Musafir
[Tuesday, November 09, 2004]

AK had had enough of change. From orphanages to juvenile delinquent homes; from odd jobs to petty crimes; from home addresses to jail addresses. He wanted his innocence back. A plot of land in Bangalore; A family; a dog; A new beginning…

One last big con-job, girlfriend in tow, sunset in background, and he would be well on his way. If this was a boilerplate Hindi film. Not. Twenty-four hours later, he’s been betrayed by his girlfriend, hunted by a drug lord, orphaned by the death of his three partners, and sent to Goa to do a drug deal to buy his life back.

As “Musafir” jack-knifes into the hedonism of Goa’s raves, flea markets, hippies and wanderlust, AK pulls off a drug deal with the deadly Israelis, chases a femme fatale with a ubiquitous past, manages to lose the drug lord’s money yet again, is hounded by a corrupt cop with a secret agenda, gets offered the same amount by a perverted husband who wants his wife dead, and is constantly challenged by a Punjabi-stud who can’t keep his girlfriend’s flirtatious innuendos at bay!

Under siege and racing the clock, a deadly battle of wits ensues in a climax filled with spiraling tension and volatile action. “Musafir” essentially moves at two speeds. Fast and faster.

For the first time in India, Director Sanjay Gupta explores the genre of Film Noir in its purest form. In plain English, that means “Musafir” delves into the dark side of human nature. Its protagonist is pushed to the edge of his morality and then some. He meets desperate characters, skinned to the bone by their vulgar wants. No justifications. Only gratification.

The tone of the film is duel edged. At its core, “Musafir” juxtapositions AK’s external spiral down the vortex of crime with the riveting inward journey of his conscience which relentlessly badgers his soul with the question: Sex. Murder. Betrayal. Everything that makes life worth living!

Interesting facts of this film:

Sanjay Dutt and Anil Kapoor on screen together for the first time after being in the industry for 23 yrs.

Sanjay Gupta, Sanjay Dutt and Aditya Panscholi team together after 10 yrs. They came together for AATISH in 1994 which was a success.

Koena Mitra earned her debut in this film. She just had one song in the film, but Sanjay Gupta was so impressed by her work and dedication that he gave her a well-etched role in the film as Anil Kapoor’s love interest.

A promotional music video has been shot for the song TEZ DHAAR that has been sung by Sanjay Dutt. The entire video has been shot inside a limousine with 4 Swedish models. The lyrics of the song are actual lines that Sanjay Dutt speaks in the film.

Distinct looks for all the characters….Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Mahesh Manjerekar, Aditya Panscholi
