve learnt the importance of dignity in my conduct. She also taught me never to let anyone trample on my self-respect.
Ace filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali has finalized Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Bachchan for the title roles in his forthcoming venture ‘Bajirao Mastani’. As anticipated, Big B will not be left behind and will play an important character in the film. The storyline of ‘Bajirao Mastani’ is based on the true story of Bajirao, his wife Kashibai and his mistress Mastani.
Again, this most talked about off-screen couple has also been signed by cinematographer and director Rajiv Menon for his forthcoming film ‘Dhun’. Produced by Eros Entertainment, the film is a light-hearted love story based on music. A.R. Rehman will rope in the ‘Dhuns’ for ‘Dhun’ and the shooting for the film will commence in February 2009.
Now, next in tow is Mani Ratnam who has already signed the happening duo for his next project. So, get geared up to see more of the magical chemistry of this happening couple in the days to come!

The ad maverick Balki’s first feature film Cheeni Kum made a dynamic dent in audience’s minds. It also made him a lifelong Amitabh Bachchan fan. Having gotten masterly performances out of Tabu and the Big B in Cheeni Kum, you’d expect him to recreate the same magic in his next feature film. But no. Balki is on to a different route for his second film. His next film entitled Pa which begins at the end of the year features real-life father-son Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan. And no Tabu! This, in spite of her brilliant performance. “But that’s because Pa has no room for Tabu at all. This time the story is a father-son one. Amitabh has no love interest in the film. And sorry about that. Abhishek does have a girl though.” And for the first time Junior is being paired with the petite and lately out-of-sight Vidya Balan.Says Balki, “We’ve already approached Vidya and she’s more-or-less agreed. I can see her as a pair with Abhishek, can’t you?” Vidya comes into the picture through her sister Priya who works with Balki at Lintas. “In fact, it’s Priya I know well. I got to know Vidya only when we started talking for Pa,” says Balki. After repeated pairing with Preity, Rani and Priyanka, Abhishek is on the look-out for fresh collaborative opportunities. Vidya Balan is someone the Bachchans have admired from the time the Big B saw her in Parineeta and then worked with her in Eklavya. The Big B had compared Vidya with his favourite actress Waheeda Rehman. Both father and son adore Waheedaji. So is Balki looking at the prospect of directing a new pair? “I don’t look at it that way. Vidya suits the role. I’ve known her from her ad days. Though we haven’t done any ad together, she has done ads for my company Lintas.”One questions remains. Why don’t encore- projects happen with Tabu even after powerhouse performances the first time? Madhur Bhandarkar’s Chandni Bar and Balki’s Cheeni Kum led to no second project. In fact the only directors whom Tabu has worked with more than once are Priyadarshan and Gulzar.
