Cash - Have money, have fun
[ Monday, July 23, 2007]

Paisa phenko, tamasha dekho

Words from the title song of CASH are good enough to describe what the film is going to be all about. Have money, have fun. No money, then earn it to have fun! Because cash is what makes the world go left, right and center.

Left, right and center - this is how the world of master conman Ajay Devgan also looked like.

As someone who was at the center of one of the biggest robberies ever that was soon to take place, he had to rope in two young men. The men who would be on his left and right and undertake the job for him - Riteish Deshmukh and Zayed Khan. But as the saying goes, sometimes the left hand doesn’t know what the one on the right is doing! Same was the case with Riteish and Zayed, as they hardly realized the existence of each other in this masterpiece of a crime that was about to happen.

Existence? But weren’t they buddies once upon a time? Probably yes, but then a girl [Dia Mirza] came in their life which drifted them apart. Both loved her but she loved only one of them. Solution? She walks out of their lives as she can’t tell the other guy that she didn’t love him.

Meanwhile Ajay had a different problem. He was a conman, yes. He was a criminal, yes. He was a smooth operator, yes. But then he was also a lover.

A lover who by the stroke of luck had a ‘Head of Security’ at the Indian embassy, Cape town, as his girlfriend [Shamita Shetty].

As a responsible officer, her job was to make sure that there was no mishap when the diamonds were transported to the airport. But then what was so special about these diamonds? Well, this was a set of three unique diamonds worth Rs. 100 crores which were mined more than 200 years back in India and had traveled around the world after reaching the hands of mafia in 1986. The trouble was that out of the three, one was still missing and the mafia head now wanted the third to reach him too.

The mafia head entrusts his most trusted lieutenant to do the job. He further passes on the responsibility to Ajay, who agrees to carry out the robbery knowing little about the real content of what he had to rob.

The game begins. But did it end with the robbery? No ways!

Once the robbery is carried out, Ajay realizes that he has put his own love into trouble. As the Head of Security, she was accountable for the safe passage of diamond. And now, she is after the person who got her into trouble.

Ajay now has to do one bigger job. Along with Riteish and Zayed, he has to put the diamond back into the embassy. And he had to do that fast before the police (and of course Shamita) get to know about the people behind the robbery!

How will he do this? Will he forego all the cash he could have had? Or will it be the power of cash that would make him and his team carries out a super-cool crime once again? Was stealing indeed the toughest way to become rich?

Three diamonds, two heists, four murders, one double-cross, one double-crosser who is triple-crossed, one misunderstanding, one fatal error called trust and beneath it all, friendship and love. Welcome to a world ‘Of the cash’, ‘By the cash’, ‘For the cash’.

Also starring Suneil Shetty and Esha Deol, CASH is directed by Anubhav Sinha and is aiming at a 27th July release.

26th July at Barista - - The day when man challenged destiny
[Monday, July 23, 2007]

Realistic films, if treated with an element of commercial ingredients, have a great potential to create an impact on audience. SHOOTOUT AT LOKHANDWALA, COMPANY and SATYA are some of the examples that one can remember. Each of these films have lifted elements from real life with the script being thoroughly inspired by the actual happenings.

26TH JULY AT BARISTA takes the trend further with the only difference being that while the aforementioned films were centered on underworld, this one picks up it’s story from a natural disaster that had struck Mumbai exactly 2 years back.

Year 2006. Date - 26th July.

The day when rains lashed Mumbai like never before and took away many a lives
The day when it was hard to imagine how something as cruel as this could happen to a city that was always vibrant
The day when the spirit of Mumbai was revealed for an umpteenth time as young and old, men and women, rich and poor - everyone came together to help each other

The day which even today is remembered by all and makes one salute the spirit of togetherness and spirit of Mumbai!

The film is set in the coffee shot Barista where people were having just yet another round of coffee while chatting up with friends and generally having good times. The film’s lead pair met there as well, though as complete strangers. Little did they know that the incidents that would occur on this day would change their lives forever.

The rain never stopped and soon it was loud and clear that nothing could stop a calamity from taking place. There was apprehension, fear and sorrow all around. No one knew what could be the course of action but then when has ever been the case when Mumbaikars have just sat down with their hands all tied?

The people in Barista rose up to the challenge and started taking measures to save not just themselves but even the people on the street. They had to overcome this challenge. By any means. But how?

Sheer spirit followed by determination and will-power make them all come together and change the path that destiny had designed for them. Did they succeed?

Starring Kabir Sawhney and Simran Vaid, 26TH JULY AT BARISTA has lyrics and music by Sandarbh with Mohan Sharma at the helm of direction. The film is planned for 3rd August release.

Gandhi My Father - Whose wounds are bigger?

Gandhi My Father - Whose wounds are bigger?
[Monday, July 16, 2007]

There have been number of films made in the last couple of decades which have revolved around Father of The Nation - Mahatma Gandhi. While most of them have primarily been centered on his fight for the country’s freedom, a few have also delved into his personal life. GANDHI MY FATHER is different since this is the first film that extensively talks about his relation with his eldest son Harilal.

The film’s essence lies in its very tagline that clearly outlines the subject which producer Anil Kapoor wanted to bring alive on screen -

“To people he was a father, To his son he was a father he never had”

The message is quite clear. The relationship shared between Gandhiji and Harilal was torrid to say the least with the issues that probably never came out in open. While Gandhiji was fighting for the country, he had his own inner battles to fight.

This was a fight that saw him loosing his own son. This was a fight that saw him being rebuked by his own son. This was a fight that forced him to disown his own son.

What was the reason behind that?

What made Harilal first embrace Islam as a rebellion and then later reconvert to Hinduism as a penance?
Why couldn’t Gandhiji keep the emotions of his own son in check when he had an entire nation surrendering their emotions to him?
What was it that hurt Harilal so much that while his father paved the way of prosperity for the nation, he himself lived the life of a beggar?
What went so wrong between the two that while the entire world respected him as a great force, his own son turned out to be so weak that he walked the road of being an alcoholic?

Meanwhile Gandhiji made sure that in spite of all the personal, social and political struggles, he put his principles and quest for human dignity above everything else!

Of course there were wounds but wasn’t it difficult to measure that whose wounds were bigger - Gandhiji’s or Harilal’s?

Come, watch the drama unfold in one of the most prestigious films ever to be coming from the world of Bollywood. With Darshan Zariwala donning the role of Gandhiji and Akshaye Khanna bringing Harilal to life, GANDHI MY FATHER also stars Shefali Chhaya as Kasturba Gandhi and Bhumika Chawla as Gulab Gandhi, Harilal’s wife.

Directed by Feroz Abbas Khan, GANDHI MY FATHER releases all over on 3rd August.

Marigold - When love comes unexpectedly
[Friday, July 13, 2007]

“Real life is not a Bollywood movie”, exclaims the leading lady of the film MARIGOLD. Well, this is what exactly happens to her the moment she embarks on her journey to India!

In her dream she would have never imagined that she would find love (and life) thousands of miles away from her country. But this is what happens with Marigold Lexton [Ali Larter], a young American actress who is brought to Indian shores due to her Hollywood assignment.

The shooting of her film goes kaput as lack of funds result in her being stranded in India. And now she has nowhere to go. Well, with a foul mood, high attitude and demanding persona like her, it was quite obvious that she would have found few takers in the tinsel world.

Until help comes in the form of Rani [Suchitra Pillai] who comes to her rescue. Her first friend in India, she helps her find a way and soon a small role in a Bollywood musical. A film that stars superstar Raj [Vikas Bhalla] and diva Shazia [Simone Singh]. With both stars truly having starry airs and tantrums to boast, it was nothing short of a miserable life for Marigold. While Raj considered himself as a God’s gift to mankind [women to be precise], for reigning queen Shazia, the world revolved around her.

Working with such a team was hardly what Marigold would have ever imagined and it would have been pack up time for herself if not for one man.

Prem

A handsome choreographer who was sincere, modest and down to earth, he had a charm around him which was unmistakable and irresistible.

Prem taught Marigold quite a few things. And Bollywood dancing was just one of those many things. Because apart from shaking a leg or two, he also made her realize what true love was all about. She finds love. And now she it was impossible for her to let it go.

Meanwhile for Prem as well Marigold was more than just finding love. For him, it was also finding life. Because it was during the moments spent with Marigold that he realized the wide distance between him and his family.

Belonging to a royal family, he had left everything behind due to differences with his father Mahendra [Vijendra Ghatge]. Now as his mother Nandini [Kiran Juneja Sippy] was looking at him settling down with Janvi [Nandana Sen], a US educated pretty girl, Prem was on crossroads.

A series of misunderstandings later, Marigold decides to leave Prem for Janvi and move on in life but destiny had other plans set for her. Janvi explains to her that Prem was always Marigold’s. In the meanwhile Marigold’s boyfriend Barry [Ian Bohen] also pays her a visit from US.

What would Marigold do?

Also starring Helen, Gulshan Grover and Rakesh Bedi, Marigold is a musical comedy with Shankar Ehsan Loy composing for the film. This international project sees a worldwide release on 17th August.

Buddha Mar Gaya - Save the news from the world
[Thursday, July 12, 2007]

Dead man walking. That could well be the state that LK [Anupam Kher] suffers (or shall we say, enjoy?) in BUDDHA MAR GAYA.

As India’s premier industrialist, he rose from being a humble scrap seller over the years. Hence the name LK, which is short and sweet for ‘Laxmikant Kabadiya’.

Now a construction mogul, he had all the riches and luxuries of his life. He had everything that he ever wanted - wealth, name, fame and babes. The only factor which was going against him? Age!

And it was this age factor that said goodbye to him in one of the most beautiful (and entertaining) moments of his life! A romp on the bed with a struggling starlet [Rakhi Sawant] proved to be too much for him as he died in the middle of the act.

But guess what, he died as a happy man. And the smile on his dead face pretty much reflected the sheer happiness he enjoyed moments before he left his body behind.

Well, apart from his dead body, he also left quite a few other things behind. Apart from an entire empire, he also left behind his spinster twin sister Prerna, two sons Ranjeet and Sameer, their wives Shruti and Anju, Ranjeet daughters Sanjana and Namrata, and Sameer’s son, Pawan. And all they wanted was their own pie of his immense wealth.

But there was an issue!

A Rs. 5000 crore worth IPO was up for the grabs but for that one basic fact had to be hidden from the world.

The fact that LK was dead.
The fact which could prove to be undoing of LK’s empire.
The fact that would have put Rs. 5000 crore worth IPO in limbo.

What would the family do? They turn over to their family Guru Vidyut Baba [Om Puri] for advice. An advice he does give, though it comes with it’s own difficulties and expected trouble.

To the world LK had to be projected as someone who was still kicking and alive. And this drama had to be enacted for the next 2 days till the shares are out. But then, would it be an easy task to accomplish?

LK was a celebrity who met dozens of people a day. He was a man whose signatures were required on important documents every hour. He was someone who was a public figure and had to be present at number of places at the same time.

How could someone like LK be kept away from the public and media gaze?

But greed presided over all trouble and the family sets itself out on achieving the impossible. A roller coaster ride ensues and everyone from an inquisitive and greedy servant, the Prime Minister’s fixer, a procurer of dead bodies, the paparazzi to a couple of cops who get themselves involved in this ‘tamasha’!

All in order to let the world ‘not’ know that ‘buddha mar gaya’!

Directed by Rahul Rawail who also co-produces the film with Sunil Lulla, the film also stars Paresh Rawal, Mahabanoo Mody-Kotwal, Ranvir Shorey, Mukesh Tiwari, Murli Sharma and Mona Ambegaonkar along with Mannat Kaur, Madhvi Singh, Heenaa Biswas, Jay Soni, Deepika Sharma, Jitender Bhargava and Bobby Parvez.

The film is releasing all over on 17th August.
