Amitabh Bachchan
AB’s Baby, Abhishek Bachchan, rode some high-tech, mean machines while shooting for Dhoom and its sequel.
Now it’s Pa Bachchan’s turn to indulge in some dhoom dhadaka. The actor par excellence tried his hand at some snazzy bike riding while shooting for his next film, Bhoothnath.
About the experience, Big B said, “I’m not very comfortable with bikes, even though I’ve had to do some rather ridiculous operations with them in some of my films the side car in Sholay, wild histrionics on Marine Drive for Muqaddar Ka Sikander, some intricate stuff on the steps to the church in Bandra in Suhaag, and not to forget the one-handed, accelerator wire-in-the-mouth riding in Roti Kapda aur Makaan. Grave risks, but happily concluded without incident. In Bhoothnath, on the Goa city roads with a whole bunch of us and an excited Banku (the child artist) on the back seat, it was tough at 66 to manage the energy required for the shot. But I handled it.”
From the classic bike in Sholay to the complex speed machine in this film, Amitabh described the journey so far as having been a jubilant one. “It has been the most joyous ride,” he said, “The road hasn’t entirely been smooth. There have been bumps and pot-holes, road diversions and traffic jams, but they’ve all added to this wonderful experience called life.”

Yesterday’s Hitlist story ‘AB tera kya hoga, Basu?’ has created a stir in B-Town. Director Anurag Basu in a Stardust interview maintained that it was time Amitabh Bachchan retire gracefully. This has led to the big debate whether the Big B should quit or not.Though most film folk maintain that making such a statement is outrageous, there are also whispers that he should. Though no one wants to be named, a director on condition of annoymity says, “Amitabh Bachchan has now become an internet blogger. He only has energy and time left for the blog he has started now. I feel that he should let acting be now.”But for the rest, Big B should never retire. Read on what filmfolk say….
Anil Kapoor
The stench of this arrogant statement is unbearable. The man has stooped to unimaginable low levels to display what, he alone knows. Amitji is Amitji eternal and forever.
Hema Malini
He can never retire. Every film of his is a learning experience for all generations of actors. I want Mr Bachchan around for many years for a selfish reason he’s the only leading man who suits me ha, ha!
Ram Gopal Varma
Anurag Basu has directed two to three films. For him to comment on Mr Bachchan just makes me feel sorry for Mr Basu. He didn’t like him in Aag, I myself didn’t like Mr Bachchan in some films. If he failed in Aag or any other film it’s the director’s failure to use him properly. I can’t understand what prompted this tirade. More than him I am angry with Mr Bachchan for reacting to Mr Basu. Please don’t undermine your status by reacting to small fries like me and Mr Basu. As the old saying goes, when an elephant walks dogs bark!

Q Despite the debacle of your films such Nishabd and Aag with Ram Gopal Varma, were you not skeptical of working with him again in Sarkar Raj?
I had no doubts at all. I always had great faith in Ramu as a director. Both Nishabd and Aag were very challenging roles for me and I was gratified. Every actor and director goes through a phase of ups and downs. There isn?t a single producer or director in the world who has not faced criticism. But sometimes my personal satisfaction as an artiste also needs to be looked at. I had to search within myself. I would rather learn from failure than succumb to it. Ramu was generous enough to apologise publicly but I don?t think he was wrong. Nobody in this world is perfect.
Q In the last few months how have you coped with the numerous controversies that surrounded you?
If you are a public figure, you have to be prepared tolerate all this. As a star I know I will be questioned and written about and criticised. I do not think we should take objection to it. Many times I have felt that the mood and intent with which I have spoken to an interviewer were different when it is reproduced. It must be the acumen of the interviewer to be able to represent that mood in his interview. Sometimes I felt cheated that I was not given an opportunity to clarify it because it was not what I intended to say. I think we should have a platform to be able to respond to it like the media has. Now have a wonderful alternative in the form of blogs, to express ourselves and challenge it.
Q So will you be posting regularly on the blog?
Yes, it is keeping me awake till very late in the night and my fingers hurt because I do not have any assistance at the moment. But it has been a great revelation. I never realised that there were so many people who were interested in talking to me. This is a new medium and I have almost 80 pages of posts and each page has 10-20 letters. I do not know how I am going to handle it, but I want to be able to address all of them. My father was a great responder to mail. He used to respond to every letter in his own handwriting and post them daily. I am going to try and respond to as many queries as possible and I hope I live up to my father?s mode of operation. I am a common man and I am in a medium which involves the masses.
