For the first time the entire Indian Panorama package outside the purview of the International Film Festival of India will be showcased in Kolkata between 15 and 20 March and on 26 and 27 March.
“Presented in collaboration with Nandan, West Bengal Film Centre, film lovers will get to watch 21 feature and 15 non-feature films,” announced Ms Neelam Kapur, additional director general, Directorate of Film Festivals, ministry of information and broadcasting.
The ‘mini film festival’ promotes Indian cinema in its diversity. Usually the films showcased here are screened in the Goa festival and abroad. An exception has been made and after the Kolkata showcasing, the package travels to Bangalore and New Delhi. The Indian Panorama seeks out new talent and presents films that are not often screened across India. “Usually Indian cinema gets to be defined by certain pockets. The Indian Panorama goes beyond that,” Ms Kapur said.
Festival of Indian Panorama 2007 Films opens with Bagher Bacha, a non-feature film in Bengali, directed by Bishnu Dev Halder, an ex-student of the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute. The opening film of the feature film section is Ore Kadal (Malayalam), directed by Shyamaprasad. Debut directors whose films are to be screened include Sameer Hanchate, Bhavna Talwar and Samir Chanda. And among stalwarts are Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Budhadeb Dasgupta. In the non-feature section ‘biographies’ like Naushad Ali, Pandit Ramnarayan, Mubarak Begum and Rajarshi Bhagyachandra of Manipur chronicle the lives of important Indian personalities.
Entry is free of cost and on a first-come, first-serve basis. Invitations are available at the Nandan ticket counter.

Kareena said, “I am not thin. The media makes me out to be. I don’t diet. One look at me and you know I am quite healthy.”
Despite collapsing and crash dieting, Kareena still manages to make her self glow, we might think the result is because of her relationship with Saif, but the actress retorts, “It is the success of my films that’s making my skin glow.”
