TZP pulls at Indian heartstrings

TZP pulls at Indian heartstrings

A moving story about a special child’s struggle to cope has set audiences thinking — am I my child’s enemy? Ostensibly, Taare Zameen Par (Stars on Earth) is about a small boy suffering from the learning disability dyslexia. But it is also a commentary on a world in which heavy parental expectations and academic competition have meant a steady rise in depression, dysfunctional lifestyles and even suicide among Indian students. In the film, eight-year-old Ishaan Awasthi inhabits a hyper imaginative world of colours, dogs and planetary wars, where he collects gutter fish in his school waterbottle and talks to trees, while his classmates toil for better grades. A misfit who is humiliated and pushed around in school and shouted at at home, Ishaan is packed off to a boarding school to be disciplined — seen by him as a final act of rejection by his family. There, he fails to improve, withdraws further into his shell and finally on the brink — in one moving scene he stares down a cliff suggesting his suicidal inclination — a chance encounter with a sensitive art teacher alters his life. Aimed at parents Taare is a rarity from Bollywood, an industry that is known to churn out stereotypical, hyperbolic love lore or revenge sagas, but which now is being forced by a maturing audience to think out of the box. As a result, more Indian filmmakers today tackle themes as diverse as dysfunctional urban lives and politics to crime and physical disability. Taare’s director, Aamir Khan, one of Bollywood’s top screen stars who also plays Ishaan’s sensitive teacher, hopes the film will enhance adults’ understanding of children. “It is aimed primarily at parents, and potential parents. Youngsters who in a few years will become parents,” Khan, a perfectionist who is sometimes compared by critics to Hollywood’s Tom Hanks, wrote on his blog to promote the movie.Taare has opened to packed houses and trade analysts see it as a major hit in an otherwise dull 2007. The film pulls at the heartstrings and leaves most viewers moist-eyed, as they relate to Ishaan’s struggle to survive in an unrelenting world he cannot identify with and which spares him no understanding. Critics have recommended Taare as a must-see for parents, wondering if many among the audiences were not guilty of quashing their child’s dreams and turning them into assembly line zombies.

Jodhaa Akbar gets clearance by Madhya Pradesh HC

Jodhaa Akbar gets clearance by Madhya Pradesh HCMadhya Pradesh High Court has given some relief to Ronnie Screwvala and Ashutosh Gowarikar as it declared to eliminate the ban on Jodhaa Akbar in the state. Earlier this week, the distributors decided to take legal help against MP Government’s ban on the movie. MP Government had banned Jodhaa Akbar claiming that they wanted to avoid any kind of Law & Order problem over screening of it. Speaking on the verdict issued, Ashutosh welcomed the verdict with relief and admiration for the High Court judgment. He said that, “The film portrays love between two cultures and religions through a marriage of alliance between a Mughal emperor and a Rajput princess. This is an alliance that took place 450 years ago; an alliance that we need to respect, admire and learn from even today. He also adds that a disclaimer had been inserted at the start of the film saying that the film is a work of fiction and it draws from history but at the same time it is not the exact representation of it and there can be other viewpoints”.

Subhash Ghai on Main Yuvraj and Black & White

Subhash Ghai on Main Yuvraj and Black & WhiteWe will have two films from you this year- Black and White and Main Yuvraaj. You have returned to direction and how! (Smiles) Yes, I have Black and White and Main Yuvraaj. • Tell us about the two films.
Since long, I wanted to make a film with a social message. Black and White is just that. It’s an issue-based film on terrorism. After making so many commercial entertainers, I wanted to make a film which will make people think. As for Main Yuvraaj, it will be a bit early to reveal the plot. But I’m enjoying making it as much as I did all my other films in the past. • Is it true that the newcomer Anurag Sinha has got more footage in Black and White and Anil Kapoor is miffed?
God, these stories! You know what, whenever a film is about to release, some mischief mongers surface and try to create controversies. Believe me, Anil told me on the sets that Anurag is a fine actor who we should support and encourage. Yes, the newcomer has a very important role, but having said that, the film is about two characters — Anil and Anurag. Anil is my friend, an actor and a star. He is one guy who has withstood the onslaught of the younger brigade of the late ’90s and the early part of this decade. Why should he be miffed?

• What is your take on your film Karz being remade with Himesh Reshammiya in the lead?

have no issues. In fact, I willingly sold off the rights to T-Series. I had no problems simply because T-Series assured me that it will be an absolute remake. So what’s wrong?

• But remakes don’t run…

Let’s not generalise. It’s too early to comment. Didn’t the remake of Devdas, starring Shah Rukh Khan, do well?

TZP: Aamir’s biggest grosser ever

TZP: Aamir’s biggest grosser everIt is a well-known fact that post the criticism and brickbats that Dharamesh Darshan’s MELA (2000) received, Aamir Khan has become extremely selective. And that has turned out to be a correct and career defining decision, seeing Aamir’s almost cent per cent success record (barring an average MANGAL PANDEY). It will come as a surprise to many, who are not very box-office savvy that Aamir Khan’s RAJA HINDUSTANI (1996) is his biggest universal blockbuster, till date, based on its superb run across every circuit of India. While RAJA HINDUSTANI netted around 50 crores from India, the only recent Aamir movie to break that long standing record is Yash Raj’s FANAA (2006), which netted close to 55 crores from India (without Gujarat). The good news is that Aamir Khan’s directorial debut venture, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR, has surpassed FANAA and is likely to end its run with around 60 crores, just from India. For the records, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR has so far netted around 59 crores from India, as of this week. Well, TZP’s performance is amazing (considering its subject and slow start), and we are qu
