Big B Rejects RGV’s Sholay 2

Big B Rejects RGV’s Sholay 2Amitabh Bachchan has refused to be a part of Ram Gopal Varma’s second attempt of the 1975 hit Sholay. At a press conference last weekend, the actor was asked which role he would like to play in RGV’s next remake, and Bachchan begged out. “I won’t do it again,” he said.Bachchan was promoting his upcoming film, Bhoothnath, when he was asked this question.RGV had recently announced that he was planning to remake Sholay once again after his first attempt, Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag bombed badly last year.“I was advised by my lawyers that I could do the remake. But later, I was told I could not use the name of the film. Worse, I could not even use the characters’ name like Gabbar, which eventually became Babban. Therefore, when I look back, I feel it went into mess,” Ramu justified.

Just beginning to be

Amitabh
Amitabh Bachchan should gracefully retire now: Anurag Basu.

Yes or No? If apna Bollywood is to be believed, the answer is a resounding NO.

That’s because AB today represents all that Bollywood has always wanted to be – larger than life and revered. But do superstars come with a shelf-life? While that dictum would hold true for most in the industry, Amitji, as he is lovingly called by all industrywallahs, has a presence that is eternal.

A case of old wine for sure where Big B just seems to get bigger and better with age – Consider all of his recent roles – whether it was playing a possessed cop in Aks, a flirty Sam in KANK, or a father in love with his daughter’s friend in Nishabd or more, which have been well-received. In the process he has also set a trend for other veteran actors to explore unconventional roles.

Govinda: The film industry is Amitji. We are lucky that we have a star of his stature who can teach us so much. We are no one to give him suggestions what he should do or not do with his career. In fact, we should be taking suggestions from him on how to make our film careers as successful as his. Had I not got a chance to work with him, my personality would not have grown so much.

Star wars

You thought catfights and feuds took place only between younger actors driven by insecurities for media hype? Think again.

When veterans like Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha start taking potshots at each other in print and on blogsites, dishing out verbal insults to each others’ families too, then you realise that warring stars could belong to any age group. Look at Pooja Bedi and Celina Jaitely involved in a war of words that’s even going to court, or Tanushree Dutta’s spat with Nana Patekar both became fodder for gossip magazines and news channels. And those weren’t the only feuding stars.

Viveik Oberoi for example is the most verbally battered man whose once spat with Salman Khan cost him allies in the industry. Shah Rukh Khan’s on-off relationship with Amitabh Bachchan is always in the news, while Aamir had to literally eat his words and apologise to the Big Bachchan after criticising the latter in a blogsite. The list of stars/filmmakers at loggerheads with each other Sanjay Dutt and Sanjay Gupta, Rani Mukerji-Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan-Kareena Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor-Ameesha Patel, Salman Khan-John Abraham, Bipasha-Basu-Katrina Kaif, SRK-Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Salman Khan Himesh Reshammiya is long and ever growing.

And considering the film industry is sharply divided in camps, with several power centres created, ego clashes are part of the game. Instances of ‘frenemies’ (friends turned enemies) is on the rise in Bollywood. What goes wrong between two individuals who used to get along amicably until small misunderstandings were blown out of proportion? Is it because film stars have fragile egos and can’t handle mutual criticism sportingly? Or is it also because big stars can’t take competition from younger stars who are a threat to them professionally?

After Shahid Kapoor, it’s Amitabh Bachchan who has injured himself.

Big B, who was shooting for Aladdin, injured himself while doing some action scenes. He wrote on his blog, “I have injured myself during the action shoot of Aladdin. It’s the back and the hip some internal strain. Have been in and out of hospitals and MRI machines.”

And next day, he posted another blog. “My injury seems to have taken up more space than I imagined it would. But, your generosity and concern for my health is so endearing and warm. Thank you for it. I repair. But very gradually. It keeps coming back and I keep drugging myself with painkillers.” Here’s wishing him a speedy recovery!
