Chhodon Naa Yaar - Chhodon Naa Yaar - The adventure begins
[Friday, September 21, 2007]

What happens when the road you tread turns out to be a road to nowhere? What happens when your biggest adventure turns into your biggest nightmare? What happens when you realize that you have met a road bock which is a point of no return?

Ravi [Jimmy Sheirgill], Shiv [Kabir Sadanand] and Sunny [Farid Amri] had a lot to answer but they had got themselves into a situation that they had themselves opted for. And wasn’t it one dangerous and scary situation?

Final year students of Mass Communication in Delhi University, Ravi, Shiv and Sunny wanted to do something different for their college project. While the world around them made documentaries on poverty, prostitution or politics, they decided to choose adventure as their subject.

Together, they decided to shoot a film in the Northern hills of India where a deadly myth prevailed. Unaware about the fact that this very myth could change their lives forever, they set out into the jungles in their endeavor of doing something different, exciting and to an extent dangerous.

There were people who discouraged them from taking such drastic steps. Amongst these were Ravi’s girlfriend Rashmi [Kim Sharma] and his professor Saxena [Ahmed Khan]. They had severe doubts about the practicality of choosing such a subject but the trio had different plans. Treating everything that came their way as a part of fun in their lives, they moved on to explore the world.

And now they would regret it forever!

That’s because no sooner did their adventure begin, they realized that they had committed the biggest mistake of their lives. The myth of the jungle started turning out to be true and now their own lives were endangered.

How would they come out of the situation? And would they live to tell the tale?

Produced by Sameer Gaikwad and directed by Dilip Sood, CHHODON NAA YAAR which releases on 21st September has Shyam Kaushal’s action as it’s highlight with Anand Raj Anand composing the film’s music.

Dil Dosti Etc - A Black Comedy
[Thursday, September 20, 2007]

If you have been through a college life, you would know that there are two things which interest one most (well, if one leaves studies aside) - giving your ‘dil’ away and getting into ‘dosti’ with your college mates. And then there is a little bit of ‘etc.’ too which adds spice to the life!

This is what director Manish Tiwary aspires to tell in his debut venture DIL DOSTI ETC. which deals with love and life of college going youngsters.

Sanjay Mishra [Shreyas Talpade] and Apurv [Imaad Shah] are two such youngsters who study in Delhi University. And yes, they are poles apart!

Apurv belongs to cosmopolitan Delhi, Sanjay hails from Bihar
Apurv is the son of Mr. Richie Rich, Sanjay belongs to middle class
Apurv is trying to find his bearings; Sanjay has his eyes set on a political career
Apurv has a prostitute and a school girl in his life, Sanjay has a hep aspiring model falling for him

The prostitute, school girl and model have their own stories to tell.

The prostitute Vaisali [Smriti Mishra] has never got emotionall attached to her countless customers. Would Apurv be the one?

School girl Kintu [Ishitta Sharrma] knows Apurv is flirting with her but she makes sure that she takes her own time before she takes a decision? Would she finally say yes?

Model Prerna [Nikita Anand] was paving her way into modeling circuits. Would she take a different road and instead walk with Sanjay?

Realistic cinema sprinkled with black comedy, DIL DOSTI ETC. comes with a basic thought - “When you are young, you believe, the possibilities are endless… “. And what could these possibilities be if things like love, betrayal, greed, friendship, voyeurism and sexual perversion come your way?

With a story and screenplay which promises to be as original as it gets, DIL DOSTI ETC. is touted as a film which tells a new tale differently by “not just showing the coming of age of only a young man but also explores the ambiguities and pre-occupations of an entire generation.”

Produced by Prakash Jha, DIL DOSTI ETC. has music by Siddharth-Suhas and Agnee and is releasing all over on 28th September.

Manorama Six Feet Under - An addition to noir genre

Manorama Six Feet Under - An addition to noir genre
[Thursday, September 20, 2007]

Whatever be the career progression of Abhay Deol, one thing is for sure that he is one young guy who wants to do things different from ordinary. His repertoire of films like SOCHA NA THA, AHISTA AHISTA, HONEYMOON TRAVELS PTVT. LTD., EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL and now MANORAMA SIX FEET UNDER more than proves that.

A twisted thriller narrated in noir format, the film has yet another debutant director (nothing new for Abhay though!), Navdeep Singh, at the helm. He sets the film in Rajasthan and attaches an interesting tagline to the film - In the desert, nothing is what it seems!

This is what brings an interesting angle to this film which comes with a unique plot. That’s because one gets an impression there and then that this is not going to be an ordinary cinematic outing. Especially so when a film has a middle class Government Engineer as a lead protagonist who also dabbles in writing detective stories. He is Satyaveer Singh, in short SV [Abhay Deol], who is trying to keep his interest alive in creating detective fiction in spite of a flop novel named ‘Manorama’ behind him.

Even as he and his wife Nimmi [Gul Panag] try to make their ends meet with him working as an Engineer and also writing occasional mystery stories for magazines and his wife running a beauty parlor, deep inside SV still nurtures ambitions of doing something big in the world of mystery and intrigue.

He gets an opportunity to do that when Mrs. P.P. Rathod [Sarika] approaches him with a case. The subject? Spy on her husband Mr. P.P. Rathod [Kulbhushan Kharbanda]! Was it going to be an easy job? Certainly not because Rathod was not one ordinary man. He was a local politician who could sense someone acting smart form a large distance.

Nevertheless, SV accepts the challenge and does his job convincingly. End of story? Not yet. Because soon he realized that during this act of his, he was himself involved in a world which comprised of deceit, power, greed and a murder most foul.

Mrs. P.P. Rathod was found dead. But this itself was not the most troublesome factor in SV’s life. Instead he also realized that she was not actually whom she claimed to be. She was someone else and the world seemed a lot different from what it appeared from a distance. He also had to find out the role that Inspector Brijmohan [Vinay Pathak] and Sheetal [Raima Sen] had to play in the entire episode!

SV had to solve this mystery. And he had to do this for his own benefit because his own life was threatened by the ongoing happenings.

Would he be able to find out the truth?

Produced by Shemaroo Entertainment with music by Jayesh Gandhi and Raiomond Mirza, MANORAMA SIX FEET UNDER releases all over this Friday i.e. 21st September.

Lions of Punjab Presents - A ‘reality’ comedy

Lions of Punjab Presents - A ‘reality’ comedy

[Thursday, September 20, 2007]

Last two years have seen a remarkable change in the way television entertainment has taken a different route. While the ’saas-bahu’ sagas still run, ‘reality shows’ have started creating their own web. With every entertainment channel coming up with a talent hunt show, it was imperative that a film around this theme was also made soon.

LOINS OF PUNJAB PRESENTS is one such film.

As per producer-director Manish Acharya, he got the idea to make the film when he was sitting in a crowded coffee shop in New York with a close friend of his. He says, “While discussing the newfound Western interest in all things Bollywood, the idea for this film came to us — a singing contest set in a small town in New Jersey. We laughed as we outlined possible characters, and I realized that I REALLY wanted to see this movie. Ironically, given my proximity to it, today I might be the only person incapable of really seeing THIS movie.”

He adds, “The movie reflects my beliefs and my concerns. Issues of belonging, of defining “home,” of self-image — these are on the top of my mind. And the manifestation of these issues through a comedy, through songs, through characters that don’t normally populate cinema screens, seems like the appropriate way to both include my concerns in my work and make them invisible. Perhaps most importantly, when I watch the film, the characters in the movie come alive for me. And just as I once breathed life into them, they now breathe life into me.”

90 minutes in duration, LOINS OF PUNJAB PRESENTS is touted to be a riotous comedy about seven strangers whose lives collide during a singing contest in a small New Jersey town. These seven people are a ruthless philanthropist, a bhangra rapper, an over-protected prodigy, a reckless actress, a lovelorn businessman, an entrepreneurial yogi and last but not the least, a Loin King.

Said to be one of the first films to combine the musical vibrancy of a Bollywood film with a narrative rhythm that emerges from the West, LOINS OF PUNJAB PRESENTS is termed as ‘Monsoon Wedding’ meets Annie Hall, in a diner in Queens, for a masala omelette!

LOINS OF PUNJAB PRESENTS stars National Award winner and International star Shabana Azmi (Fire, Arth, City of Joy) along with Broadway & West End lead Ayesha Dharker (Bombay Dreams, Star Wars Episode II, The Terrorist) & American Indie favorite Ajay Naidu (Office Space, Suburbia, Bad Santa), in addition to various theatre and TV luminaries like Jameel Khan, Darshan Jariwala & Michael Raimondi.

Manish Acharya has the last word - “I do know that it wouldn’t embarrass me to ask people to spend 90 minutes of their life to see it. It is entertaining, it rewards repeat viewings, and it stays with the viewer long after the movie is over. And that makes me happy.”

Also starring Seema Rahmani, Ishita Sharma, Kunal Roy Kapoor along with Acharya himself, the film is releasing on 21st September.

Dhol - Come, face the music
[Thursday, September 20, 2007]

Trust Priyadarshan to come up with films with alarming regularity which combine comedy with thrills, action and total ‘masti’ and ‘dhamaal’. Ever since HERA PHERI, none of his comedies have failed and DHOL is expected to take the trend further.

DHOL is about four young men Sameer a.k.a Sam (Tusshar Kapoor), Pankaj a.k.a. Pakkya (Sharman Joshi), Markand a.k.a. Maru (Rajpal Yadav) and Gautam a.k.a. Goti (Kunal Khemu). Together they have only one motto - Enjoy life without working hard to build it on!

While building castles in the air, their dream is to get rich without making any active effort to reach their goal. Aimless but good at heart, they are four friends who live life on their own terms, even if they get flak from everyone who has ever cared for them.

At one juncture of life, they come across Kanchan [Tanushree Dutta] and they start believing that they had found a key to living a happy life forever. Reason? Kanchan is a rich girl and marrying her would mean marrying her wealth.

However, the trouble was that only one of them could marry her!

Soon starts the quartet’s endeavor to come up with a fool proof plan which could get them closer to Kanchan. But was Kanchan really what she seemed? Or was there a secret lurking somewhere?

Was there a truth waiting to be told? And when this truth would be revealed, will Sam, Pakkya, Maru and Goti mend their ways?

With dollops of humor, confusion, thrills, crime, murder and suspense waiting to be unfolded in this roller coaster ride, DHOL also has a ‘dhol’ playing an integral part of the film along with a ‘dadaji’ [Om Puri] and a night club performer [Payal Rohatgi].

With regulars like Murli Sharma, Rasika Joshi, Asrani and Tiku Talsania in tow, DHOL has music by Pritam and is seeing a wide release this Friday i.e. 21st September.

Come, face the music!
