It’s A Season Of Spats In Bollywood!

Minus RanDeep - tagged as Bollywood’s current ‘it’ couple with their public lip-lock grabbing eye-balls recently, the rest of tinsel town is singing strains of separation. It’s the season of spats for most of Bollywood.

Right from the much publicised love stories of Salman Khan-Katrina Kaif, Harman Baweja-Priyanka Chopra and Saif Ali Khan-Kareena Kapoor to the hush-hush liaisons of Shilpa Shetty-Raj Kundra and Soha Ali Khan-Siddharth - most couples seem to be treading the path to splitsville.

From Saif’s much hyped tattoo, Katrina’s visit to Ajmer Sharif to pray for beau Salman, Kareena playing mommy to Saif’s kids, Abraham and Sara to Salman and Harman throwing surprise parties to woo their ladies…the tinselville dikkat seems to be pyaar kiya to darna kya!

But, there’s a flip side to the mushy business too.

Bollywood’s Half-Year Crisis

Despite the big banner headlines talking about Bollywood money buying into Hollywood, things are not going too well on the ground floor in Mumbai at the moment.

The first six months of 2008 have been a disaster with only three or four movies that could be considered commercial hits at this point – Race, Jannat, Jodhaa Akbar and to a slightly lesser extent, Sarkar Raj. With a total investment at this stage of 3 crores and a return of only 1.5 crores, this is not going to keep the accountants happy. It’s possible that other movies will climb into the black over time with DVD sales and downloads an increasingly large part of the market, but this is only likely to buy the producers a little time.

Subhash K Jha speaks about Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic (TPTM) is not a great work of art. It doesn’t cause ripples of revolution across the cinematic stratosphere. It does something even better. It makes you feel warm and comforted about the quality of contemporary life. No matter how awful things seem, there is always that core of goodness in the human heart to count on. This one makes you count your blessings.

Kunal Kohli taps that noble core, so elusive in our cinema. The last film, which was as nobly intended as TPTM, was Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Swades. And Gowarikar for all his acute sensitivity and storytelling acumen was awfully out of breath dealing with the child actor in Swades. Kohli is delightly at-ease with his four child actors who have been selected not for their overt cuteness but their propensity to play the characters that they’re allotted with restrain and understanding.

Each of the four brats, forced by law to come and live with the man who accidentally killed their parents, sparkle with a spontaneous credibility. Kohli treats the kids as young adults. And he treats the audience with as much respect. He gives us what we apparently want (emotions, laughter, drama). But he makes sure his plot doesn’t become a slave to conventional prescriptions. It’s not easy to desist from using a patronizing tone for the children when they are orphans trapped in an adult situation that they don’t understand. Kohli does a fantasy-spin where the sassy and spiffy words and storytelling offset the quaint Arcadian story of the four orphans and a cantankerous tycoon who we soon discover is constantly unhappy on account of a girlfriend who only talks about designer clothes and Sunita Menon.

Saif Ali Khan to play a terrorist

When it comes to the choice of roles, Saif Ali Khan has done a variety of them from chocolate lover boy to the mean ‘Langra Tyagi’ in ‘Omkara’. And now, he has been offered a very challenging role indeed- the role of a terrorist. The film is written and is to be directed by Rensil D’Silva, who is the script writer of the block buster “Rang De Basanti”. The script was liked by Karan Johar so much, that he has agreed to produce it. And to add spice to the meaty offer, Saif will be romancing her new found passion, Kareena Kapoor herself.

Says a source close to the film,

“The story is a far cry from the usual Karan’s films. There will be no designer glam sham or naach gaana. It is a hard-hitting subject. Karan loved Rensil’s script so much that he decided to produce it. He also gave Rensil the freedom to choose the actors to justify his script. That’s how Rensil decided to cast Saif. He plays a meticulous and urban-educated terrorist. There is also an interesting romantic track between him and the leading lady, Kareena,”

adds the source.

The people who design Bollywood

When we look at the word ‘designer’ in Bollywood context, our glance is usually fixated upon the people who have made Rani Mukherji’s sari or Kareena Kapoor’s earrings or Saif Ali Khan’s blazer.
Yet as important as costumiers may well be dressing the film itself is a whole different kind of expertise.

Here’s a quick look, then, at some of Bollywood’s most prolific art directors, the people largely responsible for the look and feel of the film.
