Akshay’s tale of two cities

Akshay Kumar
Mera naam Akshay Kumar hai, aur ye meri Delhi ki team hai,” said Akshay Kumar when the Delhi Daredevils unveiled their team in a grand function held in the city.

Soon, the city was dotted by hoardings featuring the daredevil Akshay Kumar as the brand ambassador of the team.

But suddenly, things don’t seem to be so smooth. That’s because the marketing arm of Mumbai Indians has had a tie-up with Yash Raj’s Tashan, which also stars Akshay Kumar along with Saif Ali Khan, Anil Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor.

This entitles the Mumbai Indians to run a special promo featuring the four stars in conjunction with four cricketing stars of the Mumbai Indians — Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya, Harbhajan Singh and Robin Uthappa. Technically now, we may see Akki rooting for both Mumbai and Delhi teams in the coming days.

When contacted, the PR company handling Delhi told us that Akshay will not be featuring in the Mumbai Indians promotional video. On the contrary, the Reliance Industries spokesperson, Tushar Pania, confirmed,

“Yes, Akshay will feature in the promo. We have tied up with Yash Raj Films wherein they will promote their movie and we will promote our team, it’s merely a coincidence that Akshay is in the movie. We are aware that Akshay is the brand ambassador of the Delhi team.”

During the hoary days of state-controlled television, one rarely saw filmstars on the idiot-box.

Not only did they shy away from appearing on the 35 mm, its restricted scope ensured that they couldn’t even if they wanted to. But not long after satellite television’s advent in India, the country’s greatest superstar suddenly blinked at you from your set’s screen and asked a question.

Amitabh Bachchan’s quizmaster avatar on Kaun Banega Crorepati not only lifted his sagging career, but was also the most remarkable appearance ever by a cinestar on television.

Eight years after that dramatic performance, filmstars on the telly is old hat. Shah Rukh Khan, Govinda, Anupam Kher and Madhuri Dixit have all appeared on the small screen. A forthcoming channel has signed Akshay Kumar to do Fear Factor’s desi version reportedly for Rs 1.5 crore per episode.

Rumours of Aamir Khan being offered Rs 1 crore per episode for a show is TV world’s latest big news, even as reports are hot that Salman Khan will pocket Rs 89 crore to host 104 episodes of an upcoming show. Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and even semi-retired actresses like Sonali Bendre and Raveena Tandon are signing deals for new shows.

Akshay Kumar to host ‘Fear Factor II’

If you remember and crave for more of chill-giving desi-version of ‘Fear Factor’ on Sony TV hosted by Mukul Dev, this is the one for you. The Bollywood king of stunts and martial arts, Akshay Kumar, is set to host the second season of this popular reality show.

We also hear that Akshay is getting bigger bucks than even SRK for this. The little birdie says that Akshay will be paid Rs 1.5 crore per episode, which is more than what SRK is getting for ‘Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain?’ The show will have Bollywood actresses as participants. Akki is definitely the most suitable choice for this show as he himself will be showing his hand at stunts before he goads the contestants to overcome their fears.

To be known that Akshay has already hosted a martial arts show ‘Seven Deadly Arts’ for National Geographic, though it was a long four years back. The seven-part series took viewers on a journey through the world of martial arts.

The team of ‘Hera Pheri’ is ready for another comedy

When you have Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal teamed up with ace director Priyadarshan what do you expect next? Obviously, another rib-tickling comedy in the making.

This is what Jains of Venus are exactly doing. They have managed to rope in this entire team of ‘Hera Pheri’ for their yet untitled comedy venture. Confirming the news, Producer Ratan Jain said, “We had signed Akshay and Priyadarshan some time back. Later, Paresh Rawal and Suniel Shetty were also cast for pivotal roles. Yes, it’s a comedy, but let me clarify, it’s not HERA PHERI. Or even remotely similar to it.”

The film will be shot in one schedule, from September to December.
